she never had any technical training and never learned how to read music, Holiday quickly became an active participant in the most vibrant jazz scene in the United States. At the age of 18 after having gained more experience than most adult musicians, Holiday was spotted by John Hammond and cut her first record as part of a group led by Benny Goodman, himself on the verge of public prominence. In 1935 Holidays career got a big push when she recorded four sides that went on to become hits, including What a Little Moonlight Can Do and Miss Brown to You. This landed her a contract of her own and she recorded a number of master tracks that would ultimately become an important building block of early American jazz music. In 1938, she became one of the very first black women to work with a white orchestra, an impressive accomplishment of her time. In 1939 Holiday was introduced to the poem Strange Fruit, an emotional piece about the lynching of a black man. Holiday recorded the song which eventually became one of her classics. It was the success of Strange Fruit that prompted Lady Day to to make more of her signature, moving ballads. Despite her lack of technical training, Holidays unique diction, phrasing and dramatic intensity made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. Singing songs like the The Man I Love or Porgy is no more work than sitting down and eating Chinese roast duck, and I love roast duck, she wrote in her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues in 1956. Today many of her songs are as well known today as they were decades ago and she is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time. Viktor Lazlo, a French-Belgian performer of Grenadian and Martiniquan descent, is one performer who has embraced Holidays legend. She not only honors Holiday singing her songs on stage at the Theatre Rive Gauche (until 2 June) but she has also writen a novel inspired by the tumuluous life of her heroine. The novel, My name is Billie Holiday, just published in French by Albin Michel, was liberally inspired by Holidays life. It is a subtle story where the voices and lives of women are marked by their solitude.

Et si le plus important tait, non pas de dsigner les plus beaux endroits au monde, mais ceux que vous vous fliciterez de ne pas avoir vus ? Cest ce que pense Catherine Price, journaliste au New York Times, et grande voyageuse, qui a dcid, elle, de faire le tour du monde du pire. Elle en a rapport les 101 lieux ne pas voir avant de mourir. Contrepied humoristique, ce guide lenvers vous invite donc ne pas voir le festival du Testicule dans le Montana, au milieu dune foule en liesse. Ni assister (et encore moins participer) au lancer dune roue de fromage du haut dune colline particulirement pentue en Angleterre pendant que des centaines de personnes se jettent (au sens propre) sa poursuite. The building was originally built for funeral purposes by the diocese in 1873. Baltard, then director of the architectural work of the City of Paris, oversaw the project. In less than three years a vast building was constructed mixing iron, brick and stone. It was covered by a massive canopy characteristic of the industrial architecture of the nineteenth century. The press of the time called it a factory of mourning. It set the new standard for burial, at a time when hygiene was of growing conern. Everything was centralized in this building, operations (workshops, warehouses, stables); the presentation of the body (reception and quiet rooms) and even workers lodgings. In 1905, as part of the separation of church and state, the municipal funeral service was created. The municipal service was viewed as a progression of republican ideas as it allowed everyone to have a dignified funeral ceremony, regardless of their religion, their status (divorced women previously had to be buried at night) or the circumstances of death (suicides had also been banned by the church from having funerals). The municipal monopoly covered coffins, hearses, pall-bearers and cemeteries. As times changed so did funerals. Motor vehicles replaced horse-drawn vehicles. With the end of carriages, tradesmen on the site also evolved: the coachmen became chauffeurs, grooms became pall-bearers, farriers did body work, ... A machine shop was built in place of the old stables. Hearses were custom made and garaged on the site. For most of the century the municipal funeral service retained the monopoly on burials. During the years of full operation, 27 000 hearses left the garages each year, 1,400 people worked there, including some forty women.1993, the law Sueur gave greater freedom to families to choose funeral services. At Rue dAubervilliers, the activity gradually declined until it was closed completely in 1997. In 1995, the facades and canopies had been registered into the inventory of historical m o n u m e n t s . A f t e r t e n years of planning the site was renovated. In 2008 the newly baptized Centquatre opened as an exhibition hall and innovative cultural center where the public now enjoys theater, dance, music, film, video, as well as culinary, visual, digital and urban arts. I started a food blog in September of 2003 as a creative outlet, to share my passion for food and cooking. It quickly gained momentum and generated unexpected opportunities, allowing me to quit my job as a software engineer and become a full-time food writer. What is particular about your books ? My goal, with the blog as with my books, is to inspire and teach. I try to provide my readers with ideas and stories that make them want to run into the kitchen and cook, and once theyre there I strive to give them all the tips and tools they need to succeed. Are they published in both French and English? Ive written all my books in English, and had the opportunity to publish my first cookbook in French as well. Im hoping well find a similar arrangement for my upcoming vegetable cookbook. What is the most satisfying thing about being a writer/ chef ? What I love about my job is the great variety of topics I get to explore, people I get to meet, places I get to go, and foods I get to taste. I also love that I am constantly learning new things and developing new skills. how do you select/invent the recipes you publish? My cooking inspiration seems to come from everywhere and everything: books, websites, restaurants, market stalls, discussions with friends, travels, and also sheer necessity when Im standing in front of the open fridge and trying to come up with a dish to use whats on hand. What did/do you parents do ? Both my parents are retired engineers. My mother now runs a sewing blog (coupecouture. fr) and my father has started a new career as a translator -- of science fiction novels, mostly. What is your chief characteristic ? I think of myself as a happy, positive, optimistic person. Your motto Only you can make you happy, which is a song by Au Revoir Simone. I also like the French saying A chaque jour suffit sa peine, which helps when I feel overwhelmed. Favorite color ? Purple Favorite ower ?
