PizzaSwitch

Delivering Enterprise Switching in a Mid-range Switch

Introduction
PizzaSwitch is Xylans powerful, low-cost family of mid-range switches that organizations can distribute at the edge of their networks for switched desktop connectivity or at the core of a mid-sized network to form a high-speed backbone. Unlike most mid-range switches, the PizzaSwitch offers the performance and software capabilities of a high-end switch, but the price and port density of a midrange switch. Some of the standard features the PizzaSwitch offers include: policy based virtual LANs, internal routing, ATM LAN Emulation, RMON, trunking services, port mirroring, and any-to-any switching. Network managers have several major issues to consider when selecting the right switch for their organization: the number of ports required, price per port, performance, and feature set. Traditionally, the benefit of a lower price per port comes with the penalty of a reduced feature set. Xylan believes features should not be compromised when selecting a mid-range switch, and all network users should benefit from these features regardless of their organizations size. PizzaSwitch extends Xylans family of high performance switches, enabling customers to distribute powerful, yet affordable, workgroup switches where they are needed.

The PizzaSwitch offers the performance and software capabilities of a high-end switch, but the price and port density of a mid-range switch.

PizzaSwitch Features
Powerful VLANs: All PizzaSwitches support Xylans next-generation VLANs, which can be based on physical port, MAC address, layer-three address, protocol type, multicast address, custom bit mask or a combination of these VLAN types. These powerful VLANs reduce the administrative costs associated with network moves, adds, and changes. Users are placed into VLANs based on the policies defined by an administrator, and they can retain their VLAN memberships (up to 32) regardless of their physical location.

Integrated Routing: The standard PizzaSwitch software includes IP and IPX routing, with optional advanced routing (OSPF, IP Multicast, and RIP II) software. The PizzaSwitch performs the routing function reducing the need for costly additional routers. Variety of Backbone and Server Uplinks: A wide variety of sub-module uplinks are offered in the PizzaSwitch, including support for ATM (155 Mbps and DS3), Fast Ethernet, FDDI/CDDI, and frame relay. This flexibility allows the PizzaSwitch to connect almost any high-speed backbone or server device and even connect remote workgroups through frame relay. Any-to-Any Switching: Any Ethernet or uplink port can be switched within hardware to any other port on the PizzaSwitch. This provides the power and flexibility of routing, but at the speed and cost of switching. Network administrators can install the best LAN or backbone technology for each specific application and still have complete connectivity throughout the network.. RMON: RMON Ethernet statistics and history are collected for all Ethernet segments within the PizzaSwitch. Network administrators can use this valuable information to ensure optimal performance and stability for the entire network.

PizzaSwitch Hardware
The PizzaSwitch family uses an advanced hardware architecture with three RISC processors and five ASICs that support powerful, transparent switching at wire speed.

Ethernet Connectivity
The Pizza10 and Pizza10E are optimal solutions for switched 10BaseT applications. They are both equipped with twelve switched Ethernet ports that provide dedicated bandwidth to segments and/or directly attached stations. Additionally, each unit is equipped with two uplink slots that can support a variety of sub-modules for backbone and server connections. The Pizza10 and Pizza10E differ only in the amount of on-board DRAM and flash memory. The Pizza10 supports all applications running software prior to release 3.0. The Pizza10Es extra memory is required for 3.0 software or later, which includes WAN and advanced routing capabilities.

Universal LAN Connectivity Pizza10U and Pizza10UE

The Pizza10U and Pizza10UE offer media flexibility on a port-by-port basis. Each unit has eight Ethernet adapter board slots that can be custom equipped with any mix of Ethernet. The ports can be 10BaseFL (single mode or multimode fiber), 10Base2, 10Base5 and 10BaseT ports. The Pizza10U and Pizza10UE also are equipped with two uplink slots to support a variety of submodules for backbone and server connections. As with the Pizza10 and Pizza10E, the Pizza10U and Pizza10UE differ only in the amount of on-board DRAM and flash memory. The Pizza10U supports all applications running software prior to release 3.0. The Pizza10UEs extra memory is required for any applications running software release 3.0 software, which includes WAN and advanced routing applications.

PizzaSwitch Physical and Virtual ConnectionsThe s flexibility PizzaSwitch provides support for any enterprise LAN connection. Organizati a specific backbone technology to fit the PizzaSwitch; instead they choose the technology, a their precise needs.

Any PizzaSwitch Ethernet port can connect directly to a workstation or an Ethernet switchin PizzaPort. Each Ethernet port provides 135Mbps of dedicated bandwidth to connected devi connect as many as eight Ethernet segments together with a single Pizza10U or Pizza10UE a segments with a Pizza10 or Pizza10E.

The most economical and effective way to improve the performance of an Ethernet network Ethernet. Existing cabling infrastructure can be left intact while shared hubs are replaced w ports to provide direct switched desktop connections. This can be done gradually, by puttin central location and redistributing the shared hubs off the PizzaSwitch. As users demand m shared Ethernet hubs ports can replaced with dedicated PizzaSwitch Ethernet ports.

The PizzaSwitch also supports port-level redundancy. Two ports from a single hub can be c the PizzaSwitch. Using spanning tree, the switch automatically keeps one connection as an wiring failure or port failure on the primary connection, the backup port automatically ass connection and keeps the network available to users.

Routing Access and IP FireWalls

Even with powerful switch solutions, the routing function plays an important role. Routing is required for connectivity between multiple IP or IPX subnets, inter-VLAN communication, and network security. Most switches are independent on a separate router device. However, the PizzaSwitch supports routing within a single unit. By offering the routing function internally, the PizzaSwitch eliminates the cost of purchasing and managing a separate piece of routing hardware along with the switching hardware. Along with routing, Xylan has integrated firewall capabilities into the PizzaSwitch. Through its firewall services, Xylan enforces an organization's security policies by regulating access to the network and its attached resources, considering security in forwarding and VLAN decisions, and protecting access to the network infrastructure itself.

OmniVision Network Management Suite

The PizzaSwitch is managed through Xylans comprehensive standards-based network management application, OmniVision. OmniVision is an entire set of network management tools allowing managers to easily configure, monitor, and diagnose their PizzaSwitch networks using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). OmniVision includes Xylans next-generation network management applications, including SWITCHmanager, AutoTracker and NETWORKmonitor. In addition, the PizzaSwitch supports ASCII console management, software and configuration downloads via the network, a powerful protocol tool kit (FTP, SLIP, TELNET, Zmodem), port mirroring, and RMON.
