FOREWORD
The booklet Growth of Electricity Sector in India published annually by Central Electricity Authority in partial fulfillment of its obligation under the Electricity Act, 2003. It provides glimpses of growth of the Indian Power Sector over the years
and contains the relevant information and statistics in the form of graphs, pie-charts, maps and tables.
The input data for this compilation has been provided by various utilities and non -utilities. The vital information and
data contained in this handy booklet will be of immense interest to the public in general and stakeholders in particular. The important statistics like per capita electricity consumption, percentage share of different categories of consumption, transmission
and distribution losses, etc., have been compared with international data with respect to some of the developed and developing nations. I hope this booklet will prove to be helpful to all those who are associated in the rapid and sustained development
of the Indian Electricity Sector.

PREFACE

The Power Sector in India has made rapid strides during the last six decades in the field of generation, transmission,
distribution and utilization of electricity. The installed generating capacity in the country in 1947 was meagre 1362 MW which
catered to power requirements of urban centres and adjoining areas with electrification of around 1500 Villages. The power
generating capacity in the country has since grown manifold to 173626 MW at the end of March 2011. Village electrification
covers 537947 villages representing 90.6% of the total villages in the country and pump sets energisation accounts for 85.5%
of the potential. The Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana, aimed at providing access to electricity to all the villages in a
time bound manner is under implementation. The programmes have to been introduced to improve the energy conservation
and reduction in the AT & C losses. CEA has made significant contribution in the development of power sector in various specific
areas such as introduction of new technologies, generation and transmission planning , design and engineering of projects,
techno-economic appraisal of the projects, monitoring the performance of the existing schemes in operation, construction,
etc.

The booklet on Growth of the Electricity in India from 1947 to 2011 has been brought out by Data Management & Load
Forecasting (DMLF) Division of CEA. It contains vital statistics on the growth of installed generating capacity, electrical energy
generation, transmission and distribution network pattern of electricity consumption etc. The information on the growth has
been presented in the form of graphs, maps, tables and pie-charts. The state-wise generating capacity has been presented on
map as well. The details like sector wise growth of Generation Capacity, Energy Generation & Trend of category-wise consumption have been compiled and included in this publication.

It is hoped that the booklet would provide useful information to all the stakeholders.
