Every year as Editor of the Crab Tales your local publication, I am asked to the annual Seaside Special Press Launch on the Pier. On Thursday June 6th, armed with my camera, I popped along to the Pier to meet this years cast of jolly souls and watch them run through their routines

with Di Cooke, the Director, Creator and Choreographer, managing the early day performances. Di Cooke, is indeed a master of her skills and has always pulled off a great show for Openwide over the years since 2001 that she has been involved in.

HANDY NUMBERS

One of the best thing to do first is to aplogise if one has made a mistake. Not that I make many in any issue we produce, of course. So let me kick off by apologising to one of our newly awarded Junior Attendants, as I spelt her name incorrectly, who is Bethany Cuff, not Luff as I wrote. It has been now, nearly two years ago since I drove my 1970 VW Kubelwagen to Matt Boyers Body Shop for some TLC. A great deal of time & energy has gone into making it now look almost like new and by the time this issue comes out it will be back on the road with me driving along with a smile at least a mile wide. To many, a car is just a piece of metal, with 4 wheels holding it off the road, but a classic motorcar really is something to behold and more importantly to enjoy driving around with so many good people smiling from ear to ear. Matt and his team have done a great deal of enormous amount of work on my VW and I would happily recommend them to anyone who wants their car restored, however old & burnt out it may look before Matt takes over. Now that our wonderful* summer has arrived, we have the Cromer Carnival to look forward to with a great team of Carnival Royal Party members and so many events going on all over the area this summer. There really is no reason why we cannot all start smiling from ear to ear.

* Be assured we are about to start weeks of lovely weather right through until late September. So yes the weather is going to be great for this years Cromer Carnival, be assured. Cromers Summer End Of The Pier Show looks pretty good this year, but as this was written before the opening night, I have once again asked Cindy Johnson to write a review of the show when she and I attend on Saturday 15th June. Cindys report will appear in our next issue out on July 6th. I draw readers attention to Special Delivery on Page 19. Surely this is the answer, to an ever increasing problem we all suffer from. Likewise in the letter on Page 4, Car Parking Charges really do seem to destroy any hope for Cromer in the long run.

Dear Philip,
Thank you very much for printing our letter and printing the photos. I am not quite sure what Mr. Paffett means, (letters page 4 Issue 013). I think he does not fully understand the bottle neck at the junction of the B 1436 Felbrigg / A 148 Holt Road. However it is good that he took the trouble to write to you with his suggestion. Your comments are very much appreciated and completely correct. A mini roundabout similar to the Roughton one would fit our junction very adequately. Our problem is the County Council officers who seem to call all the shots and have so much power over elected Councillors, who even override the Dept. for Transport, who pass the buck back on to County Councils, there seems to be no consistency of speed limits and the way NCC select projects to be done is just disgraceful and wrong. Even the Disability Discrimination Act does not seem to apply to this terribly unsafe and dangerous scheme they have just completed on the Bittern Line Railway Bridge. We visited Mr Norman Lamb MP on Friday and he is as frustrated as we are as to the inappropriate action the Council has taken and not taken on this stretch of road. I do hope that the newly elected Councillors can act together as a team to knock some common sense into the NCC officers to do the sensible thing. I know it is not only about money as we see them spending money on unnecessary schemes such as the West Runton bridge which cost nearly 1 Million to reinforce to take 40 ton lorries, which is a joke as

When I correspond with the Planning and Transportation Department at County Hall pointing out, using their own surveys and figures their inaccuracies, they just manipulate the truth. Dear Philip.
I liked your comment re the loss of a Blue Flag for Mundesley. To be eligible water must be clean enough to meet the highest standards of European law and everything from disabled access to the number of bins is checked. Ive always thought it ridiculous that the flag is based on the quality of water of the previous year. The same thing happened in 2002 and when I questioned it was told that the loss of the blue flag was the result of a one-off incident which was no longer a problem Presumably weve had another one-off incident. We did a trip into the GHOST TOWN known as CROMER at 7 o/clock Monday evening. The first thing we saw was a homeless woman living in a BUS SHELTER. We then continued to the CAR PARK which, according to the last CRAB TALES (issue 012), said that Parking after 6pm was FREE. THIS IS NOT SO. Everyone has to pay, including Blue Badge holders. We also found another homeless girl, on the Beach. It was a fine sunny evening, and the town was deserted. IF the council want to encourage tourism, they need to SCRAP THE PARKING CHARGES. Northrepps Primary school were inspected by OFSTED just before Whitsun. The Governing Body is delighted to announce that OFSTED found us to be a good school ( a firm good according to Michael Miller, our Inspector) with some outstanding teaching and excellent leadership. Thanks for this must go to Mrs. Clifft our head teacher and her team for their dedication and hard work. The Mundesley & District branch celebrated their 85th Anniversary in May 2012 and their goal to reach 85 members has been achieved & surpassed as they now have 87 members. They hold meetings on the 3rd Weds of each month in the Coronation Hall Mundesley. On August 14th there will be A Celebration of Summer Tea with musical accompaniment. Having had, for a number of years, lodgers from the Seaside Special, staying with us in Cromer, we became very aware of how much work is involved over the summer of the Pier Show. Once again, as always, the Pier Pavilion Theatre was full of young people doing their routines to the media and several friends of the Pier on hand. You can only admire everyone involved with pulling off this summer show that makes Cromer a very special place for visitors to enjoy, year on year. Before enjoying a light lunch the whole cast performed a sample of this years show, which included Dain Cordean, the Illusionist, Jo Little, the Comedienne, Danny Posthill, the Impressionist and the Principle Vocalist David Jon ONeil as well as the Seaside Special dancers. For now until the opening of the second show it is a case of heads down and get it running smoothly. I have to say that I am looking forward to the opening night on June 15th, that I will be attending with Cindy Johnson who will be writing a review of this years End Of The Pier Show. Yesterday.......
.....my daughter again asked why I didn't do something useful with my time. Talking about my "doing something useful" seemed her favorite topic of conversation. She was "only thinking of me" and suggested I go down to the senior center and hang out with the guys. I did and when I got home last night I decided to teach her a lesson about staying out of my business. I told her that I had joined a parachute club. She said: "Are you nuts? You 're almost 70 and you're going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I even showed her that I had a membership card. She said to me: "Good grief, where are your glasses! This is a membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club." "I'm in trouble again, & I don't know what to do... I signed up for five jumps a week." I told her. She fainted. It really is a case of supplying you with all you need to catch more than your fair share of fish. Otherwise Dene is there to advise and help you to become a better fisherman with his advice, as well as Sea Angling Tuition and Guided Shore Angling Trips. For someone like me with a seriously limited knowledge of fishing and how to catch one, this must be the first port to call in on, as Dene is a quiet & logical person who, as well as listening, can and does point his customers in the right direction. Whether it is something to sit on, a canoe to fish from, or one of the numerous rods or

reels you might need, to bring home more than enough fish for your supper. One important fact to consider is that Dene supplies bait and he stresses the importance of using the right kind of bait for the job in hand. Listening to the comments of numerous customers coming into his full shop, all of them, however experienced they seemed, were keen to pick up the pearls of wisdom being offered them by Dene and all of them left the shop with a broad smile on their face. I left the shop knowing a great deal more about fishing than before I turned up. PK

.......members that make up the Trunch Art Group have each painted a 9 x16 inch panel to create this delightful image of the Trunch Pub, in the centre of the village. Despite the differing views each of them had of the same setting the overall outcome is indeed well worth the time & energy involved in making this work of art that will end up being

placed permanently in the Village Hall for future generations to enjoy. The Trunch Art Group are a keen band of merry painters, who regularly meet in the hall and while painting away enjoy each others company and advice as well as a cup of tea and of course a slice of cake. PK

Like Many Good Souls...

...Lis and I did a brief tour of some of the local Open Studios in early June. Because we only had very little time to spare, we only managed to see a couple of studios that day, the first, which Lis had visited earlier that week, was at Barrington Farm, just outside Walcott. RoaR (formerly known as St. Brannocks Gallery) was set up in Mundesley, in 1996, as a non-profit making organisation to promote artwork made by people with learning disabilities. In February 2004 the organisation was renamed and became a registered charity. I have to say the art work on display around this place was really delightful. From there we drove over to the exhibition at the Sugar & Spice Cafe in Bacton and enjoyed an array of work, particularly that of Lucy Care. (Paintings below)

A Yorkshireman's Wife Dies........

.... and the widower decides that her headstone should have the words: "She were thine" engraved on it. He calls the stone mason, who assures him that the headstone will be ready a few days after the funeral. True to his word the stone mason calls the widower to say that the headstone is ready and would he like to come and have a look. When the widower gets there he takes one look at the stone to see that it has been engraved "She were thin".

He explodes: "'ells bells man, you've left the bloody "e" out, you've left the bloody "e" out!" The stone mason apologises profusely and assures the poor widower that it will be rectified the following morning. Next day comes and the widower returns to the stone mason: "There you go sir, I've put the "e" on the stone for you". The widower looks at the stone and then reads out aloud: "E, she were thin". I Know This Young Lady

I must say that when I first received a press release a couple of weeks ago, that Rebecca Wass was the new manager of the Cromer Pier Show, I looked at the photograph of Rebecca and thought: I know this young lady It was not until I attended the press launch of this years Seaside Special (See Front Page) on June 6th, that I realised that YES, I did know this lovely young lady, from having played the role of one of the Wise Man in the Mundesley Christmas Eve Pageant over 18 months ago, while Rebecca was playing the role of the Virgin Mary. To say that her performance, compared with mine in the Pageant, was a great deal better, is hardly a compliment to anyone. So while chatting to this lovely new face in Cromer, I took the opportunity to ask her several questions about her new role with the Cromer Pier this summer. Rebecca I have to kick off by asking you How did you end up here on the end of Cromers famous Pier managing this important asset? Ive always loved the Norfolk coastline and enjoy visiting Cromers Historic Pier as well as spending time in Mundesley and Overstrand so when I saw the advert for General Manager I knew I had to apply. I have recently been working as Creative Arts Tutor for Broadland Council Training Services where I also taught Business Admin and Customer Service. I have also worked in and around Norfolk & Suffolk, doing a number of different roles including working for the Youth Offending Service, teaching Drama to adults with visual impairments and working for the Museum Service. Prior to this I trained as a Theatre Manager with Clearchannel Entertainment LTD and worked at The Grand Opera House in York, Sunderland Empire and The Beck Theatre in London.

Ambulance Concerns

N. Norfolk Labour Partys Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed Anthony Marshs report into the East of England Ambulance Service, confirming their concerns. The report confirms campaigners were right to start the petition (now 11,000 signatures) against cuts to Double Staffed Ambulances (DSA); particularly as the report points out the push towards Rapid Response Vehicles has left too many vehicles serving patients without being able to take them to hospital. It says the Trust is providing insufficient DSAs and that more are required. Cromer Pier seemed the perfect opportunity to link both my love of theatre, the seaside, community work and leisure together. Besides running the Pier Show what is this famous seaside Pier offering the many visitors this summer? As part of the Summer SeaSide Special we are offering a Family Fun Saturday Matinee for all the families to enjoy, this will be a chance for children to meet Claude the Crab, the Theatres mascot and hopefully meet the cast of the show along with competitions and fun activities for all the family. Alongside our SeaSide Special we will also have a variety of Concerts from Rock N Roll Paradise to The Magic of the Bee Gees and Jackson Live in Concert. Thank you Rebecca can you now tell me what you do besides working on the Pier in Cromer as life is more than just working all the time. I enjoy acting and directing and I have worked with The Great Hall Theatre Company, Crude Apache and The Maddermarket Players in Norwich. I also do a variety of charity work and enjoy spending Christmas in Mundesley helping with the Free Lunch on Christmas Day and the Christmas Pageant. The local Labour Party believes this report is another indication of the growing A&E crisis across England and Anthony Marsh attributes some handover problems experienced in the East of England to problems across the country. Denise Burke, chair of Nth Norfolk Labour Party said: We set up the Act on Ambulances campaign 12 months ago with real concerns about the proposals to cut our ambulance services budget, and with the aim to halt the move to reduce the number of ambulances on the street. This report confirms that a reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles and private ambulance overtime has taken the Trust in the wrong direction, and agrees we need more ambulances in our region to address response times. The report also confirms our fears about those at the top of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, who we presented our petition to last year. They did not listen then, and I believe the directors should be reconsidering their position.

Behind every group of successful men, there is a group of successful women and it is certainly the case with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band. Whilst the men outnumber the ladies by about 6 to 1, the contribution made by the fairer sex in this ensemble certainly equals that of their male colleagues. Jenny Thomas plays tenor horn. Julie Snaith plays the cornet and in charge of the Band, Jane Bussey, Director of Music, keeps the musicians under control with her baton. Heather Shepherd occupies the percussion so needs to know how to play a variety of drums and cymbals, as well as instruments like the xylophone. Why not come along to see and hear them in action, when as part of the Patronal weekend of St Peter's Church, Sheringham, the Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band will be presenting a concert, featuring the Church Choir on Saturday 29th June. It starts at 7.30 pm. Although admission is free, a voluntary donation at the end of the evening would be gratefully appreciated. We look forward to seeing you.

Do you enjoy knitting or crocheting? Then Norfolk Knitters is for you. We currently have 1170 knitters and 33 knitting groups across the county making a whole range of things including jumpers, hats, scarves premature baby clothes and squares for blankets. Every day more knitters join us. Our members knit as much or as little as they like but everything they knit goes to help someone, somewhere. We send at least 50 sacks of knitting every month to the International Aid Trust as well as distributing items to a whole range of local charities which include the premature baby unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, the Hedgehog Rescue Appeal, the Dogs Trust at Snetterton and the Haven Refuge for Women and Children escaping Domestic Violence. The grant also helps towards the cost of a fourmonthly newsletter which goes out to all our members and enables members of our action group to travel round the county helping to set up new groups of knitters, visit existing groups, pick up knitting and drop off wool. Our growing number of Knit and Natter groups provide a chance for people to get together, see what other people are knitting, share patterns and enjoy each others company. There are also many members who knit in their own homes and we frequently have new projects to interest members some of us are currently knitting flowers for a project supporting John Grooms Court home for disabled young adults in Norwich! For everyone there is a real sense of purpose in doing something they enjoy which also really useful. A Plethora Of Doctors?

Has anyone asked why we need more doctors? Between 1960 & 2011 the population rose from approximately 52.4 million to 62.6 million: an increase of approximately 20%. Over the same period, medical school intake rose by more than 70%. Between 1999 & 2010 the number of consultants alone increased from 21,410 to 35,781, an increase of some 65%, and between 1999 and 2009 the number of NHS managers increased by 82%. There have been many reports of increased waiting times and imminent failures of A&E departments, but in view of the actual figures none of the explanations makes much sense. The increase in doctors, consultants & managers far outpaces the increase in the population. Technological advances have made outpatient investigation easier and much faster. If these statistics were transferred to any other organisation the obvious conclusion would be an increase in inefficiency. The Norfolk Jazz Quartet

During the last week in July, The Mundesley Players will stage Shakespeare's most wellknown romantic comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in the Coronation Hall. A cast of twenty, aged from 13 to 60 plus, are busy rehearsing and working on the text. This is real community theatre, since half the cast are school pupils and the rest are adults. The "Dream" intertwines the misadventures of two young couples who escape from Athens to the nearby woods and the rehearsals of a group of local craftsmen or "mechanicals", whose play of Pyramus and Thisbe will be performed at the wedding celebration of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Shakespeare enjoyed the concept of a "play within a play" and this is the best-loved example. Linking all the human to-ing & fro-ing are the interventions of Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his rascally aide, Puck, whose efforts add comic confusion. Bottom, the Weaver, gains an ass's head and the temporary affections of Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Several familiar faces will be seen together with some exciting new young talent. A small group of unaccompanied singers will provide musical atmosphere. Directed by David Ross, the play will take place on: July 25th, 26th & 27th at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from 6th July. Vic. will be known to many local people from his days with the Just Jazz Good Time Jazz Band which had strong links with Mundesley. The Quartet plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book, which is becoming very popular. The event will be an informal evening in the conservatory at the Manor Hotel, music will start at 7.30pm. and admission will be free. You can just drop in for a drink or have a meal. A small town in Spain has devised a novel, and highly effective, way of keeping its streets free from dog mess - scooping up the offending deposits and sending them back to the dog owners in an official box marked "Lost Property". For one week the town council of Brunete sent out a crack squad of 20 undercover volunteers to spot people failing to scoop up after their pets; they approached each owner and struck up a casual conversation to find out the name of the dog. "With the name of the dog and the breed it was possible to identify the owner from the pet database held in the town hall," explained a spokesman. The volunteers then packaged up the poo in a box branded with the town hall insignia and posted it to the owners. In all, 147 of these deliveries were made during the course of the experiment in February; since then the town has seen a 70% drop in dog mess. From The Week.
