Disassemble Torque Converter

start by: a) separation of torque converter from transmission

1. Put the torque converter and housing in position on blocks as shown. 2. Remove the bolt, retainer (2) and gear (1) from the housing.

3. Fasten a hoist to torque converter housing (3) with two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts. Remove housing (3) from the torque converter. The weight of the housing is 160 lb. (72 kg).

4. Remove bolt (5), the retainer and gear (4) from housing (3).

5. Remove ring (6) that holds bearing (7) to gear (4).

6. Use a hammer and a punch to remove bearing (7) from gear (4) as shown.

7. Turn housing (3) over. 8. Turn gear (9) by hand until the access holes are in alignment with bolts (8). Remove the three bolts (8) and washers.

9. Remove gear (9) from housing (3). If necessary use a hammer and punch to remove gear (9) as shown.

10. Remove ring (10) from gear (9).

11. Use a hammer and punch from the opposite side of gear (9) to remove retainer (12) and bearing (11).

12. Remove pilot (13) from the torque converter housing.

13. Remove the bolt and retainer (14) from the torque converter shaft.

14. Turn the torque converter over and remove ring (15) from the carrier. Remove bolts (18). 15. Install four 5/16"-18 NC forcing screws and remove impeller (17) from housing (19). The bearing and one half of its inner race will come off the opposite end of shaft (16) when the impeller is removed.

16. Hit the end of shaft (16) with a soft faced hammer as shown to remove the second half of the inner bearing race.

17. Remove turbine (20) from impeller (17) and shaft.

18. Remove ring (23) from shaft (16) with tool (A). 19. Remove six bolts (22), the two plates under bolts (22) and guide wheel assembly (stator) (21).

20. Remove impeller (17) and the gear as a unit from shaft (16).

21. Remove bolts (24) and the two plates to remove the gear from impeller (17).

22. After gear (25) is removed from the impeller, use tool group (B) and a press to remove the bearing from the gear.

23. Remove shaft (16) and the bearing from carrier (26) with a soft faced hammer.

24. Use tool (A) to remove ring (27) that holds bearing (28) on shaft (16).

25. Use a press and tool (C) to remove bearing (28) from the shaft.

26. If necessary, remove seal ring (29) and pin (30) from shaft (16).

27. If necessary, remove sleeve (32) and pins (31) from carrier (26).

Assemble Torque Converter

NOTICE
Before the torque converter is assembled, see Torque Converter Clearance Checks. These clearances must be correct for the torque converter to operate with efficiency.

1. Install pins (1) and sleeve (2) in carrier (3). Install the sleeve until it makes contact with the counterbore in the carrier. Make sure the tab on sleeve (2) fits in the groove of the carrier.

2. Install the pin in the end of shaft (5). Install seal ring (6) on shaft (5). 3. Heat bearing (4) to a maximum temperature of 275F (135C). Install the bearing on shaft (5). Use tool (A) and install the ring that holds bearing (4) to shaft (5).

4. Put carrier (3) in position on the bearing and shaft (5) as shown. Install ring (7) to hold the bearing in carrier (3).

5. Use tool (B) and a press to install bearing (9) in gear (10). Install the bearing until it is even with the surface of the gear shown. 6. Put impeller (8) in position on gear (10) and install the eight bolts and two plates to hold them together. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20 1 lb.ft. (25 1 Nm).

7. Install impeller (8) and the gear in position on carrier (3) as shown.

8. Put guide wheel assembly (stator) (11) in position in impeller (8). Install the two plates and six bolts that hold stator (11). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20 1 lb.ft. (25 1 Nm).

9. Use tool (A) to install the ring that holds turbine (12) in position on shaft (5). Install turbine (12) on shaft (5).

10. Heat one half of the inner race, for the bearing assembly, to a maximum temperature of 275F (135 C). Install the race on shaft (5) with the groove up as shown.

11. Install the impeller, turbine and shaft in housing (13) as shown. Tighten the bolts that hold the impeller to the housing to a torque of 20 1 lb.ft. (25 1 Nm).

12. Turn the torque converter assembly over. Install the ring on bearing (14) and install the bearing in housing (13) as shown. Make sure the bearing is in correct contact with the inner half of the race.

13. Heat the other half of the inner bearing race to a maximum temperature of 275F (135C). Install the inner half of the race with the groove toward the inside until it makes contact with the first inner race installed. 14. Install the retainer and bolt on the end of the shaft. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 81 4 lb.ft. (111 5 Nm).

16. Put retainer (17) on gear (18). 15. Install pilot (15) on housing (13). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 36 2 lb.ft. (46 3 Nm). 17. Heat bearing (16) to a maximum temperature of 275F (135C). Install bearing (16) on gear (18). Install the ring that holds bearing (16) in position.

18. Install gear (18) in torque converter housing (19) as shown. Tighten the three bolts that hold the gear retainer to the housing.

19. Heat bearing (20) to a maximum temperature of 275F (135C). Install bearing (20) on gear (21). Install the ring that holds bearing (20) in position.

20. Put gear (21) in housing (19) as shown. Install the lock and bolt in location (22) to hold gear (21) in position.

21. Fasten a hoist to housing (19) with two 3/8" - 16 NC forged eyebolts. Put housing (19) in position on the torque converter assembly so that the bolt holes in the housing are in alignment with the bolt holes in the carrier. NOTE: Make sure the teeth of gear (18) are engaged correctly with the teeth of the gear fastened to the impeller or housing (19) can not be installed all of the way on the torque converter. 22. Install the bolts and washers that hold housing (19) to the carrier. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40 5 lb.ft. (55 7 Nm).

23. Install gear (23) on the torque converter shaft as shown. Install the retainer and bolt to hold gear (23). Tighten the bolt to a torque of 81 5 lb.ft. (111 7 Nm). end by: a) connection of torque converter to transmission
