Targeting Adolescent Health Concerns with Nutritional Therapies Promoting Weight Loss

The odds that teenagers today will grow up to enjoy aheart-healthy life are already fairly high. The American Heart Association has developed definitions and metrics for monitoring the cardiovascular health spectrum in children and adolescents and according to their recent review, poor diets and sedentary lifestyles may raise the risk of heart disease for 80 percent of todays adolescents. Currently, there are about 33.2 million adolescents across the country. A study published in Circulation (a magazine of the American Heart Association) describes how researchers used seven different components to calculate the heart health of 4,673 adolescentsfrom all major ethnic groups, aged between 12 to 19 years. These components included blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), healthy diet, cholesterol, physical activity, smoking, and blood sugar. The ideal guidelines used as a criteria for scoring included eating 4.5 or more cups a day of fruits and vegetables, two servings of fish a week, 3 ounces a day of whole grains, less than 1,500 mg of salt a day and no more than 450 calories worth of sugar-sweetened drinks a week. The participants answered a detailed questionnaire about their eating patterns and exercise habits. They also underwent medical exams.2 The study was led by Dr. Christina M. Shay, an assistant professor at the College of Public Health at the University of Oklahoma. The team analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted from 2005 to 2010 to measure the cardiovascular health of these children. The results of this study found that: Less than 1 percent in this age group followed an optimal diet 45 percent of the participants had acceptable levels of 5 or more of the health factors 44 percent of the girls; and 67 percent of the boys followed recommended levels of physical activity. 30 percent had elevated cholesterol levels 66 percent were of optimal weight Health Risks of Poor Nutrition and Inactive Lifestyle in Adolescents According to the researchers, the seeds of heart disease are sown in childhood and the results of the study represent a futuristic snapshot of the prevalence of heart disease in another 20 to 30 years. Theyshow a likely increase in the rates of obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and dysglycemiaas todays adolescent population reaches adulthood. If this trend is to change, then change must take place now. This can be done if doctors, parents andthe medical community help. Preventing or improving the current cardiovascular health status of todays teenagerswould include modifying the diet and engaging indaily physical activity.
