Please remember that Veolia are sponsoring a
recycling/freecycling stall at Surrey Street Market on
Saturday 29 June: it will be a day of free exchange of
items. People can take items that they no longer want
and take away other peoples belongings. The activity is from10amto
3pm. Veolia usually weigh the total amount brought in so they can
report this to the council for their recycling and reuse reporting and try
to encourage local charities to take part and advertise their work on
other stalls. Typical items include books, DVDs, clothes, games, toys,
crockery, electricals (PAT tested) and small furniture.
Veolia needs to look after the
Neighbourhood Recycling Centre at
the Wickham Road/Bridle Road/
Monks Orchard Road junction. It is
a very popular site and the way it is
currently managed is grossly
insufficient: it is becoming an
eyesore and carrier bags are flying
around. On Sunday 23 May, a tall
refrigerator had been dumped there. Moreover, the new layout of the
junction spells danger for the user of this facility because cars speed
away in the slip road.

Recreational, lunch or tea time drug taking is a common occurrence
in this part of Shirley. Now used condoms have been found. The SNT
was informed because Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) spreads quickly.

Val dOrcia
One would expect me to be biased about
Tuscany. Indeed I am. In 2004 the Val
dOrcia was added to the UNESCO list of
World Heritage Sites under these criteria:
Criterion (iv): The Val dOrcia is an
exceptional reflection of the way the
landscape was re-written in Renaissance
times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an
aesthetically pleasing pictures.
Criterion (vi): The landscape of the Val dOrcia was celebrated by
painters from the Scuola Senese, which flourished during the
Renaissance. Images of the Val dOrcia, and particularly depictions of
landscapes where people are depicted as living in harmony with
nature, have come to be seen as icons of the Renaissance and have
profoundly influenced the development of landscape thinking.

HERBS
A suggested herb society in Croydon and the surrounding area
the Croydon Herb Society.
As an amateur herb and wild-flower enthusiast, I have been slightly
frustrated by the fact that there is no local herb society in London, the
nearest Herb Society Group being in West Sussex or Essex and other
groups in the North West of England, Dorset, East Yorkshire or the
Wild West of England.
The Croydon Natural History Society, which I suspect is on its last legs,
has given up on herbs etc and has donated its entire herbarium to the
South London Botanical Institute. The SLBI is a marvellous place with
a great library and garden and I would thoroughly recommend a visit
I follow Croydon Transition Town, although I have not been able to attend a
single meeting yet. I am on their mailing list.
When Mike Oliver wrote to the Group about a Herb Society in Croydon, I
contacted him straightaway. I have been a vegetarian most of my life and
herbs are very important for anything I cook. I enjoy the colours and the
smells of wild flowers and herbs.
Rosemary, sage and wild garlic remind me of my childhood in Tuscany. SL
offers the reader alternative choices.

(free) or even membership for a measly 15 a year. Chelsea Physic
Garden and half a dozen other London gardens with a herb emphasis
are also very useful if you want to see herbs growing or find out more
by taking a course. Together we could explore possibilities.
None of the above answers my own particular wish to have a group of
interested people meet and enjoy herbs (and wildflowers, since there
is often no real difference in definition).
The scope of such a group could be simply to meet, exchange
information, talk about herbs and wildflowers, visit herb gardens or
take part in field trips, have visiting lecturers, find out more about the
various uses and aspects of herb gardening, e.g. medicinal, culinary
and fabric dyeing.
Croydon has a number of places and organisations where mutual
interests come together for those interested in botany generally and
herbs and wildflowers in particular, for example The Croydon Ecology
Centre. Croydon also has one of the largest acreages of parkland and
green space in the London Boroughs. This suggests to me that a local
herb society would be a viable project.
At this stage we are simply kicking the idea around and there is no
definite venue for meetings etc though there are some good ideas
such as the walled garden at Park Hill Rec or the gardens at Croydon
Minster. We can look at these ideas without rushing the decisions.
Personally my interest in herbs is just that an interest. I am not a great
expert but would like to learn more and share my enthusiasm with
others. I have acquired some skills by trial and error such as
propagation that I would be pleased to pass on. If you have some
deeper knowledge from which we all can benefit or want to learn more,
I think this is for you. Again, I speak only for myself, but I find that
groups of people that start off by enjoying each others company
always achieve more than just signing up for an idea. So I would like
this to be fun.
I am kicking things off by contacting members of Croydon Transition
Towns and The Country Park Beekeepers Association but perhaps
you would like to think about friends you know that might also be
interested.

Passion and tradition
A few years ago, we discovered Krumiri
Rossi, by chance, in a shop whilst
driving back from Italy. I knew the name
because biscuits called Krumiri
classici, made by Bistefani, are sold in
supermarkets but this box was different,
old fashioned and attractive. I simply had
to buy it. When we opened it, the fragrance
of the biscuits was extraordinary. We fell in love
with them. It is not easy to find the real Krumiri and
we seldom travel by car, so we had to order them. However, this year
we travelled by van and stopped in Casale Monferrato, a beautiful
town in Piedmont, and visited the shop where Krumiri are made. It
was well worth the detour and what I expected: tradition and passion.
We met Signora Portinaro
and her husband who even
gave us a stylish DVD made
to celebrate the biscuits. We
bought lots of boxes. We will
go back there at the earliest
opportunity and spend
some time in this attractive
town, safe after the Eternit factory was closed down.

According to legend, Krumiri were invented partly for fun and partly by
chance. Italy had been a unified
country for only a few years and
the repercussions of the
Risorgimento could still be felt.
After spending an evening with
friends in his local caf,
Domenico Rossi invited them all
to his confectioners kitchen and
there, with a little alchemy and a
touch of magic, he baked the

very first Krumiri.
We dont really
know for sure if
thats exactly
what happened,
but thats what
legend tells and
we believe it. One
thing we do
know for sure is
that in 1878, as
the newspapers
of the day report,
the one and only
Krumiri were an
instant sweet
success in the
Italian art of confectionery.
The Kings favourite nibble
Who knows if Domenico Rossi could have imagined that Krumiri
would become the symbol of his beloved town of Casale? As the new
century dawned, Krumiri had already received a series of important
official accolades, such as a bronze medal at the Turin Universal
Exhibition in 1884 and Diplomas as Supplier to the House of his
Highness the Duke of Aosta, the Duke of Genoa and Supplier to the
Royal House of Italy to Umberto I. And, in 1900, it won the Grand
Award of Honour at the Casale Exhibition.
The fragrant biscuit through history
Passion will always take you far. Its like longingly following a smell, a
fragrance that wafts out of a confectioners kitchen, filling the air of a
towns streets, enchanting the senses and imagination, and thereby
perpetuating the history of those who instigated and nurtured that
passion. In the Twenties, Angelo Ariotti took over Domenico Rossis
business and, with it, the recipe and the Krumiro patent, so the biscuit
could continue its grand tradition through history, the same as it
always was.

Conquering the world
Then Ercole Portinaro took over the company in 1953, followed by
his son Romolo and Krumiri began to outgrow their original local roots
day by day, finally conquering the whole of Italy and the world. In the
space of just a few years they reached the Italian Presidents Palace,
the Italian Parliament, and even headed overseas to the White House,
where they have been appreciated by presidents, famous actors,
showbiz stars and Nobel prize winners. Without ever changing.
Wonderful Krumiri!
At the dawn of the third millennium, Krumiri are an institution. Theres
always the strong desire to look towards the future and a new era,
but also to respect traditions that convey values and security at the
same time. The Portinaro familys confectionery has been a point of
reference for many famous gourmets. In 1998, the President of the
United States, Bill Clinton, received a gift of a selection of the best
produce from the Piedmont region, but he liked one in particular, as
he wrote enthusiastically in a letter of thanks, with a special mention
for the the wonderful Krumiri.
The tradition continues
But thats the tin my grandma gave me! Peoples reactions to Krumiri
are passionate, immediate and honest. Its like love at first sight, but
with a feeling of pride: there isnt anyone from Casale who wont give
the flavour that has become the symbol of their land as a gift to others.
Today the company is managed by Anna, the daughter of Romolo
and Dorotea Portinaro. Her passion is fed by the pleasure of doing
things just as they should be done, and done well of course, like in
times gone by. And by continuing a tradition that has now become a
part of history.
The secret ingredient is simplicity
Soft wheat flour, fresh eggs, butter, sugar, pure vanillin, and, most
importantly, no water. The only thing that softens the mixture are eggs
and butter, giving Krumiri their special irresistible fragrance. Thats how
its been done since 1878. Staying faithful to the most authentic
tradition, never changing the recipe and the simple, wholesome
ingredients are what make Krumiri unique.

Better for Beddington?
I was surprised to
receive an invite from
the Mayor of Sutton for
the launch of Better for
Beddington.
Beddington means
incinerator to me and I
could not understand
what it was all about. I
knew nothing about
Carew Manor, its Great
Hall and the Dovecote.
I phoned Jill and asked
if she would join me.
She very graciously
accepted and off we
went to explore and learn about the place. It was rather a wet and grey
day. Carew Manor is an impressive building that needs some TLC. It is
a former country house known as Beddington Place or Beddington Hall.
The roof of the great hall dates from around 1500 and is Grade 1 listed.
Carew Manor The Museum and Heritage Service arranges tours of the
hall and dovecote on certain Sunday afternoons during the year. For
2013 they are: 12 May, 16 June, 29 September, 20 October. Tours take
place at 2pm and 3.30pm. Tickets are 5 and bookable from 020 8770
4781.

Carew Manor is now a
community special school
for pupils aged 7 to16 years
with moderate learning
difficulties. In addition,
some of the pupils have
Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
The presentation was well attended
and organised. The leaflet a vision
for the river wandle, printed using
vegetable-based inks on Forest
Stewardship Council certified paper
containing 100% post-consumer
waste, is impressive. The aims of
the vision are: the river supporting a
mosaic of habitats with high
biodiversity; water, plentiful and
clean, and varied in its flow speeds, widths and depths; good access
with sympathetically managed pathways along the whole river;
engagement with Councils, businesses, government agencies and
public working together to improve the river. Great stuff. I politely asked
the Mayor of Sutton about his views on the incinerator tower. He politely
smiled and offered me a plate to partake with refreshments.
DISH, Neil Dishington, cartoonist extraordinaire was in attendance and
offered free sketches to visitors who told him about their memories. I
approached him and asked if he could draw something to reflect the
future. I told him about the 95 metres tower that might go up nearby.
The sketch is on SL front page. It will be framed!
A lot of money seems to go into this vision. A lot of spin too.
Jill commented: This was a rare opportunity to visit Carew Manor. The
visit to the dovecote and the talk on the hall were a joy. As for the vision
of the river Wandle and its surroundings, it is wonderful if you are looking
with one eye shut. If you open that eye you see the incongruous image
of the incinerator tower and, while you are standing in this idyllic place,
you will be breathing in stuff that you do not even want to know the
names of.

A June Mayoral Question Time of infernos
and incinerators and of clear blue water to
douse a noisy first hour with a packed
heckling audience of fire fighters.
Croydons Kingsley primary school students,
regular visitors to
the City Hall
chamber, will have
been non-plussed
by the barracking
and chanting adults in the public gallery.
A gallery full of opponents to cuts in fire cover and to increased
response times to fires brought an
unsympathetic atmosphere for
Mayor Boris for the first hour of the
Question Time session. Labour
member Len Duvall won applause
for asserting that Mayor Johnson
speaks for the rich and not the
everyday Londoner. The barrackers
left after so disrupting affairs with
chanting that the meeting was put
into temporary abeyance.
When discussing the import of doubled response times to fires Mayor
Boris ever more eccentrically ruffled hair for the cameras and his joking
around by answering questions in French just does not look or sound
that funny. Old Etonian patronising and whimsy doesnt chime well
when considering fire mortalities.
Labour dedicated most of their questioning to defending public
services in the form of the fire service.
Conservatives devoted most of their time to arguing the merits of the
free market calling for the abolition of the minimum wage for students
leaving university.

In between all this Mayor Johnson pushed a London centric pro EU
membership stance but diluting this by saying that he was not pro
Europe at any price.
Lib-Dem Stephen Knight worried about
the Infernos night club that houses up
1,500 revellers in Clapham Town where
fire engine response time is to double
from 9 to 18 minutes.
Mayor Boris felt that Lib-Dems should not complain as they supported
spending cuts as part of the national government up the Thames at
Westminster.
Things got personal when Labour Assembly member Jennette Arnold
said that response times to Mayor Johnsons
home was 21 seconds compared to 6 minutes
and 26 seconds to Great Ormond Street hospital.
Mayor Johnson said that Arnolds remarks were
a disgraceful thing to say and contemptible.
With the protestors gone attention turned to tackling those who seek
violence in the name of Islam. Mayor Johnson called for increased
monitoring of Skype and of students in universities who do not support
liberal Western principles.
When it came to English nationalist protests our local London
Assembly member felt that whether such public protests were allowed
should be left in the hands of the local police borough commander.
OConnell also felt that police recruitment practices should be changed
to increase black and minority ethnic representation in the Met.
Whilst fellow Conservative Victoria Borwick concentrated on her
blackberry OConnell also ventured the view that young people should
be given the priority in increasing jobs in London. The Mayor employed
the rather ugly, brutish language of having boot camps for young
business people.
The Mayor would not though be drawn into supporting his
Conservative colleagues call for the minimum wage to be dropped for

students committing to 6 month contracts with the option of being
considered for a job after the first six month period. Assembly
Conservatives also called for the downgrading of employment rights in
small firms.
Conservative Andrew Boff sought support from the Mayor to have
more houses for families built rather than Chinese money building high
rise flats less suited for families. The Mayor recognised the problem
but felt unable to intervene in the operation of the hidden hand of the
market, a concept that he embraced after eschewing it in his previous
answer.
Mayor Johnson said that he was tired of getting
texts from ministers in their official cars
complaining about traffic jams. He called for them
to use a bike in London (with secure red box for
government papers one presumes).
Hands rather unusually flapping, Labour member
Fiona Twycross asked about the proposed
incinerator in our community. Twycross was joined
by Green member Jenny Jones in
questioning the Mayor. Planning
guru, and also Labour member,
Nicky Gavron talked of the incinerator offering up the
prospect of the incinerator
capital of southern England.
According to Gavron there is insufficient refuse in the
four local boroughs to burn and that waste, Gavron
asserted, will come from as far as Guildford and
Reading.

Giovannas Column
I often meet Celia during the school run. She
has three children of 5, 3 and 1 and although
raising a family is typically quite demanding for
most mothers with three young children, Celia
always seems to find the time to read a good
book, to go out with her friends in the evening,
to go out for dinner with her husband, to go to
her yoga classes and even to hit some balls in
the golf range almost every week. In addition,
she also works part time from home on her own
business. I found this quite fascinating, because, in my view, it is incredibly
difficult to be a mum and not be extremely exhausted at the end of the day
to do anything else apart from having a few minutes to relax in front of the
TV before falling asleep in the sofa.
I once asked Celia to tell me what her secret was to be able to run a
house, work, spend time with her family and friends and also have spare
time to do certain activities which are typically not compatible with raising
three young children. She told me that she had help at home. What type
of help, I asked. She simply said: I have an au pair. She told me that
since she had her first au pair about 5 years ago, her life changed
completely and later she decided to set up her own au pair agency to
help other families to find suitable au pairs. Please read below to know
more about her story:
I always wondered why families, in general, found it so difficult to find an
appropriate au pair and why a large number of families had to replace
their au pairs after a relatively short period of time.
I found the answer when I learn about how the au pairs were typically
selected by the families. I noticed that there are two main ways of finding
an au pair: 1) to search online and 2) to use an au pair agency.
Finding an au pair online is typically quite straight forward. There are plenty
of internet sites where families can place an ad highlighting their
requirements and after a week, they have well over 100 applications of
potential candidates. Now, it takes some time to make a first screening,
then arrange an interview by phone or video conference with several
candidates and finally choose the right au pair.

This type of au pair selection works for many families, it is relatively cheap
and only requires having time to undertake the interviews and final
selection. However, in my view, it is not ideal as it is extremely difficult to
get to know a person after interviewing her/him in English, which is
typically a language that do not speak well, and therefore, it is not easy
to assess personality, background and motivation to come and work in a
foreign country.
The second approach to find an au pair is by using an agency to do the
work for the family. This is a very convenient approach but I realised that
most agencies in the UK depend on other agencies based abroad for
their au pair selection, without knowing the specific needs of each family.
Given that these two ways of finding an au pair were not in line with my
expectations and probably the main reason for the high number of failures
in selecting appropriate au pairs, I decided to create a different type of au
pair agency for those families that were finding the same challenges as
me. That is how aupairsfromspain.com has been created.
I was convinced that if I selected each au pair as if it were for my own
family, some people would enormously value this type of personalised
service. In addition, I thought that the best way to ensure a successful
placement is to get to know the hosting families very well before starting
the au pair selection process. I do not rely on third parties to select my au
pairs. I conduct the selection process having in mind the specific needs
of each family.
Why do I only focus on au pairs from Spain? Simply because I am Spanish
and, by interviewing au pairs in their mother tongue, I feel I can get to
know them better.
The fact that most of my hosting families contact me every time they need
a new au pair is extremely rewarding and makes me believe that I am
achieving my ultimate goal of exceeding my families expectations.

Tea Cosy is a welcome
addition in Shirley for tea
lovers. It has a quaint look
and the decorations are
very pretty. It reminded me
of some New England
establishments and I loved
the row of books on display.
It is situated in the Poppy
Parade, Wickham Road, by
Halfords, and one can sit
outside if one wishes.
I went with a friend and had
a carrot cake that was
scrumptious but the coffee
machine was being tried for
the first time so I will have to
go again to give a proper
opinion. I am not easy to
please regarding espresso
but I am aware it takes a
little time to get used to a
new machine.
Friends who went there for
lunch were not impressed
with their meals. They
complained there was not
much on their plates.
One might want to walk
there because there is no
parking. However, one can
leave the car in the
surrounding roads.

Giovanna, Marzia and Russell had a working dinner at the Shirley
Community Centre and decided to sample food from Red Chillies in
Broom Road as leaflets had just been distributed in the area. No sooner
had they stepped into the immaculate establishment that they were
informed that the take-away was under new management. Undeterred,
they proceeded to order.
The owner made them welcome and offered poppadom and relishes
whilst they were waiting for their dishes to be cooked.
Giovanna chose a mild curry dish and discovered Peshwari nan.
Marzia asked for a hot (not burning) vegetable Byriani dish and was truly
impressed with it. It was perfectly cooked and the vegetable curry tasted
authentic.
Russell commented: I enjoyed my vegetarian choice and would definitely
go back for another Indian meal again there soon.
Giovanna has already tried a second time and her husband, not overly
keen on Eastern delights, liked what he ordered.
Marzia and family went back too. Her husband said it was the best
Vindaloo curry he had had in years.
Consistency is an issue in many takeaways: many in Shirley have
deteriorated over the years and serve dishes that do not resemble Indian
food at all. We hope that Haldi will maintain its standards. The prices are
competive, the staff is friendly and proud to deliver good food. They also
have a special weekday offer, Monday to Thursday, of a starter, main and
side dishes for 9.95.

BONE HEALTH
Osteoporosis is a condition that makes bones
brittle and weak and more prone to break. In
women the menopause increases the risk of
osteoporosis so it makes sense to start looking after
your bones in your thirties before you become menopausal.
Osteoporosis can also be age-related and usually occurs in men and
women when they reach their seventies. Also, people with specific
conditions such as Coeliac disease (a severe allergy to gluten), eating
disorders, alcoholism or HIV maybe at risk.
Whatever your age, your medical history or your sex, it is never too
early or late to start looking after your bones. Here are a few tips to
ensure that your bones remain strong and healthy:
EAT CALCIUM RICH FOOD
A good dietary intake of calcium is essential to maintain bone density.
The average person needs approximately 700mg of the mineral per
day according to the NHS. However, the figures differ from country to
country and France and the USA set it at 1,000mg/day. Most of the
calcium goes toward renewing bone cells but calcium is also used in
regulating muscle contractions including the heartbeat, to ensure that
blood clots normally and for healthy nerve function. They are many
ways to get calcium from dairy products to tinned sardines and
broccoli. I recently found that some mineral waters are one the biggest
provider of the mineral. Just by drinking a litre of French mineral waters
Courmayeur or Hepar you can get over half the RDA (recommended
daily allowance). I have managed to source both waters from a
company called www.frenchclick.co.uk.
Listed below are the top 10 foods highest in calcium:

Cheddar cheese 730mg/100gr

Can you overdo it with the calcium? According to the NHS website
dosage of over 1,500mg per day could lead to stomach pain and
diarrhoea. However, if you suffer from specific conditions where
malabsorption of minerals and vitamins is an issue, it is recommended
that you take double the RDA amount.
THE VITAMIN D FACTOR
Vitamin D is essential for calcium to be absorbed from the digestive
tract and plays a role in protecting your bones. Deficiency in the vitamin
can lead to softening and weakening of the bones. Your skin makes
vitamin D from the ultra violet light in the sunlight, it is then stored in the
body ready for later use. Therefore the easiest way to get vitamin D is
to be in the sun without any sunscreen which would block the process.
Exposing the unprotected skin of your arms and legs to the sun for
ten to fifteen minutes during summer months should be enough. Be
mindful not to burn and take advantage of the early morning rays or
late afternoon sun. If the sun is not always available then eggs and oily
fish such as salmon, trout and sardines are also a good source.
Most people should be able to get the daily recommended amount of
vitamin D from their food or summer sun and therefore supplements
are not essential. It is advised to take no more than 25 micrograms if
taken as a supplement. You skin will never produce too much of the
vitamin so you should not have any concerns about overdosing on it
from skin exposure.
HEALTHY DIGESTION & ABSORPTION
Eating calcium packed food is great but so is a healthy digestion to
enable the absorption of the vitamins and minerals provided by your
diet. For healthy digestion, Ayurveda recommends drinking ginger tea
before main meals to stimulate digestion. Also use spices in your food
that facilitate the digestive processes such as cumin, coriander, fennel,
turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. Avoid bad food combination that upset
the digestion such as mixing fruits with other food fruits should
always be eaten on their own and never with dairy products.
REDUCE VATA
In Ayurveda, the natural energy Vata which is made from air and space
governs the bones. Excess
Vata causes stress and also
makes the bones porous,
weak and brittle. Keeping
Vata in balance is therefore
essential. To reduce Vata in
your life concentrate on
reducing your stress levels
and eating food that keeps
Vata in check such as warm,
soupy, well cooked food. Eat
and sleep at regular times
and make time for relaxation.
Treat yourself to a weekly
massage to keep stress at
bay.
BONE FIT
Bones get stronger with use and the best way to strengthen them is
to do weight bearing exercises such as brisk walking, yoga and weight
training. Aim to do at least three to five moderate sessions a week
(forty-five minutes to one hour each) and vary the sports to get
maximum benefit out of it. If you are new to exercise take it easy and
build it up. If you are already suffering from osteoporosis, it might not
be safe to do high-impact exercises. Please check with your doctor
which exercises are safe for you to perform.

The Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign screening of

A Sunday in the Country on Saturday 15 June saw a
record attendance of 105. A few in the audience had
difficulty reading the subtitles due to heads in front of them
blocking their view of the bottom of the screen. We will ask
taller people to sit closer to the back or on the edges! Also,
not all could sample Jill's wonderful French-style pastries
during the interval. The attendance was higher than
expected or, perhaps, they looked too tempting!
You can hold your parties at the Centre on Saturdays and
Sundays. Contact the Site Manager, NOG, on 020 8777
4298 from Monday to Friday from 9 to 11am or Friday
afternoon. He will be happy to show you around.
The Centre is available for hire during the morning and
early afternoon. We are slowly populating the day slots:
please consider meeting at the Centre for your group or
association.
SCCA will organize fundraising activities during the
summer. There will be a sale of pre-loved items: you will
be able to hire a table for 10 and bring all your goods (no
electrical items, please) to the Centre. Your house will be
decluttered and you might make a tidy sum of money.

Hello All
I wanted to let a wider audience know about our progress with the
lawyers.
Shasha, Dave, Stuart Collins (Croydon Labour councillor) and I met with
Sue Willman and Charlie Dobson last Thursday in London. Sue and
Charlie are from Deighton Pierce Glynn solicitors and have previously
met with Taus Larsen and Jonathan Essex (with me on speaker phone).
We agreed to proceed with taking advice from a Barrister at a capped
cost of 2,000. I deposited 1,500 with the solicitors on Monday so
that they would instruct Justine Thornton to begin work.
We need to raise 800.00 to cover the immediate shortfall that our funds
did not have to allow this process to begin and a further 500.00 that is
due to be paid in around 2 weeks time! (Gordon, this is where your kind
offer of cash may well be much appreciated!). Although I have paid the
800.00 balance (to be repaid!), I am not able to pay the further 500.00.
If we are advised that there is a good chance of winning a Judicial
Review, the total costs will be in the region of 33,000 - which includes
around 6,000 of VAT. My personal belief is that we would not be able
to raise this kind of money - but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
Our hope is that if Justine finds good cause for a Judicial Review; we can
then write to Boris and (maybe) the threat of legal action with a Barristers
instruction will be sufficient to make him be on the side of caution and
reject the application. We have 3 months from the time that the decision
is made to lodge a Judicial Review.
We could, if our fundraising fails to raise sufficient funds, request 50% of
the pledges that have been made. We (STI) have a fundraiser organised
for Friday 28 June at the Green Dragon starting at 19:30. Croydon
Labour party have a fundraiser planned for July 12 which I believe will be
a meal - details to follow. Could any other groups organise
fundraising events or do you have any money to donate?
Finally, if you have any signed Boris letters please get them to me or
Charlotte as we delivering to City Hall now.

the country will equally celebrate the birth of their heir, expected in July

Summer Reading Challenge
This is our free reading scheme for children and teenagers which runs for six weeks
from Monday 29th July to Saturday 7th September. The theme is Creepy House and
children will receive rewards along the way for the books they read. Therell also be
lots of other activities and events linked to the Creepy House theme for children,
teenagers and families to enjoy.

Rhymetime: 10am on the following Fridays: 5, 12, 19 and 26
Once upon a Rhyme: 10am on the following Saturdays: 6 and 20

Chatterbooks is a reading group for children aged 8-11 years old. Just like the Teen
Reading Group it meets once a month and its a chance to discuss all things book
related whilst playing some fun games and quizzes. Friday 19 from 4 to 5pm
Teen Reading Group: This group meets once a month to read and discuss books,
recommend books to each other, choose new books for the library and do lots of
other book related activities such as quizzes and games or any other activities that
the members suggest. Thursday 25 from 4.30 to 5.30pm
Board games: Do you like playing Scrabble, Monopoly, cards, chess and Battleship?
We have a selection of games which can be used in the library any time. Just ask
a member of staff.
Monthly Craft Workshop: Card Making on Tuesday 9 from 2.30 to 4.30pm.
Stitch, Knit and Natter from 2.30 to 4.30pm Friday 12 and 26
Work Club on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12 noon. The Work Club is here to offer
support with job search, help with typing CVs, help filling in application forms and
there is access to the internet and email. No appointment is needed, just drop in.
Computer sessions for beginners: Learn to set up an email account, use Facebook,
do online shopping, use Word, Excel and Powerpoint or improve your typing skills.
These sessions are offered on Mondays and Tuesdays in the morning and afternoon
and on Saturday mornings. Please contact the library for further details.

Green Thumb: Chapter 2
One is reasonably pleased with the colour and the texture of the lawn
but the weeds have grown too. The first treatment was the Early
Summer Treatment in
conjunction with Water
Conserver on 28 May.
For the EST they applied a
coated mini granular feed
and selective herbicide for
weed control. For the WC
(CH) they applied their Oasis
Treatment Programme that
will help the lawn to make
the best use of any available
water.
The third treatment was
Slowmow on 14 June.
They applied the plant
growth regulator that
affects the grass plant in a
variety of different ways.
One was told not to cut the
lawn for 3 days.
The strange weather is not
helping matters.
One will keep the readers
informed about the progress of the treatment.

The Bridle Road
pedestrian crossing is
well used but traffic is
not flowing any better.
The arrows in the
middle of the junction
are totally ignored and
traffic from Monks
Orchard Road turns
right as if they did not
exist. It is scary.
A new big sign has
now appeared in
Wickham Road:
Shrublands is on it and so is Beckenham but West Wickham is not. It
is rather ridiculous. Who designed it?
The arrow for the Neighbouring Recycling Centre seems to have a life
of its own as if it were beyond or on the left in the slip road. The slip road
is dangerous with a bus stand on the left and the Recycling Centre on
the right. Traffic
speeds through the
middle. Bigger vans or
lorries cannot go
through when a bus
and a car are parked.
I have spotted a few
residents taking lots of
pictures and hear that
many going to West
Wickham prefer to go
via Oak Avenue in
order to avoid the
junction.

The plant that could cost you your home!!!
It was even in the Evening Standard and the word is spreading:
Japanese knotweed is cause for concern for all homeowners
Japanese knotweed
looks like lots of
other weeds to the
untrained eye, but it
has the power to
ruin your home and
cost you thousands
of pounds. It can
grow 10cms a day
and takes over
everything.
A family in Herts
were told a couple of
years ago that their
300,000 four-bed home needed to be demolished in order to treat the
scourge of Japanese knotweed that had penetrated their walls. The
plant had spread from waste ground near the newly-built property and
quickly advanced the length of the garden to enter their home through
walls and skirting boards. Surveyors told them that the value of the
property had dropped to just 50,000, and that the only way to
effectively remove the scourge was to knock the house down, treat the
plant and then rebuild.
Another home seller saw his deal fall through within weeks of exchange
because a tiny 3cm piece of Japanese knotweed had been found in his
garden. His buyers lender panicked and refused to lend the money.
If you are trying to sell your home and you discover Japanese knotweed
in your garden, it is likely to cause you problems. Some buyers wont
touch a house if they know this plant is in the garden, or even
neighbouring gardens.
A few years ago, John Burlton, a Shirley resident tried to alert people
about this problem. The Council did not lend an ear and other residents
were not interested. There is knotweed in our area. One is warned.
