Mystery Bags
Introduction:
Teacher will:

Lead a discussion about counting the blocks in a bag and recording that number. (Note - Students may need to place the single blocks on a number line in order to know how to write a number between 10 and 20.) H Show how to pack the blocks, how to record the number of blocks-of-10 and leftover single blocks, and how to make a recording of the blocks when packed as much as possible. H Assign partners to work together with the materials and to record on one activity sheet.
H

Activity:
Students will:

Write the letter name of their bag on their activity sheet. Take the blocks out of their bag and count them one by one. Record that number. H Pack a block-of-10 and some ones. H Use Digi stamps or Digi colored markers, to represent their blocks-of-10 and single blocks.
H H

Whole Class Discussion:

Teachers will:

Conduct a discussion with the class about the two processes that they used to determine the number of blocks in the bag. Students may notice that these processes gave them the same final answer. H Have students compare notes by discussing how many blocks were in each bag.
H

Assessment:
Are students able to count the blocks one-by-one and record the number? H Are students able to pack and record the number as blocks-of-10 and some single blocks? H Are students able to accurately represent the quantity by drawing or stamping? H Do students notice that these two processes (counting and packing) give them the same final answer?
H

Extension Ideas:
Have students repeat this activity with 20 - 100 blocks. H When students are ready, include blocks-of-10 along with single blocks in the mystery bags. A second activity sheet is provided. H Have students put their own amounts in the mystery bags and challenge their partners.
