PHILOSOPHY AS AN OPTIONAL SUBJECT

Ever since the beginning of the IAS examination PHILOSOPHY has been one of the most rewarding subject in IAS (main) examination. It has given many spectacular, wonderful & surprising result. Among the humanities subjects it has the potentiality of giving maximum marks. Though this subject is already established especially in Hindi medium, but in recent years it is fast emerging in English medium also. It is substantiated by many results in last few years. There are many aspirants who cracked IAS in their very first attempt & many others in their last attempt (in their last attempt they changed optional & took PHILOSOPHY as one of the subject). What is more significant is that most of these did not have any background in PHILOSOPHY !!!!!!!!!!

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE SUBJECT

Generally many misconceptions & myths are attatched to PHILOSOPHY among aspirants e.g. Academic background in PHILOSOPHY is required.

However,on the contrary results have shown that almost all successful aspirants with Philosophy do not have any academic background in it. It is not scoring in Eng. medium. If it is the issue then we are raising doubts against the neutrality & unbiasedness of UPSC.

STATUS AFTER CSAT

Philosophys strategic importance has been further enhanced with the introduction of CSAT mainly because of its short syllabus nature.

PHILOSOPHY VIS--VIS OTHER OPTIONALS

1) It has the shortest syllabus. It requires only 75 days to complete entire syllabus. 2) With the fast changing trend of exam where command over the entire subject is required, Philosophy stands perfect. 3) Its IInd paper is all about essay. Topics like democracy, secularism, humanism, women empowerment, multiculturalism, corruption, justice ,religion and morality, etc. are the relevant topics for the essay.
