Industrial robots in the automotive industry

Youve certainly often seen robots at work. Theyre constantly in motion. They pull and they turn and they accept it all without complaining when theyre installed in heat or cold, in water or chemicals. A robot like this has to withstand a lot. And so do its cables. Especially in the automotive industry, the robots of today have a permanent place in production lines. Robot cables are used in over 60 percent of all cases in the automotive industry. Its a very sensitive area, as a productionline standstill costs a fortune. Robots just arent allowed to break down.

Tested quality

Ultramodern laboratories and test facilities are available to the research and development team at Lapp for this purpose. In addition, they have also collected an immense know-how in this field over the last 25 years. All robot cables are always developed in close cooperation with the customer, and all requirements such as cross sections, movements and the surrounding environment are included in the development process.

Application example stud welder

As an international automotive supplier, the company Nelson Bolzenschweitechnik GmbH in Gevelsberg, Germany, contributes to designing fastenings and processes more economically and to optimizing production processes with special studs and complete welding systems. The stud welding devices are gene-

rally mounted on robots. The studs are welded by the robot onto the body and therefore provide, for example, for the fastening of instrument panels and door trim panels. Here you see the special cable developed by Lapp for this application.

Robot Multibus cable

Due to the dynamic challenges to the transfer media - from bending in ground cables to combined torsion in robot joints - optimized materials and connection solutions are essential. At the same time, the limited space available at the robot makes it necessary to realise data and energy transmission together in just one cable and in one connector.

Just one bus line

In the past the cable routing on the robot was such that the respective field bus line was mounted in the robot depending on the customer or the order. In the process, the choice of the suitable cable was dependent on the respective field bus present in or intended for a system. In contrast, a simpler and less expensive option for robot wiring results by using a Multibus

cable with the matching connector. With one cable for the most common field buses, the robot manufacturer can design the electromechanical components in the robot in a universal and standardised manner. This enables robot manufacturers to reduce their range of variants. In addition, the simpler handling in assembly and the reduced stocking required help cut costs.

Connection with M23

However, not only the cable quality is decisive for smooth operation, but also the connector design. The current state of technology in industrial applications is the M23 connector. The cable clamping is realized with a screw fitting that clamps the cable sheath, but neverthe-

less permits a movement of the individual cores within the cable. Here the use of an extruded design with which the connector and cable can be interconnected with a polyurethane is advantageous. In this case cable clamping is realised via a defined pressing of the metal bushing onto the cable,

which is then extrusion-coated with polyurethane following preassembly. The metal housing provides for the vibration resistance for the contact system and for increased corrosion and EMC protection.

Inspection and Sewerage Reconditioning Robots

Water- the basis for all life
Ground water is the most important drinking water resource. To protect this important commodity, there are cameras that can locate damage in our sewage lines. This is intended to protect the environment by preventing dirty water from getting into our valuable ground water. Unfortunately, the sewerage systems are antiquated almost everywhere in the world.

Reconditioning is extremely difficult and expensive. Lapp has developed new cables that considerably simplify the inspection of sewerage systems. Thanks to this push cable, sewers can be examined quite simply with a video camera. As a result, even locations inaccessible in the past can now be reached. There are various cable types depending on the need: 1. Push cables: These consist of copper cores and a rigid central element that enables the cable to be guided into the sewer pipe. 2. Pull cables: These consist of

copper cores, coaxial cables and Kevlar elements to catch the tensile forces. The cable connects the sewer inspection robot and the central command post to the surface. If the damage is then localised and is not too large, additional sewerage reconditioning robots are used. These can repair the damage from inside without expensive excavation work. The cable must be able to withstand a great deal. It must be resistant to water, dirt and chemicals, must be extremely abrasion-resistant and must withstand very high tensile forces.

Revision video camera

For more than 25 years the company KaRo RohrreinigungsTechnology GmbH has been developing, producing and selling high-quality pipe and sewer cleaning machines and inspection systems. For the wiring of its sewer TV devices it puts its trust in the many decades of Lapp know-how.

Inspection and Sewerage Reconditioning Robots

Inspection robots/optical pipe and sewer inspections

In 1982 Wolfgang Rausch founded Rausch GmbH & Co. KG with the goal of producing TV inspection systems for optical pipe and sewer inspections. The fact that his concept was right from the outset is proven by the companys success. Since its founding, Wolfgang Rausch GmbH & Co. KG has grown on a hotly contested market to a com-

pany with world-renowned products. Today Wolfgang Rausch GmbH & Co. KG, with its team of 45 employees, is doing its utmost to continue this success in future - with innovative ideas and a tried-and-true philosophy, i.e. quality from the ground up. And thats why great importance is placed on the quality of the brand-name products of Lapp.

By using the specially developed UV radiator and its shadow-free positioning within the light train, the UV liners are optimally irradiated by the KASRO light sources. This method enables the efficient, economical reconditioning of sewers and piping. Thanks to the simple use at the construc-

tion site - without chemicals or excavation costs - damaged pipes can also be repaired in difficult-to-reach areas. The company ProKasro Mechatronik uses the special cable from Lapp described below to connect the light train to the central command post on the surface.
