Arcosolv TPNB Solvent

Low Odor Coalescent for Architectural Paints and Industrial Latexes

Description

Arcosolv TPNB is a non-HAP coalescent for architectural paints and industrial latexes. Its low odor makes it an attractive alternative to ester-alcohol coalescents for interior applications. Because it evaporates faster than ester-alcohols or phthalate plasticizers, paints formulated with TPNB show excellent hardness development, resistance to dirt pickup, and block resistance. Its low water solubility also helps improve early water resistance. In Europe, it is VOC-exempt since its boiling point exceeds 250C. Arcosolv TPNB is currently available only in Europe and Asia. Low Odor: Unlike conventional coalescents, TPNB exhibits remarkably low odor making it ideally suited for indoor applications. Outstanding Efficiency: TPNB reduces the minimum film forming temperature of hard styrene-acrylic resins much better than ester-alcohol coalescents. It is effective at low levels, which reduces formulation costs. Improved Coating Performance: Unlike phthalates and other permanent plasticizers, TPNB evaporates from the film in a matter of weeks. This helps prevent dirt pickup due to migration of the plasticizer to the paint surface. This also speeds up hardness development, which is essential for block and scrub resistance. TPNB is also less water-soluble than most glycol ether coalescents, which helps improve early water resistance. VOC-Exempt in Europe: According to European Council directive proposal 97/C99/02, from March 1997, TPNB is classified as a non-VOC because its vapor pressure is below the 0.01 kPa limit. TPNB also meets the non-VOC requirements of the EU Eco-label scheme because its boiling point exceeds 250C.

Coalescence Efficiency

Arcosolv TPNB reduces the minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) of hard styrene-acrylic resins better than Texanol Ester Alcohol. Rhodopas DS 910 and Mowilith DM 611 both have MFFTs of 17C without coalescent. A coalescent level of at least 3% is recommended to obtain satisfactory results. More is required for harder resins. Overall, the coalescing efficiency of TPNB for styrene-acrylic resins is similar to dibutyl phthalate.

Hardness

Once the paint has coalesced and formed a smooth film, it is important that the coalescent Development evaporate in a reasonable amount of time to improve film properties. Phthalate plasticizers do not evaporate but tend to slowly migrate to the surface of the paint. This can cause early problems with block and scrub resistance and dirt pickup later on. Ester alcohol coalescents also tend to stay behind longer than glycol ethers, as indicated by slower film hardness development:
