ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGES

The 5 stages for engineering a system or product

AM Handoussa 3/30/2013

ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE 1: Identify the customer & the problem Identify the customer & the problem Provide solutions for problems Identify the needs for the system (using available technologies) Economic feasibility of fulfilling the customers needs Solve the problem and meet the customers needs Meet the standard codes of professional organizations Meet the government standards Compromise to meet budget constraints

Standard parts are used wherever possible since they are cheaper than custom parts Assembly drawing shows basic proportion of parts and how they fit together, clearances of moving parts, ease of assembly and serviceability Functional considerations come first but manufacturing problems must be kept constantly in mind

ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE 2: Generate concepts Generate possible solutions (Narrow down the provided solutions) Brainstorming sessions to collect ideas o Concepts not suitable as solutions can serve as springpads to generate more ideas Present, share and record ideas by technical sketching including inspirations, breakthroughs that come to light o All notes and sketches must be signed and dated and retained for design documentation and possible patent proof

ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE 4: Models and prototypes Using the CAD model, construct a model scale to study, analyse and refine a design o 3D Virtual prototype o Physical prototype o Intelligent models, feature based modelling o Rapid prototyping Check clearances and mass properties calculated Shade and render if 3D prototype Revise the design through gained information (looping limited by time & expense considerations) Decision for the production model

ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE 3: Compromise solutions After careful consideration of the problems, select various features of the concepts generated in stage 2 Combine the features in one compromise solution Evaluate the best solution in detail o Attempts to simplify the solution so that it performs efficiently, easy to manufacture, repair and even dispose of when lifetime is over Refined design sketches Study of suitable materials Study of motion problems that may be involved o Many of these problems are solved graphically using schematic drawings in which various parts are shown in skeleton form o Basic calculations, such as velocity & acceleration Design layout, accurate CAD and assembly drawing o At this point all parts are designed for strength and function

ENGINEERING DESIGN STAGE 5: Production/Working drawings Detail drawings o Drawings of the individual parts o Show the necessary views, material, dimensions, required tolerances, notes other information required to describe each part sufficiently o Off-the shelf parts are not shown in the detail drawings but are shown in the assembly drawing and listed with specifications in the part lis Assembly drawings o Show how all parts fit together in the complete product Make, check & approve the final set of production/working drawings
