BTEC National Diploma in Vehicle Technology ( Year-1 ) Unit 5: Applications of Vehicle Science and Mathematics.
Task 1
A.
(Pass P6)
Ri = 9in.
Engagement Force = N = 120.lb (Normal Force) It turns at n = 2000 rpm Friction disc has a coefficient of friction of 0.3 Determine torque and power that can be transmitted by this system.
B. A steel tie rod in a large vehicle is subjected to a load of 100kN. Find the minimum diameter of the tie rod if the allowable tensile stress (e ) is 75 MPa. Also, determine Youngs modulus of elasticity if the corresponding strain at the above mentioned allowable tensile stress is 3 75 10 4 .
Task 2
(Pass P7)
A cylinder is closed by a sliding piston which exerts a constant pressure on the gas in the cylinder. If the volume of the gas contained at 30 o C is 0 05m 3 determine (a) the volume at a temperature of 67 o C and (b)the temperature required to cause the volume to become 0 06m 3 .
Task 3
(Pass P8)
The vehicle braking system in figure (2) may be split into two parts - input and output the brake pedal and the brake calliper piston. We apply(270N) of input force to the brake pedal. This is attached to a master piston which (for example) is 1.25cm across (diameter size) - . At the other end of the system is the calliper or wheel piston, which for example is 2 cm across:
2. Calculate the output force at the calliper piston and, hence, by comparing it to the input force describe how mechanical ratios help a given vehicle mechanism function easily and properly.
