ADDIE model A traditional instructional model that recommends the following steps Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Bit The lowest level of data stored by a computer. Branching A non-linear navigation path that is dependent on the learner's response to questions. Originally widely used for online survey questionnaires and has been incorporated into some eLearning applications. The use of branching in eLearning applications avoids the user being tested on materials that they are already proficient in. Broadband In layperson's terms, high speed transmission of data. Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL)-An initiative guided by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a shared technical framework or computer standard, especially for web based content. Two of the main aims of this process would be interoperability and reusability. Learning content management system (LCMS) A LCMS is a system that is used to create, store, use and reuse eLearning content in the form of learning objects. Although the terms should denote the combination of a learning management system (LMS) and a content management system (CMS), LCMS and LMS are often interchangeable used.

Twitter and E learning-

Suppose youre doing a course on organizational leadership. Inevitably, some learners will have questions of the subject matter expert (SME). You could incorporate a subject matter tweet that lets people ask questions or follow the SME after the course is complete. Consider it a post-course consulting tool. It also humanizes the course and makes it seem more personal, which can contribute to its perceived value. Edmodo Edmodo provides teachers and students a secure place to connect and collaborate, share content and educational applications, and access homework, grades, class discussions and notifications. Edmodos main goal is to help educators harness the power of social media to customize the classroom for each and every learner. Edublog Some bloggers use their blogs as a learning journal or a knowledge log to gather relevant information and ideas, and communicate with other people. Many teachers share materials and ideas to meet the diverse needs of all learners in their classrooms Teachers can often rely on these sources to communicate with one another regarding any issues in education that they may be having, including classroom management techniques and policies. In this way, the blog often acts as a support system for teachers where they can access ideas, tools, and gain support and recognition from other professionals in their field. Weblogs can provide a forum for reading, writing and collaborating Wikispaces Wikispaces introduced wikispaces for classrooms with a new innovative feel. Students and teachers can have discussions, do projcts, e-tests and post relevent news on the present topic on hand. What is e-Learning? It is the use of the internet to facilitate learning together with the use of electronic applications to aid in the process of learning.

e-Learning Terminology Simulation the act of imitating a process or behavior. Instructional System Design (ISD) practice of creating instructional experience which makes the grasping of knowledge easier, more efficient, effective and appealing. Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) set of technical standards for the creation of e-learning software, that tells the programmer how to write code so that it can be integrated with other e-learning software.

Start a Glossary on eLearning terminology Assistive technologies- Assistive technologies in e-learning is a term that covers software, systems, applications and hardware that help people with a given disability interact with a device, for example a computer or mobile device. CMS- A CMS (Content management System) is an application that provides (in theory) a simple interface to allow non-technical specialists to manage content. Accessibility- It means making things easy, clear and simple to use. And at the same time it means making it accessible to people with disabilities. 1. Explain how the following can be used in eLearning: Edmodo, EduBlog, Twitter, Youtube, WikiSpaces Edmodo- Edmodo helps connect all learners with the people and resources needed to reach their full potential EduBlog- This can be used as a private learning log, a public salsa blog, and the discussions of members on a particular module can be included Twitter- (microblogging: twitter) content presentation: social presence, teaching presence, engagement, interaction, micro learning/blogging. Engage students in personally driven professional development, community of practice, affinity groups. Reaching out to and engaging in self-directed passion driven professional development.

Youtube- The ability to quickly create a small learning piece and then distribute it to thousands of people instantaneously its great for quick pieces of instruction.

WikiSpaces- While there are a lot of awesome wiki platforms available out there in the sphere, I like the simplicity of wikispaces. Students seem to be able to pick it up fairly easily, and it has become the foundation to all my classes

eLearning vs Traditional Learning Advantages of eLearning

Learning is self-paced and gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as necessary. Convenient for students to access any time, any place. Learning is also self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools appropriate to their different interests, needs, and skill levels.

Disadvantages of eLearning

Learners need to have access to a computer and the Internet. Learners need to also have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Slow internet connections or older computers may make accessing the course materials difficultthis may cause the learners to get frustrated and give up.

Advantages of traditional Learning

Students are familiar with the surroundings and feel comfortable in it. Students can even get more direct assistance from the teacher. Communication is much easier as students will be speaking in person; therefore there is less chances that one of them will be misunderstood.

Disadvantages of traditional Learning

Shy or marginalized students may not feel like they should speak up or participate in class. The noisy students in the room can be distracting to other students, just as noise in the hallway might detract from the lecture. The cost of travelling for students who live is too high, some students miss their lectures.

Disadvantages of Traditional Learning

Traditional learning expects students to learn skills at the same rate. Social Problems are condensed into a small space.

------Janolia Naicker E-Learning: Advantages

It reduces travel time and travel costs for students Students can study anywhere they have access to a computer and Internet connection Students can work at their own pace Tutoring can be done at anytime and from anywhere. Online materials can be updated, and learners are able to see the changes at once. eLearning can accommodate different learning styles and facilitate learning through a variety of activities

Disadvantages<strong

Students must have access to a computer and the internet. Students and lecturers hardly meet, this can lead to students feeling isolated Its easy for miscommunications to occur when communication is not done face to face In the case of internet not working, students and lecturers can not communicate or do work. Learners with sow study habits may fall behind Hands-on or work is difficult to simulate in a virtual classroom.

Traditional learning Advantages

Can clarify text material.

Complements certain individual learning preferences. Some students depend upon the structure provided by highly teacher-centered methods. Facilitates large-class communication.

<strong Disadvantages

Places students in a passive rather than an active role, which hinders learning. Encourages one-way communication; therefore, the lecturer must make a conscious effort to become aware of student problems and student understanding of content without verbal feedback. Requires a considerable amount of unguided student time outside of the classroom to enable understanding and long-term retention of content. Requires the instructor to have or to learn effective writing and speaking skills.

<strong

Advantages of e-learning Flexibility to join discussions, esp for the shy students

Disadvantages of e-learning 1. Without the routine structures of a traditional class, students may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines 2. Students may feel isolated from the instructor and classmates 3.Slow Internet connections may make accessing course materials frustrating

Advantages of Traditional learning 1. Provides learners with a fixed schedule 2. Teacher can easily track students progress

Disadvantage of Traditional learning 1. Students may be shy to seek clarity on issues they dont understand fully 2.Teacher dictates learning structure which might be highly unsuitable to other students

1.What is elearning? E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere by use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT). e-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts. The origins of term elearning can be traced back to the 1980s, since then the term as took a broader definition due to the rapidly advancing technology

Glossary Active learning -Active learning is about a person being active rather than passive as they learn. Edmodo Edmodo enables a class to create a unique, private learning space online as an extension of the physical classroom. Students can access Edmodo from any computer at home or at school (e.g. in the library or on classroom computers). Edmodo can also be accessed via an internet-capable mobile phone using the phones web browser or the downloadable Edmodo phone application. As Edmodo is a private, teacher-controlled learning space, all communication and student interaction is closely monitored by the teacher. Edublog An edublog is a blog created for educational purposes. Edublogs archive and support student and teacher learning by facilitating reflection, questioning by self and others, collaboration and by providing contexts for engaging in higher-order thinking. Edublogs proliferated when blogging architecture became more simplified and teachers perceived the instructional potential of blogs as an online resource.

Twitter Twitter allows the student and instructor to follow the influencers and use hash tags to communicate making learning easier, more fun and more appealing to young and tech-savvy learners.

Create An Informative List of Resources -Before you begin, create a list of things you want to provide as information to your learners. Create Learning Hashtag - a #hash tag with the help of which learners will be able to feedback and communicate on your materials. Create Learning Topics - Create topics, making use of the hashtags. Create Learning Lists - which basically is a curated group of Twitter users. Learn How To Search - has a powerful and accurate search engine that will help you get the information you need most. Follow The Influencers - Get in touch and follow interesting people from your field of study.

Youtube Youtube being the dominant video sharing site, it as the potential to help any student and educators in countless ways, for e.g. class projects that involve presentations or directions on how to do something could be enhanced with video uploading, homework lessons and projects that are teacher-endorsed 'clips', available online, could further help students stay in touch and stay attuned to progress in a class, video sharing with amongst classmates and educators helps on the social front is easy, fun and increases participations and the list goes on and on. WikiSpaces Are spaces for your students to work in that you can share with only those people you want to be involved, uses include:

Build a wiki detailing interpersonal communication on the internet Use the wiki as a place for students to build an assignment Have the wiki sever as a reflection tool Bring several students together to collaborate on a project

2. E-learning vs Traditional Learning When comparing learning an idential course in a traditional to a computer mediated learning framework, students have expressed higher satisfaction from the computer mediated learning. ELearning includes components that are common in traditional learning for e.g. presentation of ideas by students, group discussions, information and accumlating knowledge etc. E-learning offers great promise for enhancing the quality of education beside traditional classroom. However, not only separate learning but also face to face learning has advantages as well as downsides.

Advantages of E-learning :

Time for digesting the information and responding, enhanced communication among the learners Learning is self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools appropriate to their different interests, needs, and skill levels Access to information and to discussion ability A higher motivation and involvement in the process on the part of the learners.

Disadvantages of E-Learning:

Students require access to a computer and the internet. Learning online requires from students and teachers to be familiar with the communication technology which they use if they want to make progress and achieve their aims. Student may feel isolated from instructor.

Advantages of Traditional learning :

Most students consider the traditional classroom environment beneficial for learning because they can interact with the teacher and their classmates The learning atmosphere of the traditional classroom helps them to stay focused and keeps them motivated. In a traditional classroom environment, learning begins with the teacher sharing his knowledge with students, proceeds with discussions between the teacher and the students and ends with the new information written in notebooks. traditional classroom learning is that it provides students with a fixed schedule and specific periods dedicated exclusively to learning.

Disadvantages of Traditional learning:

Students' focus is set in the wrong direction. It is simply impossible for one person to give each student the one-on-one attention or instruction that may be required. A teacher's lecture is generally one-size-fit-all. In a traditional classroom environment, it's not uncommon for children to become bored or frustrated.

3.The virtual classroom Synchronous communication : Data transfer method in which sent (upstream) and received (downstream) data flows at the same speed, and is spaced by timing signals. In any data transmission, the sender and reciever must have a was to extract individual characters. So in-terms of synchronous communications and lets imagine you are standing at the end of a data pipe, the

characters arrive in continuous stream of bits, so you need a way to seprate one block of bits from another. <="" span="" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-weight: inherit; fontstyle: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 13px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> Advantages -> Lower overhead and thus, greater throughput and therefore you can send and receive information right away. This more closely resembles a face-to-face or telephone conversation between two or more people, so can present a more natural way of communicating. Asynchronous communication : so activities take place outside of real time. For example, a learner sends you an e-mail message. You later read and respond to the message. There is a time lag between the time the learner sent the message and you replied, even if the lag time is short. So interms of the asychronous communication and imagine you still standing at the same pipeline each character is separated by the equivalent of a flag so you know exactly where characters are located. Advantages -> Set-up is faster than other transmissions, so well suited for applications where messages are generated at irregular intervals, for example data entry from the keyboard and the speed depends on different applications. Which of these teaching strategies would be a better e-learning tool and why? I would prefer Asynchronous communication, it allows such as email and document sharing, can certainly be used for day-to-day communications when an urgent response isn't needed and it is far cheaper. Alternative - Combining asynchronous individual assignments with minimally structured, synchronous, collaborative assignments will increase the level of learning achieved by students.

Janolia Naicker Synchronous Communication Real-time communication in which all parties involved must all participate at the same time. Advantage of Synchronous Communication

It overcomes the two main deficiencies of the asynchronous method, that of inefficiency and lack of error detection

Asynchronous Communication

Communication that is self-paced, meaning that the parties do not have to all participate at the same time. Advantage of Asynchronous Communication

Transmitting and receiving clocks are independent of each other.

----Janolia Naicker <b Synchronous Communication: Synchronous communication is any type of communication in which the parties communicating are "live" or present in the same space and time. A chat room where both parties must be at their computer, connected to the Internet, and using software to communicate in the chat room protocols is a synchronous method of communication Advantage: It overcomes the two main deficiencies of the asynchronous method, that of inefficiency and lack of error detection. Asynchronous Communication: Asynchronous communication denotes processes that progress independently of each other unless one process needs to intersect the other process with a request. This form of communication uses the client-server model and the server handles the numerous requests from its clients. E-mail is an example of an asynchronous mode of communication where one party can send a note to another person and the recipient need not be online to receive the e-mail. Advantage: Transmitting and receiving clocks are independent of each other

Ashara Hanuman Synchronous communication Synchronous communication is direct communication where the communicators are time synchronized. This means that all parties involved in the communication are present at the same time. This includes, but is not limited to, a telephone conversation (not texting), a company board meeting, a chat room event and instant messaging. Advantage You can send and receive information right away. This more closely resembles a face-to-face or telephone conversation between two or more people, presenting a more natural way of communicating. Asynchronous communication Asynchronous communication does not require that all parties involved in the communication to be present at the same time. Some examples are e-mail messages, discussion boards, blogging, and text messaging over cell phones.

Advantage Asynchronous communication enables flexibility. Participants can receive the information when it's most convenient for them. There's less pressure to act on the information or immediately respond in some way. People have time to digest the information and put it in the proper context and perspective. ----Synchronous communication enables real-time communication and collaboration in a "same timedifferent place" mode. These tools allow people to connect at a single point in time, at the same time. Synchronous communication possess the advantage of being able to engage people instantly and at the same point in time. It is more usefull if there is a need for fast response. Asynchronous communication enables collaboration over a period of time through a "different time-different place" mode. These tools allow people to connect together at each person's own convenience and own schedule. Asynchronous tools possess the advantage of being able to involve people from multiple time zones. Asynchronous communication is good for learning because the students do the work on their flexible time. Synchronous communication Real time communication in which individuals involved are to participate at the same time. Advantage It is quick and responsive.

Asynchronous communication Self paced communication in which parties involved dont have to all participate at the same time. Advantage Allows for repetitive use of the communicated message.
