Cette étude décrit les événements tumultueux de quatre jours à Rome, qui peuvent être considérés
comme un tournant dans l'histoire romaine, et donc l'histoire occidentale du 14 au 17 mars 44 av. J.C.
Une description exacte de cette période nécessite une chronologie fiable. Le principal problème est
l'incertitude existant jusqu'à maintenant sur la date des funérailles de César. Dans la littérature
ancienne, on a noté le 20 mars, dans la littérature plus récente le 18 mars, date qui est également
mentionnée par Goldsworthy dans sa récente biographie de César. Ici, on affirme que les funérailles de
César ont eu lieu en fin d'après-midi, dans la soirée du 17 mars, ce qui peut être déduit de l'écriture
d'un témoin oculaire, l'orateur Cicéron, et conduit à plus de cohérence en ce qui concerne les
informations que les anciens écrivains nous fournissent.
À la suite de cette nouvelle vision, il a été possible de mettre en place un calendrier de ces jours, qui
est presque fiable à l'heure actuelle. D’après cette chronologie, l'histoire de la mort de César est
largement reproduit à l'aide des informations de Appien, Plutarque, Suétone, Dion Cassius, Nicolas de
Damas, Velleius, Cicéron et quelques dizaines d'autres sources classiques.
Afin d'impliquer le lecteur d'aussi près que possible, l'histoire de ces jours très mouvementés a été
écrit dans le présent discours.
