Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,515,400 in April 2013, up 119,100 jobs compared to a year ago. April 2013 was
rd
the 33 consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years. The industry
gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+40,500 jobs, +2.6 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included leisure and hospitality (+34,400 jobs, +3.5 percent); private education and
health services (+19,700 jobs, +1.8 percent); construction (+15,500 jobs, +4.6 percent); professional and business
services (+14,300 jobs, +1.3 percent); financial activities (+3,800 jobs, +0.8 percent); other services (+2,900 jobs,
+0.9 percent); and information (+600 jobs, +0.4 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in motor vehicle and parts dealers; food services and drinking
places; ambulatory health care services; specialty trade contractors; employment services; real estate; and
membership associations and organizations.

Total government (-8,700 jobs, -0.8 percent) and manufacturing (-4,000 jobs, -1.3 percent) lost jobs over the year.

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in federal government and computer and electronic parts
manufacturing.

Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In April 2013, Monroe County (3.7 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by Walton County
(4.1 percent), Okaloosa County (4.6 percent), Alachua County (4.8 percent), and Franklin County (5.0 percent). Many
of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment. Strong population growth was also a contributing factor.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (9.9 percent) in Florida in April 2013, followed by Flagler County
(9.3 percent), Putnam County (9.0 percent), St. Lucie County (8.9 percent), and Miami-Dade County (8.8 percent).
Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate in the state mainly due to long-term losses in state government
jobs. April 2013 was the first month since May 2008 that all Florida counties had jobless rates below 10.0 percent. In
March, only Hendry County had a double-digit unemployment rate.

Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Eighteen of the 22 metro areas in the state had over-the-year job gains in April 2013. The areas with the largest gains
were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+35,400 jobs, +3.1 percent), Jacksonville (+16,500 jobs, +2.8 percent), and
Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+15,500, +1.5 percent).

Of the four metro areas experiencing over-the-year job declines, Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach
(-800 jobs, -1.1 percent) experienced the greatest decline followed by Lakeland-Winter Haven (-400 jobs,
-0.2 percent) and Sebastian-Vero Beach (-300 jobs, -0.6 percent).
Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's
Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.
Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to:
http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm

The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and businesses
through successful workforce, community, and economic development strategies. Please visit www.floridajobs.org for more
information.
The next Florida Employment and Unemployment release will be June 21, 2013, at 10:00 A.M.
