BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION


May 17, 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all laws establishing segregated schools to be unconstitutional Called for desegregation of all schools throughout the nation

LITTLE ROCK BOARD


Little Rock board submitted a plan to gradually integrate students into Little Rock Central High Plan would be implemented Fall of 1957 NAACP registered the nine students known as the little rock nine to be the first students integrated

Was school superintendent Called for one high school to integrate then it would open up to junior schools and three years later it would open up for grade schools Other plans were also made but were seen as
vague, indefinite, slowmoving and indicative of an intent to stall further on public integration -NAACP

SEPTEMBER 4, 1957
Students first attempt to enter school Orval Faubas deployed Arkansas National Guard to stop them and support segregationists
One of the students commented on this saying They moved closer and c l o s e r. . . S o m e b o d y s t a r t e d y e l l i n g . . . I t r i e d to see a friendly face somewhere in the crowdsomeone who maybe could help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me.

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION
September 9
Little Rock District issued a statement condemning the governors deployment of soldiers to the school and called a city wide prayer service

September 12
Dwight Eisenhower summoned the governor Faubas and told him not to defy him

SEPTEMBER 24, 1957


Mayor of Little Rock called the upon the president to use federal troops to force integration of school Sep, 24 Federal troops arrive to help students get into the school

ABUSE
During the school year all of the little rock 9 were verbally and physically abused Melba Patillo had acid thrown in her eyes and was almost burned alive in the womens bathroom

FAUBUS CONT.
Faubus the governor of Arkansas pleaded to the community to pass a referendum that would close all public school down in Little Rock This would enable him to reopen the schools as private schools so that no the black and white students could get educated differently
