Dear Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday walking to the library was a lot of fun for students. Students really
enjoyed having their own library card and learning where books are in the library.
Students were very surprised to learn that the library has over 80,000 texts!
Unfortunately, my camera batteries died on the way there, so I don't have any
pictures. :(

In other news, every Friday students have been buddy reading with a first grade
student in Miss Savelle's class. This is an opportunity for students to be the
expert readers. They get to choose a few books that they can read to their first
grader. They are working on how to read and still let the first grader see the
pages at the same time. The first grader needs to follow along because it is their
job to turn the pages. This activity is helping the second graders with fluency
(reading sounding like talking), expression, and about working together.

Students have been working really hard in reading groups. Right now I am in the
process of giving reading tests to find out exactly what level each student is. As
soon as I finish, I will let you know where your child stands. Along with reading
groups, students have been working at workstations. They complete pocket
chart, poetry, writing, buddy reading, projector, computer, spelling, and other
activities. I am sure you have seen some of the papers come home! Students
have been working well with their partners and are learning to problem solve
independently!

Handwriting is something that we are working on. We do have handwriting

books, but I need your support at home as well. If you notice your child's writing
is not formed correctly on the lined papers sent home (from writing workstation),
please work with them at home on how the letters should look on the line. A lot
of students are still making their lower case "s" look like a capital "S" because it is
hard for them to get used to the smaller lines this year. I do work with them in
school, but your follow through at home will make it a much easier process for
them! Also, please be sure their homework is in their best handwriting. The
more we stress handwriting now, the better a habit we will be forming for
students and it should not be a concern by the end of the year. Remember, next
year they learn cursive so we want their regular handwriting perfect before then!

Lastly, I saw that some of you noticed the day of the week for the Halloween
party was incorrect. The party is FRIDAY the 31st, not Wednesday. Please
return those orange forms ASAP so I can give them to Mrs. Hickey and Mrs.
Belzak to finish planning the party. Thank you!

As always, feel free to email any questions or concerns.
