SUCCESS can be defined in many ways. Ask 10 people what it means to them
and you’ll probably get 10 different answers.
To some, success is determined by a company’s size or profits. But when you ask business
owners about their success, you rarely hear them talk about those things.
There are many variables to consider when gauging success, such as: achieving personal growth;
realizing a dream; having pride in doing something you love; building a business from the ground
up; being honest and truthful, and environmentally conscientious; and seeing your ideas and hard
work come to fruition. Many would also agree that having the right attitude is a necessary ingredient
in the recipe for success.
Success doesn’t just happen. It requires time, talent and determination. And it’s not the
culmination of hard work ending at a finish line. It’s an ongoing journey that requires continuous
attention by a company or organization’s dedicated, hard-working staff. It’s more like a neverending
marathon, because once success is acquired, it must be maintained.
A successful company or organization is proud of and stands behind its product or service, as
well as its employees. It offers great customer service and it contributes to the community. In return,
it receives admiration and respect from its clients and the community.
Boulder and Broomfield counties are filled with many thriving companies and organizations
that have succeeded for many years. Read about many of them on the following pages.

Barbra Wilson
Christina’s
www.christinasluxuries.com
F or four generations, the women of Barbra Wilson’s family have created a lovely
foundation of lingerie. Wilson’s grandmother Kathryn started the business and her
mother Elizabeth continues to manage their New Jersey store, named Connie’s after
an aunt. Wilson brought it west 30 years ago when she opened Christina’s in Boulder,
naming her store for her 9-year-old daughter. That daughter, grown now and a new
mother herself, has opened her own shop in Berkeley called Beauty and Attitude.
“For me,” Wilson said, “lingerie is fundamental to life’s passages – the first bra,
the wedding night, the nursing bra. It’s so much more than self-expression. It’s all
encompassing. It’s part of us and it’s definitely part of me, Barbra.”
And, it is part of the Christina’s staff: Lynne Russell, who has worked in the shop
for 29 years; Judy Foley, 17 years; Maureen Boselli, 22 years. Another longtime
employee, Julie Wolfrum, moved to Berkeley and is managing Christina’s store.
“The secret of that long-lived success,” Wilson said, “is that I love what I do.”
Keeping customers happy is also a big part of it. “I give the customer what she
wants when she wants it. It’s not price, it’s what you get for your money. We have
variety, quality and service.”
Although Wilson says Christina’s will remain focused on lingerie, the store at
2425 Canyon Blvd. also offers dresses by Vera Wang and Nicole Miller and Elie
Tahari sportswear. “Christina’s still wants to be synonymous with lingerie, but we are
out to show we carry clothing and accessories as well,” she said.

“Our customers have made us the largest

S ince 1981 owners Gary and Debbie Chambers of Super Rupair, Inc., have
been Boulder’s Subaru gurus.
“Our niche is ‘Subaru Only,’ and our customers are the ultimate reason
for our success,” Gary asserts. “Our customers have made us the largest
independent Subaru repair shop in the nation.”
Besides service and repair, they buy and sell more used Suburus, along
with new, used and high-performance Suburu parts, than anyone else. Their
prices are competitive.
“I was attracted to owning my own shop because it was the best way to
receive a fair return for my hard work. As it turned out, the harder I worked
the more results I achieved,” says Gary.
The biggest challenge Gary and Debbie faced in 1981 is the same one
they face today – getting new customers to give Super Rupair a try. “When
they do, we prove that we’re the best shop,” Gary says with assurance.

would be in my college degree field of economics, but it turned out I really enjoyed the
window covering business. I guess it’s in my blood! I love the mix of design and math and
customer contact that is so important in this occupation.”
What is the secret of Howard’s Draperies success? Its owner is unequivocal. “Personal
service,” he says. “I have the ability to analyze customers’ wants and needs, so they get the
products that fit their home and lifestyle – at extremely reasonable prices. And customers
can count on a thorough follow-through.”
Howard identifies his customers as likely to be “people who want to beautify their
surroundings with attractive, affordable, and, in many cases, energy-efficient window coverings.”
Having installed window coverings since the 1960s, Howard is very particular about
the skills of his employees. “I have only the best installers working for me. The
seamstresses who create my fabric treatments are top-notch, too.”
Besides draperies, Howard offers many types of window treatments – wood blinds,
mini blinds, vertical blinds, Duette® shades, Pirouette Shading®, Silhouette® and
Vignette® shadings, shutters and more. He stocks thousands of yards of fabric. “Buying in
volume allows the unrivaled discounts I’m known for,” he says.
He has seen many changes in his industry. “Over the last 34 years window coverings
have changed from primarily just draperies to a variety of products that require expertise
in mechanical as well as functional design. The options available to the customer have
ballooned in recent years. I go to many local and national seminars to stay current.”

BOULDER’S TRUSTED MORTUARY

“Helping people get through a difficult

time makes the job worthwhile.”
S ome local businesses have been around so long that they’ve touched the lives of
several generations of Boulder County residents. Such is the case with Crist
Mortuary, which has been serving the needs of the local bereaved for over 100 years.
Crist Mortuary is Boulder’s only mortuary with a crematory on site; it also
has a chapel for celebration of life services and memorial services. Mountain
View Cemetery, spanning 35 acres, is located directly across the street, at
3016 Kalmia Ave.
The Crist family sold the business to the Dignity Memorial network in 1987.
Today, it is no longer locally owned but it is still locally managed, with an
emphasis on maintaining community-based, individualized customer service.
“Every family that we serve, no matter what they choose, we do everything
we can to help them,” said Mike Greenwood, general manager, who has been

Dick Sumerfield E ven as a youngster, Dick Sumerfield, owner of Boulder’s Verlo® Mattress
Factory, wanted to own his own business. He got his wish in 1989, when he
opened the first of his two local Verlo stores.

Verlo Mattress Factory Stores “At Verlo Mattress, we make a bed just for you,” he explains. “All our beds are
custom-made here in our factory. You try out the beds in our showroom, and we
tailor your bed to your needs. We use only the highest quality, most
technologically advanced materials, and yet we sell our custom-crafted mattresses
for less than other mattress retailers.”
How does Verlo keep prices down? “We build what we sell – locally – so the
customer saves! Our Craftsman-Direct® mattresses don’t sit in a warehouse or on a
truck for weeks or months. They’re made one day before delivery. Customers
spend less and sleep better on a mattress made just for them.”
No wonder Verlo has won the Boulder County Gold People’s Choice Award
for 10 years in a row!
Sumerfield is involved in the Boulder community. Recently, 12 Casey Middle
School students asked him the cost of a new mattress set for their friend who had
a brain tumor and would not have a good place to sleep when she came home
from the hospital. Sumerfield offered to donate the mattress and supervised the
girls as they built it. Then they all signed it, loaded it into the Verlo truck, and
delivered it to their friend’s house. “The 12 girls felt very good about what they
had built and what they had done,” Sumerfield said, with satisfaction.
Sumerfield explains how he and his staff stay motivated and successful, even
during these tough times. “Today, even more people look for value in what they

business, while brother Pat is in charge of the warehouse and production.
“A second generation of the Woodley family carries on the tradition, from marketing to

The Woodleys are proud to carry some of the most famous national brands of
furniture, such as Stanley, Flexsteel, Burnhardt, Bradington Young, Howard Miller, and
many more.
The family cites hard work, quality product and superior customer service as a recipe
for their success. As mass production and diminishing quality are, these days, common
consumer concerns, Woodley’s prides itself on old-fashioned craftsmanship. The original
goal was to provide quality, made-to-order furniture that could withstand the dry
Colorado climate, and that mission hasn’t changed over the years.
“The owners of the company are still very involved in the construction techniques and
designs,” explains Pat Woodley. “The majority of the product we sell is built in the United
States, with a high percentage crafted right here in Boulder County.”
The business also remains competitive because it offers furniture that often cannot be
