2 ! ABORTION POLITICS: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

The Politics of Abortion: An Annotated Bibliography The five following sources provide an overview of the politics of abortion, and how some politicians choose what will give them more votes versus doing what is right, and how some choose the opposite. One of the below sources provides a brief history of the abortion debate, and another shows how politicians are, at their roots, always political, for better or for worse. All of the articles show that no matter which stance is taken on the abortion debate, there will be opposition, and that the only way to stop that is to take a stance that is beneficial to all women. Bachiochi, E. (2009). Palin, abortion, and the feminists. Human Life Review, pp. 95-100. Retrieved March 4, 2013. This article describes the juxtaposition of Sarah Palin's pro-life feminism, and the hate she got because of it. It acclaims Palin's strength of character as she holds onto her beliefs, and shows how a woman can be against abortion yet for women. Erika Bachiochi, the author of this article, has written many pieces against abortion, and so has the necessary background to write about the subject. For me, this piece showed a wider importance of the abortion/pro-life debate--both sides can be feminists who just have different opinions. Begala, P. (2012, July 2). Politicians acting politically? Newsweek, 160(1/2), 18. Retrieved March 4, 2013.

3 ! ABORTION POLITICS: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

This article is unusual in that it doesn't truly focus on the abortion debate, but more the motives behind it. Begala explains how politician's motives will always be partially political, regardless of what they believe. He stresses that the end result is all that matters, and if it is a positive one, it's only a good thing. This source is not extremely credible, as even though it was in a respectable news magazine, it was an extremely opinion-based and more informal piece, however, it still shows basic facts of politics. For me, this article is necessary to understanding the abortion debate, because it explains how people can seem to have the same ideologies and still have opposing viewpoints. Conniff, R. (2012). The GOP war on women. Progressive, 76(5), 8-10. Retrieved March 4, 2013. Conniff explains how many Republicans, in particular, are trying to restrict the rights of women, especially when it comes to birth control and access to abortions. He explains how the politicians are out of touch with what the people believe, and they're alienating many voters, especially the people that they're removing the rights of. Conniff is a reputable source, if a slightly biased one, as he calls on many past quotes and events to prove his point. This piece is personally very useful, as it highlights the main issues of the birth control debate.

House, B., & Koszczuk, J. (2012). Remote control. National Journal, 16. Retrieved March 4, 2013. This piece provides a more political background of the battleground of abortion. It explains how the politicians have to side with the general public in order to stay in office, so the government will have a hard time crimaljzing abortions if the public believes that are a right. As this article was published in the National Journal, it is credible, and pulls from many debates to explain the history of the politics of abortions. It's useful as a source only to gain some background knowledge--it doesn't really have a position on the topic of abortion. Protect women's health [Editorial]. (2012, June). Scientific America, p. 12. Retrieved February 28, 2013, from http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/ The authors, editors of Scientific America, defend against the current public opinion of Planned Parenthood. They prove the usefulness of the organization, and the public service it is doing, providing safe abortions and many other health programs. The editors are well informed about this issue, being editors in a scientific journal, as well as clearly researching Planned Parenthood. Also, this article is useful to me, as it clearly states the importance of these services, and the way that the way politicians disagree for unfounded reasons.
