Summary on Environmental Impact Assessment
Production of Barytes mineral in India makes our country Number 3 in ranking. The metallurgical and mineral industries constitute the bedrock of industrial development as they provide the basic raw material for most of the industries World production has increased from 6.0- 6.5Mtpa in the early 2000s to 7.7Mt in 2004 and has increased sharply since to an estimated 8.3Mt in 2006. Indias contribution in its production lies at 1.2Mt during 2006. Barytes (or barite) is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate. Its main properties are its high specific gravity (4.5), very low solubility; it is non-toxic, and also chemically and physically un-reactive. More than 80% of the mineral production is from open cast mines and therefore, it becomes necessary to focus on the overburden quantity along with mineral production in order to assess the total amount of annual excavation in Indias mining sector. Barytes ore is the source of primary BaSO4 for the Paints and Chemical Industries. Sri Kanaka Durga Tribal Labour Contract Mutually Aided Cooperative Society proposes to produce Barytes and Dolomite over a land extent of 58.704 Ha. situated in Survey No. 58 of Pocharam village under Garla Mandal in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh. A Mining Plan was prepared and submitted, which was duly approved by The Director of Mines and Geology, Hyderabad under Rule 22 (4) of MCR, 1960 in the applicants name as Mr. Palthya Moni, resident of Ratistambam Bazar, Garla Village, Khammam District, Andhra Pradesh. The mining lease is approved for 58.704 Ha. (145 Ac.) area and this mining lease approval is valid for a period of 20 years.

In order to fulfill the further necessary requirements for obtaining the Environmental Clearance for this mining activity, the proponent has carried required Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA) study in and around the proposed mine lease area. This assessment is performed to identify the likely environmental impacts and based on the findings; an effective environmental management plan will be put in place as per the EIA Notification 2006 general guidelines and the revised Model TORs outlined for Mining projects.

The standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) will be met and adhered to. This study covers an area surrounding the project site with a radial distance of 10 km from the proposed mining lease area. The baseline monitoring was carried out during the Summer Season 09 (period from March to May 09). PROJECT LOCATION: The proposed M/s. Sri Kanaka Durga Tribal Labour Contract Mutually Aided Cooperative Society is situated in Survey No. 58 of Pocharam village under Garla Mandal in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh.

SCOPE OF THE PRESENT STUDY OF REIA : The study area covers an area of 10 km radius around the proposed project site. The study includes detailed characterization of various Environmental components such as Air, Water, noise, Land and Socio-economics with in the study area. Objectivies of study are To assess the existing base line data of Air, Water, Noise, Land and Socioeconomic environment. To evaluate the beneficial and adverse impacts of the proposed activity.

To prepare an Environmental Management plan (EMP) detailing control technologies and measures to be adopted for minimizing the impacts and improving the Environmental Quality.

To predict the incremental levels of pollutants in the study area due to the proposed project. To prepare post project programme for monitoring and regulating Environmental parameters.

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS: Meteorological Studies: Meteorological stations are installed at site to measure the wind speed, wind direction, temperature and humidity. Air Environment: To know the exiting ambient air quality, nine sampling stations with in the study zone are identified and monitored for pollutants like, suspended particulate matter (SPM), RSPM, SO2, NOx and CO. For this sampling calibrated high volume air samplers and respirable dust samplers were used. The Ambient air quality measured at nine sampling stations with in the study zone showed the following maximum and minimum concentrations of the pollutants S. No. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. PARAMETER SPM RSPM SO2 NOx CO MIN (g/m3) 71 24.5 6.8 5.14 0.039 (ppm) MAX (g/m3) 128 45.8 12.15 11.18 0.0498 (ppm)

It may be seen that all the parameters i.e., SPM, RSPM, SO2, NOx and CO are well with in the range of 24 hr average of National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Noise Pollution : The Ambient noise levels monitored with in the study zone show an minimum and maximum values of 52 63.9 dB(A) with Night equivalent values in the range between 39.8 - 45 dB(A). Water Environment: Six numbers of water samples (Ground & surface) were collected in the study zone, i.e., one sample from surface and five samples from bore wells. All these samples are free from colour and pollutants. The test results show that all parameters well with in the permissible limits of drinking water standards. Land Environment: Four soil samples were collected and analysed to know the physical and chemical properties. Land use: In the study zone predominantly two crops are under cultivation i.e. paddy and Sugar cane. The region is predominantly rural and suburban. Total population in this study zone are less than one lack. FLORA & FAUNA: The area is plain and there is no forest around the study area. As the area is agriculture oriented there is no suitable habitat for any wild life. SOCIO ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT: The operation of the proposed project could result in elevation of the economic status of the people surrounding. Proposed project could result in creation of employment which result in improvement of economic status of the people surrounding. The Management of M/s. M/s. Sri Kanaka Durga Tribal Labour Contract Mutually Aided Cooperative Society, has proposed to give preference to local people for recuirtment of personal for project operation. There fore the impact on socio-economic Environment could be beneficial. 4

PROCESS DESCRIPTION: MINING OPERATION The mining will be carried out by manual open cast method with the help of jackhammer drilling and blasting in this area. Based on present demand and the mineral reserves available in the area, it is proposed to rise about 2500 T of Barytes per year on an average from this area. It is expected that the mine will be operated fro 300 days in a year. During this plan period, the Barytes production will be obtained by excavating one bench of 4.0 m height from the surface of the area by advancing the old pit (OP-1) towards south. To obtain the full thickness of the Barytes, the host rock (Cherty Dolomite) has to be removed along with the mineral. The year wise workings are shown on plan and sections of plate 4 and the production particulars are given below: Year 1 Year 2nd Year 3rd Year 4th Year 5th Year

CONCEPTUAL MINING i) Exploration: In this lease period it is proposed to dig two trenches, four trial pits and to drill three DTH holes to know the extent of mineral body i.e., Barytes and Dolomite respectively along with strike & dip directions. ii) Exploration: The mining will be carried out by open cast method in this area with the help of jackhammer drilling and blasting and about 5000 tones of Barytes will be produced per year from this area. The existing pits will be developed along the strike and dip direction of Barytes over an extent of 24000 m 2 in this lease and about 16400 m2 of the pits area will be reclamated at the end of the mining. iii) Waste management: During this lease period, about 10718 m 3 of waste will generate and this waste will be used for reclamation of the pits over an extent of 16400 m2.

iv) v)

Plantation: In this lease period about 7200 m2 (1200 X 6m) buffer zone will be planted around the area. Utilization of the area at the end of mining: At the end of the life of the mine, the Barytes pit will be reclamated and balance pit will be used for rain water harvesting.

OPEN CAST MINING i) Mode of workings: The mining will be operated by manual, open cast method with the help of drilling and blasting. The minerals will be excavated by forming 2.5 m height benches from surface. For drilling purpose two jackhammers and a tractor mount compressor is used. Apart from this no mechanization is required to mine in this area. ii) Layout of mine working: For the first two years, the Barytes production will be obtained by excavating two beches of 2.5 m height from southern face of old pit OP-1 and in balance period the workings will be advanced towards south and towards north in strike directions as shown plate 4. As per Dolomite is concerned, production will be obtained by excavating 1.5 m bench from southern face towards north. PRODUCTION OF BARYTES It is proposed to mine Barytes from first year onwards on south side of pit OP-1 and later these workings will be advanced towards south and north i.e., along the strike direction for first five years production (as per plate-4). Since Barytes is associated with Cherty Dolomite, it is proposed to do mining from both materials together and later the mineral (Barytes) & waste (Cherty Dolomite) will be separated by manual hand picking. During the first year, the Barytes production will be obtained by excavating two bench of 2.0 m each on southern side of lod pit OP-1, over a length of 30 m, to a width of 25m and to a height of 4 m between the RLS of 105-100 and obtained about 5000 tonnes of Barytes and 3000 cu.m of Cherty Dolomite in the first year.

During second year, the two southern side benches of first year wormings will be advanced towards south to a distance of 30 m and to a width of 25 m and obtained about 7000 tonnes of Barytes and 7000 cu.m of Cherty Dolomite (waste). During third year, the two southern side benches of second year workings will be advanced towards south to a distance of 30 m and to a width of 25 m and obtained about 5000 tonnes of Barytes and 7000 cu.m of Cherty Dolomite (waste). Fourth year, towards northern side two benches of 2.0 m will be advanced towards north to a distance of 30 m and to a width of 25 m and obtained about 5000 tonnes of Barytes and 7000 cu.m of Cherty Dolomite (waste). Fifth year, the Barytes production of 7000 tonnes and the Dolomite waste about 7000 cu.m will be obtained by advancing the two southern benches of fourth year towards north to a distance of 30 m and to a width of 25 m as shown in plan -4. PRODUCTION OF DOLOMITE It is proposed to mine Dolomite (Low silica) situated on West side of the area from south towards north from 2nd year onwards with 7000 tonnes annually from the grant of lease. MINE DRAINAGE: 1. Water table: Normally the ground water table is available at a depth of more than 60 m in rainy seasons and 80 m depth in summer from the bore wells that are available in this region from normal ground level. 2. Encounter and discharge of mine water: There is no chance of groundwater likely to be encountered in the mine. But the rainwater will accumulate at pit bottom in rainy seasons and this rain water will be dried up slowly by percolating through the joins of the base rock.

STACKING OF MINERALS REJECTS AND DISPOSAL OF WASTE a) Nature of Top Soil/Waste and Mineral Rejects: The proposed mine workings does not consisting of soil & screen. So there is no separate top soil generation. 7

Dumping site: The overburden/side burden will be stacked adjacent to the working on southern side of the area over a length of 150 m width of 32 m and to height of 6 m, where the dump location is shown in plate -4. b) Configuration & sequence of Build of Dumps: The waste will be stacked adjacent workings temporarily on southern sided of the area and the waste will be used for reclamation of the pit from second five years on words. In this plan period, the dumps will be stabilized by keeping the dump slopes at 450 angle and by constructing retailing wall on dump slopes. The proposed dump location is shown on plat -4.

ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT PLAN

Post Construction Phase Air Pollution Management The proposed mining activity would result in the increase of SPM concentrations due to fugitive dust. Frequent water sprinkling in the vicinity would be undertaken and will be continued as there is possibility for dust generation due to truck mobility. It will be ensured that both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles are properly maintained to comply with exhaust emission requirements. Dust emissions and particulate emissions will be controlled by water spraying through sprinklers at all the sources of dust formation and corresponding mitigative measures are elaborated as follows: Regular water sprinkling at dust emanating sources viz., drilling and transportation through haulage roads, etc will be carried out. Periodic maintenance of transport vehicles and equipment will be carried out to check emission levels. Overloading of trucks will be avoided and carrying the ore/mineral in covered trucks will be taken-up to minimize pollution levels. Greenbelt will be developed that will act as a pollution sink.

WATER POLLUTION MANAGEMENT Generally water environment would have adverse effects due to mine discharges and siltation due to storm water. As this is an open cast mining method it will not generate any wastewater as there is no mineral processing involved. The mining of dolomite and barytes does not involve any treatment or beneficiation by using water, expect chipping and sizing to required size. Therefore, the question of disposal of water will not arise. Moreover, mining activity much above the ground water level doesnt lead to any ground water contamination.

POST PROJECT MONITORING PROGRAMME 9

In order to maintain the environmental quality within the standards, regular monitoring of various environmental components is necessary. The proponent will allocate Rs. 5.0 lakhs annual budget towards environmental protection initiatives. ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING Regular monitoring of various environmental parameters shall be carried out to ascertain the following points, Status of air, noise, water, land pollution within the plant and in its vicinity; Generate data for predictive or corrective purpose in respect of pollution; and To assess and monitor environmental impacts periodically. SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT The management firmly believes in the concept of safety and

environmentally sustainable growth. The authorities and staff are very much concern in Environment issues. The management is going to develop scientifically designed green belt around the premises to mitigate air and noise pollution impacts on the surroundings. The management proposed to monitor ambient air as per APPCB guidelines. All the employees are provided with personal protective equipment such as helmets, hand gloves, safety shoes, goggles and apron as per their place of work. The management will provide safety training to all employees periodically and regularly. CONCLUSION The management of M/s. Sri Kanaka Durga Tribal Labour Contract Mutually Aided Coop Society, is committed to zero emissions by totally eliminating the possible impacts of water and air pollution.
