SUCCESS can be defined in many ways. Ask 10 people what it means to them
and you’ll probably get 10 different answers.
To some, success is determined by a company’s size or profits. But when you ask business
owners about their success, you rarely hear them talk about those things.
There are many variables to consider when gauging success, such as: achieving personal growth;
realizing a dream; having pride in doing something you love; building a business from the ground
up; being honest and truthful, and environmentally conscientious; and seeing your ideas and hard
work come to fruition. Many would also agree that having the right attitude is a necessary ingredient
in the recipe for success.
Success doesn’t just happen. It requires time, talent and determination. And it’s not the
culmination of hard work ending at a finish line. It’s an ongoing journey that requires continuous
attention by a company or organization’s dedicated, hard-working staff. It’s more like a neverending
marathon, because once success is acquired, it must be maintained.
A successful company or organization is proud of and stands behind its product or service, as
well as its employees. It offers great customer service and it contributes to the community. In return,
it receives admiration and respect from its clients and the community.
Boulder and Broomfield counties are filled with many thriving companies and organizations
that have succeeded for many years. Read about many of them on the following pages.

S ince 1981 owners Gary and Debbie Chambers of Super Rupair, Inc., have
been Boulder’s Subaru gurus.
“Our niche is ‘Subaru Only,’ and our customers are the ultimate reason
for our success,” Gary asserts. “Our customers have made us the largest
independent Subaru repair shop in the nation.”
Besides service and repair, they buy and sell more used Suburus, along
with new, used and high-performance Suburu parts, than anyone else. Their
prices are competitive.
“I was attracted to owning my own shop because it was the best way to
receive a fair return for my hard work. As it turned out, the harder I worked
the more results I achieved,” says Gary.
The biggest challenge Gary and Debbie faced in 1981 is the same one
they face today – getting new customers to give Super Rupair a try. “When
they do, we prove that we’re the best shop,” Gary says with assurance.

Howard’s Draperies
would be in my college degree field of economics, but it turned out I really enjoyed the
window covering business. I guess it’s in my blood! I love the mix of design and math and
customer contact that is so important in this occupation.”
What is the secret of Howard’s Draperies success? Its owner is unequivocal. “Personal
service,” he says. “I have the ability to analyze customers’ wants and needs, so they get the
products that fit their home and lifestyle – at extremely reasonable prices. And customers
can count on a thorough follow-through.”
Howard identifies his customers as likely to be “people who want to beautify their
surroundings with attractive, affordable, and, in many cases, energy-efficient window coverings.”
Having installed window coverings since the 1960s, Howard is very particular about
the skills of his employees. “I have only the best installers working for me. The
seamstresses who create my fabric treatments are top-notch, too.”
Besides draperies, Howard offers many types of window treatments – wood blinds,
mini blinds, vertical blinds, Duette® shades, Pirouette Shading®, Silhouette® and
Vignette® shadings, shutters and more. He stocks thousands of yards of fabric. “Buying in
volume allows the unrivaled discounts I’m known for,” he says.
He has seen many changes in his industry. “Over the last 34 years window coverings
have changed from primarily just draperies to a variety of products that require expertise
in mechanical as well as functional design. The options available to the customer have
ballooned in recent years. I go to many local and national seminars to stay current.”

Sumerfield is involved in the Boulder community. Recently, 12 Casey Middle

Landscape & Garden Architects However, it was while working in Germany as the lead designer of an elite
consortium of design-build firms where Tom most deepened his artistic and feeling
relationship to the elements of Nature that comprise our gardens. Later, his
collaboration with a “wild and woolly,” renowned Bohemian creator of fine gardens
catapulted Tom out of the textbook design approaches. “I learned to look not at
nature,” he says, “but from within it.”
“Today, at Altgelt & Associates,” Tom says, “we listen intently to both our clients and

opportunities of the land, to create gardens that are beautiful and ecologically balanced.
Our work is both an art and a science. We choose to collaborate with firms that also

Altgelt’s extended team includes other design firms such as Terrace Views, who
