STUDY GUIDE FOR MIDTERM 2

TOMOKI OHSAWA

Sections 2.2 and 2.3 What is the inverse A1 of an n n matrix A? Know how to calculate the inverse matrix A1 given a square matrix A, i.e., the formula for 2 2 matrices and also how to do this for a general n n case. Know some key properties of inverse matrices (Theorem 6 on p. 105 [p. 121 in the 3rd edition]). Understand the equivalences for square matrices (Theorem 8 on p. 112 [p. 129 in the 3rd edition]).

Section 4.1 Understand the concepts of vector space and subspace. Know how to tell if a given subset H of a vector space V is a subspace or not by checking if the properties of a subspace hold for H ; or writing the subset H as a span of vectors in V (see Theorem 1 on p. 194 [p. 221 in the 3rd edition]).

Section 4.2 Understand what the null space Nul A and column space Col A are. Can you restate some parts of the equivalence theorem for square matrices (Theorem 8 on p. 112 [p. 129 in the 3rd edition]) in terms of Nul A and Col A? Know how to write Nul A explicitly (see Example 3 on p. 200 [p. 228 in the 3rd edition]). Know what a linear transformation between vector spaces is: What kind of properties do they have to satisfy?

Section 4.3 Understand the concept of linear independence/dependence of vectors in a vector space (not necessarily Rn ). Understand the concept of basis for a vector space. Know how to nd a basis for a subspace that is dened as the span of some set of vectors: Which vectors should you eliminate so that the set becomes linearly independent and still spans the subspace? For example: How do you nd bases for Nul A and Col A for a given matrix A?

Section 4.4 What are the coordinates of a vector in a vector space with respect to a given basis? How do you nd the coordinates of a vector in Rn given a non-standard basis for it? How do you nd the coordinates of a vector in a vector space other than Rn such as Pn given a basis for it? The opposite of the above two: How do you write down the components of a vector in Rn or a polynomial in Pn given its coordinates with respect to some basis? Sections 4.5 and 4.6 How do you dene the dimension of a vector space? How do you calculate the dimensions of Nul A and Col A? How do you calculate the dimensions of Pn and its subspaces? What is the rank of a matrix? Understand the Rank Theorem. Sections 5.1 and 5.2 What are eigenvalues and eigenvectors? Know how to calculate an eigenvector corresponding to a given eigenvalue of a matrix. Know how to calculate determinants and their properties (Theorem 3 on p. 275 [p. 313 in the 3rd edition]): There are formulas for 2 2 and 3 3 matrices but in general through row reduction (a bit of Section 3.2). Know how to nd eigenvalues: Characteristic equations, calculations of them using the determinant formulas for 2 2 and 3 3 matrices, and solving them by factoring.
