HOW CAN WOMEN BENEFIT FROM AN MBA?

Dear

We recently spoke with Ms Anuradha Mehta, President Taxila Business School, who offered some key advice to women interested in an MBA/PGDM.
What are some of the challenges facing women in the business world?

Research has shown there are three key differences

between women and men that contribute to gender inequity in business: salary, confidence on the job and mentors in the business world. The MBA/PGDM helps to address all three of these issues by providing women with the skill set, confidence, and credentials to be successful, as well as key insights on salary negotiation, and a strong network to build mentor and sponsor relationships.

What are some of the reasons that the percentage of women is lower than men in MBA/PGDM programmes?

There are a number of factors that contribute to the lower percentage of women versus men

enrolled in MBA/PGDM programmes. Some women undergraduates dont think of pursuing business as a potential career path as so many come from liberal arts backgrounds. In addition, there can be a lack of advisors on college campuses directing women graduates towards business; access to successful female role models can also be a limitation as well as a lack of career planning during undergraduate years. Once women graduate from college, they face several key decision points around starting a family, moving to another part of the country or the world to pursue further studies, and an added challenge of potentially sacrificing their career prospects for their significant others' career or study

plans. All of these issues can impact whether or not a woman pursues the MBA/PGDM.

Why is increasing the numbers of women in business and MBA/PGDM programmes so important?

We need to raise awareness of the impact women can make on society, culture, the environment

and the economy through their business careers, and emphasize all the research that demonstrates companies with more women in senior leadership have better bottom line performance, corporate governance and risk management.

Why is an MBA/PGDM important for women hoping to move into senior management?

Whats especially interesting and a true representation of why an MBA/PGDM is so valuable

for women is a comparison of salary, career advancement and career satisfaction for women with undergraduate college degrees vs. an MBA/PGDM. Figures from research shows that women significantly benefit from an MBA/PGDM across the board, regardless of industry, experience, geography, or any other variable. They indicate that among those who had accepted or received a job offer at graduation, women reported, on average, a 51% increase in salary over their pre-degree salary and nearly half of all women alumni from the graduating classes of 2000 to 2010 (49%) had received a promotion with their current employer.

Also, an MBA/PGDM is a stepping stone to senior leadership for women. If we want more women CEOs, we need to have more women enrolled in MBA/PGDM programmes and more women faculty at business schools. We cant expect to have gender equity in business if women and men dont attend business school in equal numbers. While it is not necessary to have an MBA/PGDM to become CEO, it does improve your odds. Based on our research, half of the 16 women CEOs of the Fortune 500 have an MBA/PGDM. Also, over 40 percent of all Fortune 500 CEOs have an MBA/PGDM or a masters in finance or economics.
What tips do you have for women applying to business school?

First, have a clear understanding of why you want an MBA/PGDM or what the value of an

MBA/PGDM will mean to your career path. Its not for everyone, so be sure its the right path for you. The school admissions teams will want to hear your thoughts on this. Research schools and pick the one that offers you the best opportunities for networking, club involvement, and career choices. Each school has their strengths, so make sure that the schools strengths align with your objectives. Study for the CMAT/CATdont take it cold. Prepare, practice, and build your confidence with the test before sitting for it.
