HEARTLINES is an organisation which helps people to talk, think and ACT on good values.We make films, books, and TV programmes, and use SMS and the Internet to get people to do things which will be good for themselves, for others and for South Africa as a whole. HEARTLINES promotes good values values such as compassion, responsibility, perseverance, selfless love, honesty, and above all, having the COURAGE to put these values into ACTION.

Why?
HEARTLINES believes that most people share good values, but they dont always ACT as if they believe in them. If we all acted on our good values, we would be able to tackle problems such as HIV/AIDS, gender violence, xenophobia, racism and bullying. HEARTLINES supports the ONE-LOVE campaign, which encourages people to live out values such as honesty and faithfulness in relationships, and stick to one sexual partner, so as to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Stories that Talk: Short Plays for Primary Schools takes popular stories from Stories that Talk, the compilation of southern-African values-based stories, and turns them into plays that can be performed in assemblies, in the classroom, in faith-based settings, and in other group activities with children. Adapted for use as drama scripts by well-known actor and director, Jerry Mofokeng, the stories lend themselves to easy-to-produce, short plays with a strong values message. The plays are translated into everyday Afrikaans, Sesotho and isiZulu language, and can be used in both mother-tongue and second-language environments. 1

THE

MAGIC OF THE ARTS

Allow me to liken us as dramatists to magicians. We are able to transport our audiences to the world of make-believe and give them an unforgettable experience for the duration of the play. The hall that you walked into becomes the jungle somewhere in Africa. The child you transported to school becomes a villain. Everyday language is transformed into unforgettable dialogue. The beauty also lies in the audience discussions afterwards where they express opinions and feelings about the characters and the situations they saw on stage. It is this magic that we hope these dramas will assist you to create.

THE POWER

OF

CHILDRENS IMAGINATIONS

One of the most beautiful assets to use in the cast and in the audience is childrens ability to imagine. We have seen how children who are complete strangers, if left to themselves, are able to create a world, a reality, between themselves that they inhabit and explore. As teachers we have that asset available to us. The challenge and the opportunity for us is to tap into that quality. Suggestions and questions such as what if ... or imagine that suddenly open the door for you. I think it will be to your advantage to go through an entire rehearsal without once telling the children do this or dont do that. Even prefacing the next suggestion with I think ... makes a difference and gives the child comfort that they are participants in the making of the product. The discipline of imagining as a teacher unlocks your creativity and effectively taps into the magical world of childrens imagination.

THE TEACHER AS THE DRAMATIST


It is to your advantage if you have experience in theatre-crafts. However, there is no expectation that you must have this knowledge to make these plays work. Here is how we see your role in the school environment: When a script has already been written, there are two people who work on it to interpret the writers intent and give it life on stage the Dramaturg and the Director.

The Dramaturg is basically the literary mediator between the writer and the director. Their task is to be an advocate for the writer and to see to it that the director does justice to the script. The director is an interpretive artist. Their task is to paint a picture of the script in their mind and to inject that picture into the actors. They create the magic by fusing all the elements into the magic of theatre. The teacher wears both these hats. But Id like to explain the teachers role in a slightly different manner. The teacher - working with learners and not actors, working in a classroom and not a theatre, working alone and not with designers and choreographers thus works differently from the director and the dramaturg - even though they borrow some of the techniques from these roles. The teacher is: A Facilitator: Their task is to act as a catalyst - they are participating outsiders in the process. They provide processes that assist the children to realize their roles in the play. One way of doing this is in asking questions rather than dictating things. The teacher is the childrens partner and not their boss. Everyone looks forward to the rehearsal and asks themselves: I wonder what the teacher has got up their sleeve today its such fun working with them. This is the part that takes full advantage of the childrens imagination and takes them to imaginary worlds that adults sometimes struggle to journey to. An Enabler: I often say to young people who work with me no-one is allowed to say I cannot in our rehearsal room. It is okay to acknowledge that you have never done what I am asking you to do, that you feel a little intimidated and so on, but you are going to try and you are going to do it the best way that You can - no holding back and no judging yourself . So much of what happens in rehearsal and performance is about confidence before it is about skill. We therefore need to get confidence right first and then technique or skill. Allow me to call you a master-puppeteer who creates magic through the children. As an enabler you provide the children with tricks that help them to do justice to their characters and to the play as a whole. You put one in a costume, stimulate their imagination and suddenly they act differently - you have given them a license to do so. You take a coloured lipstick and paint a girls cheeks and they are immediately transformed.

You take five narrators and ask each one to choose a breed of dog that they like. You then ask each one how their dog barks. They then say their speech as that dog would if it could speak. Suddenly you have variety in the narrators. So, you dont impose things on the children but you draw it out of them. When they own it, they will do justice to the character and they will deliver the dialogue in a special way, instead of just reciting it.

THE SET THE WORLD

OF THE PLAY

Simply stated stay simple. Use what you have and stop stressing and moaning about what you dont have. There might be a parent in the school or an artist in the community who might create magic for you in designing a set or a backdrop. If not, use things that suggest the world of the play and the audience will fill in the gaps. A steering wheel is the whole vehicle if you create and believe that illusion. Different carpets on the floor are different rooms to the audience. If you create a world for us as the audience and you are consistent with that world from the beginning to the end it becomes our reality and we will travel the journey with you.

IMAGINE
Let me challenge you to do your best to Imagine from your very first reading of these scripts. I think you will find it more exciting to create what you see in your mind through the childrens imagination.

HORNS ONLY!
This is a story written by Gcina Mhlophe, Fathima Dada and Leoni Hofmeyr. In this story, the animals with horns have been excluding animals without horns from their parties.Through the story, they learn that accepting differences is a good thing and that being included should not depend on what you look like. This is a simple drama that can be used with younger children. You can make the cast as big as or as small as you like, by adding in or taking out animal roles. Feel free to add in additional speaking parts as you need for your group. English

Characters:
Zebra Monkey Rhino Narrators A girl who can dance well. She is wearing a striped top. You would probably cast the class clown for this role. Also a very good dancer. This one is the bouncer-type. They depend on their strength to bully others but they are not smart intellectually. These are the storytellers. What helps is to have learners of different vocal qualities. The juxtaposition helps to give even the slow speaker a sense of individuality. Just like the narrators the strength of these characters lies in their individuality. Even someone with a stutter can be accommodated.

Animals

There is music playing, preferably music that requires a couple or a dance pair. Whilst the music plays Zebra and Monkey appear already dancing. The narrator speaks whilst the music and dance continues. Narrator 1 Welcome to the kingdom of the horns. This is a great kingdom where everyone is welcome everyone who has horns. You have your democracy. We have ours.

Narrator 2

Behind us are Zebra and Monkey. They are best friends. They eat together.They sing together. They dance together. I am sure that if they went to a dance competition like So you think you can dance they would be number 1. One day they saw other animals going to a party. It was going to be a great party. The celebrities and the TV cameras were going to be there. It was the party of the year.

Music plays. The other animals come through. It is like walking on the red carpet at a big awards ceremony. The cameras are there. Zebra and Monkey try to get the attention of the VIPs. Zebra Rhino Monkey Rhino Zebra Monkey Zebra Monkey Zebra Monkey Zebra Monkey Zebra Monkey Excuse me sir! May we pleaaaase come in? Hey. Go away.Where is your invitation? Sorry sir we dont mind standing at the back. And where are your horns? Hm? Where? (No answer) Now get out of my way. (Proudly walks past). (Disappointed) Why were we born without horns? Why? (Suddenly brightening up) I have an idea! (Skeptical) Idea? Yes. Lets make our own horns You are crazy No, I am not. We can use sticks and plants. Excuse me!!!!! Come-on Zee, lets give it a try. (Resigns) Okay (Pulling Zebra out) Thats my friend.

The party music gets louder. The animals get into a big circle to dance. Monkey and Zebra come in rather hesitantly, their home-made horns on their heads. They slowly warm up to the spirit of the party. Before long there is a circle around them as they steal the limelight. In the process their horns fall off. The music comes to a sudden halt. Animal 1 Animal 2 Animal 3 Who gave these gatecrashers permission to come in here? Who let you in here? Yes. Where are their horns?

You think you can come in here with fake horns? Where is security? (Shouting) Security!!!!! English

Security comes in, mishandles Zebra and Monkey and they push them out. Animal 7 Okay everyone my apologies for the inconvenience. (Shouts) Music!!!!!!

The music comes back on. The animals try to dance but the fun is all gone. Eventually everyone is just standing and talking in groups. Some are even sleepy.The music gets softer. Animal 8 Animal 9 Animal 8 Animal 9 Animal 8 Animal 9 Animal 10 Animal 11 Guys, this party is booooring. Lets go sweetheart. No, please dont go. Should we change the music? No, the music is fine. Its the company I have problems with. I think we should call Zebra and Monkey back What? I mean we were not nice to them. Actually, why must they have horns anyway? Sure.Why? (Other animals echo the question:Yes, why. / Ja, why? Actually it does not make sense. / No sense at all / But why did we do it? You see, it does not make sense. Etc) (Shouting) Alright everybody time to do the right thing!!!! MUSIC!!!! Host disappears and reappears with Zebra and Monkey.They immediately take the floor and everyone applauds them and encourages them. Host (To the audience) By the way, you are also welcome to dance with us. No-one cares about horns anymore.

CAN LITTLE PIG FLY?


This drama will encourage your children to keep hoping and not give up. Perseverance, or not giving up, is part of hope.The story of Little Pig can help your children to learn to try and try again, in order to achieve what they hope for. It is a delightful story which can be used with younger children. Feel free to adapt the parts to suit the number of children in your group. If you have fewer children, you could easily combine some of the narrator parts.

Characters:
Narrators Narrators are storytellers. They have an opportunity to highlight their individuality even as they enjoy themselves telling the story. It helps to cast children who have different qualities physically and vocally. A clumsy-looking character who is wearing torn clothing. We need to see the character as someone who cannot achieve anything so that we can celebrate when they succeed. Pig has a squeaky voice that is possibly irritating to listen to. A physically large character with slow movements and a deep voice. Physically very tiny and able to run around easily. Speaks with a staccato quality. A child with a speech disorder would do this one quite well. The brightest shade facially. Goat has some springbok-leaps to his movement. As with narrators what is key is individuality in relation to the other animals. The dialogue can also be used to select the characters.

A pianist starts playing music. A NARRATOR rushes onto the stage. English Narrator 1 Ladies and gentlemen, fellow learners and everyone present here today. Allow me and my team to tell you a story - a story of hope. A story of a little pig that would not give up even though everyone around him did not give him a chance. Oh - here he comes. Enjoy... Music changes and PIG comes walking onto the stage. Pig is in a hurry wearing some overalls, work shoes and gloves to indicate hard work. Pig Hello? Hello? Is anyone awake? No one answers. When he disappears the other animals sneak onto the stage and laugh at Pig. Pig starts shouting again and the rest of the animals fall to the ground and pretend to be sleeping. Pig Hello? Hello? Well, I have things to do (Exits again). All the other animals get up with some giggles and comments: Old Goat Animal 1 Animal 2 Animal 3 Animal 4 Thank goodness hes gone. Its too early for his nonsense. Piggy-piggy-piggy!!! Who does he think he is? It is really too early ... He is crazy this one

They all stand on the fringe of the stage so that we believe they can see Pig but he cannot see them. Pig is humming to the music and now frantically collecting feathers from side-stage. Cow steps forward. Cow Pig Cow Pig Cow Pig What are you doing? Im trying to climb up onto the roof. Ive made some wings you see, and Im hoping to fly. You? Fly? Yes. Could you help and pass me those feathers? (Skeptical) No, this sounds like a very bad plan. But it might work

Cow Hen Old Goat

(Emphatic) I dont want anything to do with it. Hey piggy youll hurt yourself! And you are making a mess here!

Pig collects the feathers and disappears. The others move to the front of the stage and observe Pig as though climbing onto the roof at the back of the auditorium. Narrator 2 Narrator 3 Narrator 2 Narrator 3 Narrator 2 Narrator 3 Narrator 2 Little Pig took no notice of them and went on trying to drag his wings up onto the roof. He managed He strapped the wings on ... He flapped them once Twice Three times He stood up on his back legs, ran and JUMPED off the roof.

All the animals look in horror and close their eyes. They slowly look again to see what has happened. Narrator 4 Narrator 5 Narrator 4 Pig Cow Hen Old goat Narrator 6 Narrator 7 (Sympathetic) Crash! Little Pig landed on the ground with a big bump. He stood up, shook his head, wiggled his legs and found that nothing was broken. But his wings were lying on the ground all in pieces. (Entering) Oh well, Ill have to make another plan (Disappears to the other side of the stage). I knew it was a stupid plan. I told him he would get hurt. Tell me now Who is going to pick up those feathers? Later in the day the animals watched as little pig found a packet and dragged it up to the roof. He asked the other animals to help him get his front legs into the handles.

The other animals are now watching the same place at the back of the auditorium to observe Pigs efforts. Cow Hen Old Goat Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Narrator 8 Sorry I cant help you. Im busy. No, not me! Too dangerous! Dont look at me. This is just too crazy for my liking. Eventually Little Pig got his front legs into the packet. Once again he ran, and JUMPED off the roof WHOOSH! The wind caught the packet behind him. Then ... CRASH!!! (Shock among the animals). He landed on his snout. It hurt a lot ... and he began to cry. English

Pig walks onto the stage sobbing. Cow Pig Hen (Irritated) Its no use crying. I told you this was a silly idea. But you didnt want to listen. Im not crying.This bump on my snout is just making my eyes water. Dont pretend it is not painful. We can all see that you are hurt. Pig sits down. He is very sad. The animals look at him, at each other, at him and begin to shrug their shoulders and indicate to each other to do something. Hen Cow Old Goat Hen Pig Animals Narrator 9 Pig ... Im sorry we didnt help you. Please dont give up. Yes,You must always have hope, Little Pig. Life without hope is very ... empty, and sad And boring So if you really, really want to fly, we will help you. (Feeling encouraged) Really? Will you help me? Yes we will ... Absolutely ... Count me in ... Most definitely (They all hug Little Pig) Suddenly all the animals had ideas about how to help Little Pig. They rushed around the farm collecting all the things they needed.

There is a lot of activity on and off the stage. There is shouting from everywhere. There is a united effort in all they do. Animal 1 Animal 2 Animal 3 Animal 4 Animal 1 Animal 2 Animal 3 Where are those guinea fowl feathers? I will get some more Hey, please bring those branches And that packet too please No-no, find a bigger packet Its all coming together guys Yippee!!!

All the animals go downstage to watch Little Pigs effort. They are anxious this time they want it to work. The narrators speak in an animated manner. Narrator 4 Narrator 5 Narrator 6 Narrator 7 Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Animals There was a sound like thunder. It got louder and louder Suddenly ... over the hill came the cow Running as fast as she could And holding tightly onto her horns With beautiful wings streaming out behind him was ... (With excitement) Little Pig! Yeahhhhhh! Go pig go ... youre flying at last ...

Little Pig enters from side-stage. They hug and congratulate him. They all applaud and exit singing and dancing. (The pianist plays beyond their exit).

THE PARTY IT PAYS TO WAIT


This is a story written by Gcina Mhlophe that was inspired by her own childhood.The story of Madoda shows us that waiting for something we really want is not easy, but that it is worth it in the end.This is the value of self-control. You will need a few strong characters for the main parts of the story.The rest of the cast can be increased or decreased by including more or fewer people at the party. English

Characters:
Madoda Lunga This is one young man who loves his food. He has no patience at all. When he wants a thing he wants it now. He is a bit overweight. This is Madodas sensible cousin. Physically tiny but healthy. His voice is different to Madodas so that we have variety when they talk. He is patient and loving. She is a well of wisdom. Her speech is slow and she walks in a dignified manner. Her hair is grey. She has a good face and a dignified body. Her voice is mature compared to the children. Her clothes reflect her nationality. He is in his 40s. Often in his overalls because of his occupation or trade. He is a friendly man.

Gogo Mother Father

Cast members Just like the narrators these are different from each other in order to give us a variety of personalities. Some are energetic. Some are lazy.

Lunga and Madoda are playing a popular local ball game. They are having great fun. They chase the ball off-stage. Narrator 1 Hi! This is our town and those two boys are Lunga and Madoda. They are cousins. Every day after school they race home to see who is the fastest.

Lunga and Madoda reappear, running. Madoda trails behind and gives up Madoda Lunga Narrator 2 Grandmother Lunga, I am soooo hungry. Please give me something from your lunch-box. (Laughing) Haai suka wena Madoda. You are always hungry. (He continues to laugh and exits. Madoda follows disappointed.) One day our family got a letter from Grandmother who lived in Kimberley. (Opens the letter and looks at it). (Positioned on the other side of the stage) To my children and my grandchildren Hallo and how are you? I am happy to tell you that I am going to visit you all to celebrate my sixtieth birthday. I look forward to celebrating this special day with all of you. Your loving grandmother. Maria. The boys were very excited.

Lunga and Madoda reappear happy, dancing, singing Madoda Lunga Madoda Lunga Madoda Lunga Madoda Lunga I am going to drink castor oil and make sure I am very hungry on that day. Close your eyes Madoda. Why? Please man. You will see why later on. Okay. (Lunga takes a deep breath to prepare for the magical moment. Madoda closes his eyes and then opens one slightly) No Man stop cheating! Sorry. Sorry. Please do it quickly. (Speaking like a magician) Can you see it all laid out on a big table? Imagine the sweets... the jellies ... and the cake... Imagine the cake. Madoda. Hmmmmmm!!! It has strawberries on top and on the sides. Hmmmmmmmmmmm! (Starts licking his lips).

And then ... and then they cut a biiiiiiiiig slice and put it on your plate (Jumping) Yes ...Yes...Yes...Yes You are spoiling it Man! I said imagine But I can already taste it. Oh I forgot Mr. Hurry. They freeze on stage English

The next week there was a shopping trip to town. The boys went with mother to help her carry the groceries. (They follow her) Mama, can we pleaaaaase have some sweets? No! You must wait for the party.You will spoil the party if you eat the sweets now. Just one, ple-e-ease! Cmon man! Mama said no. Madoda, how many times must I teach you to wait? Hm? Sorry ma. Waiting has never killed anybody my boy. Now, lets hurry up before the supermarket gets full. (They all exit. Lunga pinches Madodas bum as they leave). The father was given the job of going to order the birthday cake from town. Remember that bakery that has these colourful cakes? That one that has cakes with peaches and strawberries on top? Everybody wanted a big slice, so the father had to order the biggest one in the store. Excuse me my girl; please remind the baker that there must be sixty candles on the cake. My mothers favourite colour is red. (To himself) I hope the old girl still has enough air to blow them out!!! Friday came, and we were all very busy.

The stage is full. Everyone is busy with something towards making the birthday a success. Some of the dialogue is improvised. Cast 1 Can I have more carrots please? These will not be enough for all the people. Mama, I cant find the baking powder.

Girls! I asked you to clean the windows. Use paper, not cloth. Madoda, no tasting. We are watching you. I am going to borrow the red carpet from the church. Im sure they wont mind. Everybody; please excuse me I am going to type the programme. If you dont mind, I want to be the MC. Any suggestions? At the end of the day we were all tired; but everything was ready. I could not sleep that night. I dont think anyone slept.

The narrators delivery is like that of sales people. Narrator 6 Narrator 5 Narrator 6 Narrator 5 Narrator 6 Narrator 5 Narrator 6 Narrator 5 Narrator 7 Narrator 8 Narrator 7 Finally, the big day arrived. The sky was a clear blue. The cooking started early in the morning. The delicious smells from the pots filled the air. Everybody washed their cleanest that day. Clothes were getting ironed and straightened. Shoes got a special treatment. Let me go and clean mine. (Exit) It was beginning to feel like a wedding.Wow! (Exit) Then the cake arrived. It was BIG. The biggest I had ever seen. There were three different colours of candles on it. Grandmothers red was there. Two people carried it into the house.Two! I am not joking. Mama told them to hide it in the bedroom so that we could surprise grandmother. As always, Lunga and Madoda found their way into the bedroom. They stayed with the cake for a long time.

Can I just take the flower, Lunga? No one will notice. English (Irritated) NO! Go outside and play, and stop thinking about the cake (Pushes him out)

Everyone mills around like in a silent movie whilst the narrator speaks. They are all wearing colourful birthday cone-hats.The narrators speak as if whispering to the audience. Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Narrator 8 Narrator 9 Grandmother arrived. Everybody looked good. Even Papa put on a tie for the first time since Christmas. We were all very happy. Parents were extra nice. The children behaved themselves too. Finally, we were all in our places and grandmother had to blow all sixty candles. Lunga and Madoda stood next to her and ...1 - 2 - 3 (The cast sing Happy Birthday to grandmother. She blows the candles Lunga and Madoda assist her.) Madoda was about to faint when grandma gave him the first slice of cake. He was as happy as ... Yoh! Waiting is harrrrrrrd, but when the right time comes hmmmmmmm Well done Madoda ...Well done (The cast applaud Madoda and then bow for curtain call.)

THE RUNNING SHOES


This story, like the one of the Little Pig who wanted to fly, teaches our children about the value of perseverance. Pauline had a goal to win the race so that she could keep the running shoes Mr Mokono lent her. The script could be used by a slightly older group once again, an effort has been made to introduce as many parts as possible so that everyone gets a turn to be included.

Characters:
Grandpa Pauline Mr. Mokono Narrators He is old, wise and a bit slow in movement. He is a lovable character. A curious and likeable girl. You would not necessarily see her as a winner but you are not surprised when she wins. A father-figure with a good heart. The narrators are the storytellers. They need to be unique taking their cues from the personality of the child. The more exciting and yet different from each other the better. These are your fast-talkers. It is as though they compete to speak the fastest. These ones show off with their bodies. They warm-up in such a manner that they can draw attention.

It all started three months ago when Pauline visited Mr. Mokonos shoe-store. You see, she had many pictures of runners in her bedroom and she looked at them every morning. She really, really wanted to be a runner. One Saturday morning Grandpa asked Pauline Do you want to come to town with me? Yes Grandpa She enjoyed going to town with Grandpa. Mr. Mokonos shop smelled different from other shops. Pauline liked the mixed smells of leather, shoe polish and glue. There were mens shoes, womens shoes, childrens shoes, old shoes and new shoes. (Confiding in the audience) And then ... and then Pauline saw a pair of running shoes on the counter. She moved closer ..., she looked at them ..., she looked at her bare feet ..., she looked at them again ...Then she thought These are the right size ... they can fit me PERFECTLY ...With that thick springy sole I can run anywhere ... I wish I could have them!!!! When it was Grandpas turn to be served Pauline pointed at the running shoes. Do you want to hear a secret? These running shoes belonged to a great runner from long ago. Her name was Zola Budd. Wow! Wow! I cant believe this. My mother told me about her. Are you sure Mr. Mokono? One hundred percent. She bought them and thought she would like them. But then she decided to carry on running with no shoes. Thats why I have them. But I believe they are magic and they are just waiting for the right person. (Aside) Pauline could not take her eyes off the running shoes. She asked Grandpa to buy them for her, but Grandpa told her he did not have enough money to buy them. She was disappointed.

The athletes line up and there is a lot of excitement among the spectators. Announcer 1 Announcer 2 Ladies and gentlemen, our next race is the long-awaited three kilometre race for girls. May the best runner win. Okay girls you may line-up. On your maraaaarks! Readyyyyyyyyyyy!

Bang goes the gun which could be a clap of wooden planks.The girls start running. They then disappear off-stage. Announcer 1 (As the runners come past) Its neck and neck between the favourites in this race. Yang and Zaza are on each others heels with Pauline a few metres behind them.Well! There is still a long way to go. (As the runners go through the audience and run past the stage) We are half way through the race and the positions have changed. Zaza is way ahead of the pack.

Pauline, Pauline, 50 metres ... Zaza is chasing ... 10 Metres ... P A U L I NE ... Ladies and gentlemen ... boys and girls ...We have a winner! Pauline has WON!!!!

Pauline appears, now walking. She is exhausted. She waves to the audience. Mr. Mokono Pauline Mr. Mokono Well done Pauline. I am proud of you.You worked hard.You did not give up.You made those shoes work. Thank you for giving me a chance Mr. Mokono But you practised and practised.You didnt give up. In the end it wasnt the shoes that were magic you ran like magic!

The cast applaud Pauline. She bows in appreciation. Someone could even bring her a bunch of flowers.

This story, written by Tshepo Mokono, focuses on the value of honesty, and the importance of listening to the little voice in our heads which tells us to do the right thing. It is set for an older age group than the previous dramas. In order to even out the speaking parts, and give as many children as possible the opportunity to perform, we have used a device where the narrator acts as if he/she is the main character, whilst telling the audience what happened.This requires a bit of a stretch of the imagination, and additional props might help the narrators to switch roles as required. Of course, if you would prefer to keep the role to one character, that would be fine too.

Characters:
Kgosana A learner known as the class clown would do well here. The first few seconds of walking onto the stage can be filled with some funny moments. A regal being with lots of dignity. This is a young person with a taste for fancy clothing and bling. He / She likes being looked at and does not like competition.Very jealous. A Cinderella the opposite of Prince. Humble and gifted singer. An ordinary character who might be slightly chubby. This is perhaps the most athletic look. Might even be dressed in a track suit. It would help if this one could be dressed in Pantsula clothes. They are considered to be sly but they are surprisingly good-hearted.

Kgosana pulls a vuvuzela from under his coat and blows it very loud. The characters appear running in all directions. Each one is desperately trying to beat the rest. There is cheating here and there. Exhaustion also sets in. In the end it is Mangi at the front of the queue. Prince Young Lion buys and cheats his way to the second position and then the rest follow. Prince appears on stage. He runs by a few times and then the other characters stand frozen upstage and keep repeating their advice. Prince keeps trying to avoid them but the words stop him. Piggy Mangi Jackie I dont like it when people steal from me. Its not fair. I dont want to steal from others too. Good things are always worth waiting for. Its worth waiting for your turn in life. Give Mangi a chance.We cant all sing. Prince walks to one side of the stage slowly. He is taking the gift back. Narrator 5 Prince took the gift back. As he went back home, his heart felt light and his feet felt freer freer than he had felt the whole day. (Starts applauding) Well done Prince!

S dit vir my nou wie gaan al daardie vere optel? Later daardie oggend sien die diere hoe Klein Varkie n plastieksak na die dak neem. Hy vra toe die ander diere om hom te help om sy pote in die handvatsels te kry.

Die ander diere kyk nou na dieselfde plek, die agterkant van die ouditorium, na Vark se poging om te vlieg. Koei Hen Ou Bok Verteller 8 Verteller 9 Verteller 8 Verteller 9 Verteller 8 Jammer ek kan jou nie help nie. Ek is besig. Nee, nie ek nie. Dis te gevaarlik! Moenie na my kyk nie. Dis net te gek na my smaak. Uiteindelik kry Klein Varkie sy voorpote in die pakkie. Toe doen hy dit weer hy hardloop en SPRING van die dak af. WOEEESJ! Die wind vang toe die pakkie agter hom. Toe ... KADOEF!!! (Daar is skok onder die diere) Hy het op sy snoet beland. Dit was baie seer ... en hy het begin huil.

Klein Varkie loop op die verhoog en huil. Koei Vark Hen (Geirriteerd) Dit help nie om te huil nie. Ek het jou ges dis 'n dom ide. Maar jy wou nie luister nie. Ek huil nie. Die knop op my snoet laat my o traan. Moenie maak of dit nie seer is nie. Ons kan almal sien dat jy seer het. Klein Varkie gaan sit. Hy is baie hartseer. Die diere kyk na hom, dan na mekaar en dan weer na hom en trek hulle skouers op. Hulle wys vir mekaar dat iets gedoen moet word. Hen Koei Ou Bok Hen Vark Diere Verteller 9 Klein varkie ... ek is so jammer ons het jou nie gehelp nie. Moet asseblief nie opgee nie. Ja, jy moet altyd hoop h, Klein Varkie. Al die diere gaan van die verhoog af om Klein Varkie te sien vlieg. Hulle is angstig. Hierdie keer wil hulle h dit moet werk. Die Vertellers praat op 'n animeerde manier. Verteller 4 Verteller 5 Verteller 6 Verteller 7 Verteller 8 Verteller 9 Diere Daar was 'n donderende klank. Dit het harder en harder geword. Toe skielik, kom Koei oor die heuwel. En sy hardloop so vinnig as wat sy kan. Hy hou styf aan haar horings vas. Met pragtige vlerke wat agter hom oopgaan ... (op opwinding) Jaaaaa!!! Gaan Vark, gaan ... vlieg! Uiteindelik! DIE PARTYTJIE DIT HELP OM TE WAG


Die storie is geskryf deur Gcina Mhlophe en was geinspireerd deur haar eie kindertyd. Die storie van Madoda wys vir ons dat om vir iets wat ons regtig wil h te wag, nie altyd maklik is nie, maar dat dit ten einde die moeite werd is. Dis die waarde van selfbeheersing. Jy sal 'n paar sterk karakters nodig h vir die hoofrolle van die storie. Die res van die rolle kan verminder of vermeerder word deur meer of minder mense by die partytjie in te sluit.

Karakters:
Madoda Lunga Dis 'n jong seun wat hou van sy kos. Hy het geen geduld nie. As hy iets dit wil h, wil hy dit nou h. Hy is 'n bietjie oorgewig. Hy is Madoda se neef. Fisies klein maar gesond. Sy stem is anders as die van Madoda sodat ons verskeidenheid kan h wanneer hulle praat. Hy is geduldig en liefdevol. Sy is 'n wyse ou dame. Haar spraak is stadig en sy beweeg op 'n statige manier. Haar hare is grys. Sy het 'n mooi gesig en 'n waardige liggaam. Haar stem is volwasse in vergelyking met die van die kinders. Haar kleredrag reflekteer haar nasionaliteit. Hy is in sy 40's. Die meeste van die tyd in sy oorpak as gevolg van sy beroep of ambag. Hy is 'n vriendelike man. Net soos die vertellers is die karakters verskillend van mekaar om vir ons 'n verskeidenheid van persoonlikhede te gee. Party is energiek. Party is lui. Afrikaans

Lunga en Madoda speel 'n populre plaaslike balspel. Hulle het groot pret. Hulle hardloop agter die bal aan en van die verhoog af. Verteller 1 Hi, dis ons dorp en daardie twee seuns is Lunga en Madoda. Hulle is neefs. Hulle hardloop elke middag na skool huis toe om te sien wie is die vinnigste.

Lunga en Madoda verskyn weer, hardlopend. Madoda is agter Lunga en gee dan op. Madoda Lunga Verteller 2 Ouma Lunga, ek is so honger. Gee vir my iets uit jou kosblik. (lag) Haai nee, Madoda. Jy is altyd honger. (Hy hou aan lag en gaan uit. Madoda volg teleurgesteld). Op 'n dag het ons familie 'n brief gekry van ons Ouma wat in Kimberley woon. (Maak die brief oop en kyk daarna) (Sit aan die ander kant van die verhoog) Aan my kinders en Kleinkinders Hallo en hoe gaan dit met julle? Ek is bly om julle te kan vertel dat ek vir julle almal gaan kom kuier om my sestigste verjaardag te vier. Ek sien uit daarna om hierdie spesiale dag saam met julle te wees. Julle verlangede ouma Maria. Die seuns was baie opgewonde.

Lunga en Madoda verskyn weer hulle is gelukkig, hulle dans en sing. (Hulle volg haar) Mamma, kan ons asseblieeeef lekkers kry? Nee, jy moet vir die partytjie wag. Jy sal die partytjie bederf as jy nou die lekkers eet. Net een, asseblieeeeeefff! Komaan man, Mamma het ges nee! Madoda, hoeveel keer moet ek vir jou s om te wag? Om te wag het nog nooit iemand dood gemaak nie. Kom, ons moet gou maak voor die supermark vol raak. (Hulle verlaat almal die verhoog. Lunga knyp Madoda se boud toe hulle afstap). Die pa moes die verjaardagkoek van die dorp af bestel. Onthou julle die bakkery wat die kleurvolle koeke bak? Daardie een wat koeke bak met perskes en aarbeie op? Almal wou 'n groot stuk h, so die pa moes die grootste koek in die bakkery bestel. Verskoon my, meisie. Herinner asseblief die bakker dat daar sestig kersies op die koek moet wees. My ma se geliefkoosde kleur is rooi. (Aan homself) Ek hoop die ou meisie het nog genoeg asem om dit uit te blaas!!! Gebruik papier en nie lap nie. Madoda, hou op proe! Ons hou jou dop. Ek gaan die kerk se rooi tapyt leen. Ek is seker hulle sal nie omgee nie. Almal van julle, verskoon my asseblief Ek gaan die program tik. As julle nie omgee nie, wil ek die MC wees. Enige voorstel? Teen die einde van die dag was almal lekker moeg, maar almal was gereed. Ek kon nie daardie nag slaap nie. Ek dink nie een kon slaap nie.

Die verteller se oordrag is soos die van verkoopsmense. Skoene is spesiaal goed gepolitoer.Wag, laat ek myne poets. (Gaan af) Dit het begin voel soos 'n troue. Sjoe! (Gaan af) Die koek kom toe daar aan. Dit was GROOT. Die grootste wat ek nog ooit gesien het. Daar was drie verskillende kleure kersies op die koek. Ouma se rooi was daar.Twee mense het dit in die huis in gedra. Ek maak nie 'n grap nie. Mamma het hulle gevra om dit in die slaapkamer weg te steek. Dit moet vir Ouma 'n verrassing wees. Soos altyd vind Lunga en Madoda gou uit waar die koek is. Hulle bly by die koek vir 'n lang tyd.

Almal dwaal rond soos in 'n klanklose film terwyl die verteller praat. Hulle het almal kleurvolle tregtervormige verjaardag hoede op. Die vertellers praat in 'n fluisterstem met die gehoor. Verteller 8 Verteller 9 Verteller 8 Verteller 9 Verteller 1 Madoda Moeder Toe kom Ouma daar aan. Almal lyk goed. Selfs Pappa het 'n das gedra, die eerste keer na Kersfees. Ons was uiteindelik almal daar en Ouma moes haar sestig kersies uitblaas. Lunga en Madoda het langs haar gestaan en 1 ... 2 ... 3 (Almal sing Geluk Liewe Ouma omdat jy verjaar .... Ouma blaas die kersies uit Lunga en Madoda help haar). Madoda wou flou word toe Ouma vir hom die eerste stuk koek gee. Hy was so gelukkig soos ... Joe! Om te wag is swaar, maar wanneer die regte tyd kom Hmmmmmm Goed gedoen, Madoda ... goed gedoen.

DIE HARDLOOPSKOENE
Net soos die storie van die klein varkie wat wou vlieg, leer hierdie storie kinders oor waardes en uithou. Pauline het 'n doel gehad om die resies te wen sodat sy die hardloopskoene wat Meneer Mokono vir haar geleen het te kon hou. Die teks kan deur 'n effens ouer groep gebruik word weereens is probeer om soveel moontlike spelers in te sluit sodat elkeen 'n kans kan kry om deel te neem.

Karakters:
Oupa Pauline Hy is oud en wys en 'n bietjie stadig. Hy is 'n dierbare karakter. 'n Nuuskierige, innemende meisie. Jy sal haar nie maklik as 'n wenner beskou nie maar jy is ook nie verbaas as sy wen nie. Die vertellers is die storievertellers. Hulle moet uniek wees. Hulle moet leiding neem van die kind. Hoe meer opwindend en tog verskillend van mekaar, hoe beter. Hulle praat vinnig. Dis asof hulle met mekaar kompeteer oor wie die vinnigste praat. Hulle wys hul liggame af.Wanneer hulle opwarm trek hulle aandag.

Die toneelstuk begin met atlete wat opwarm vir 'n resies. Hulle strek, hardloop rond, fokus, elkeen op sy unieke manier, vasberade om te wen. Pauline, Oupa en Meneer Mokono lewer hulle dialoog soos gelei deur die vertellers. Hulle is in 'n ander area as die atlete.

Dit het alles drie maande gelede gebeur toe Pauline Meneer Mokono se skoenwinkel besoek het. Julle sien, Pauline het baie prente van hardlopers teen haar kamermuur gehad. Elke oggend het sy na die prente gekyk. Sy wou so graag net soos haar helde 'n hardloper wees. Een Saterdagoggend vra Oupa vir Pauline: Wil jy saam met my dorp toe gaan? Ja Oupa. Sy het daarvan gehou om saam met haar oupa dorp toe te gaan. Meneer Mokono se winkel het anders geruik as ander winkels. Pauline het van die gemengde reuk van leer, skoenpolitoer en gom gehou. Daar was skoene vir mans, skoene vir vrouens, skoene vir kinders, ou skoene en nuwe skoene. En toe ... en toe sien Pauline 'n paar hardloopskoene op die toonbank staan. Sy het nader beweeg ... sy het daarna gekyk ... en toe na haar kaal voete ... en toe weer na die skoene ... toe dink sy. Hierdie is die regte grootte. Hulle sal my perfek pas ... met hulle sal ek oral kan hardloop ... ek wens ek kan hulle kry. Toe dit Oupa se beurt is om gehelp toe word, wys Pauline na die hardloopskoene.

Mnr. Mokono Een honderd persent. Sy het dit gekoop en gedink sy sal daarvan hou, maar toe besluit sy om aan te hou om kaalvoet te hardloop. Dis die rede hoekom ek hulle nou het. Ek het besluit dat hulle wonderskoene is en net vir die regte persoon wag. Verteller 5 [Eenkant] Pauline kon nie haar o van die hardloopskoene afneem nie. Die volgende twee vertellers wat saam met die atlete was terwyl hulle op die verhoog opgewarm het, draf terwyl hulle ons deur die storie neem. Die volgende dag het sy saam met die hond na die winkel toe gehardloop. Toe die son sak hardloop sy saam met haar broer om haar ma by die busstop te gaan haal. Elke keer wanneer sy gehardloop het, het sy 'n bietjie vinniger en 'n bietjie verder gehardloop. In pouse tyd by die skool het sy tien keer om die speelgrond gehardloop. Na skool het sy saam met die jong tannies van die straat gaan hardloop. Die volgende oggend het sy saam met die sokkerspan gehardloop. Elke dag het sy sterker en sterker geword. Sy het nie opgehou nie en vinniger en vinniger geword. Die atletiekafrigter het Pauline se harde werk gesien. Hy het haar aangemoedig en haar gehelp. Sy was gereed vir die resies.

Pauline, Pauline, 50 meter ... Zaza is op haar hakke ... 10 meters ... P A U L I N E ... Dames en here ... seuns en meisies ... Ons het 'n wenner! Pauline het gewen!

Die storie wat deur Tshepo Mokono geskryf is, fokus op die waarde van eerlikheid en hoe belangrik dis is om na die 'klein stemmetjie' in ons kop te luister, wat vir ons vertel om die regte ding te doen. Dit is vir 'n ouer ouderdomsgroep as die vorige dramas bedoel. Om die spreekbeurte eweredig te verdeel en die meeste kinders die geleentheid te gee om deel te neem, het ons 'n manier gekry om die verteller te laat speel as of hy/sy die hoofkarakter is. Dit beteken dat die verbeelding regtig hier ingespan sal moet word en dat addisionele 'props' die vertellers sal help om rolle om te ruil soos benodig. Maar natuurlik, as jy verkies dat 'n karakter net een rol vertolk, is dit goed so.

Karakters:
Kgosana Die leerder wat bekend staan as die klasnar sal goed pas in die rol. Die eerste paar sekondes wat hy op die verhoog is kan gevul word met grappige oomblikke. 'n Koninlike wese met baie waardigheid. Dis 'n jong persoon wat van mooi klere en blinkgoed hou. Hy/Sy hou daarvan om aandag te trek en hou nie van kompetisie nie. Baie jaloers. 'n Aspoestertjie die teenoorgestelde van Prins. Nederige en talentvolle sanger. 'n Gewone karakter wat effens mollig is. Hierdie karakter het 'n atletiese beeld. Kan 'n sweetpak dra. Dit sal help as hierdie een Pantsula klere aanhet. Hulle word as skelm gesien maar kan verrassend goedhartig wees.

Vertellers

Die vertellers is die storievertellers. Hulle moet uniek wees. Hulle moet hul wagwoord van die persoonlikhede van die kinders kan neem. Hoe meer opwindend en tog verskillend van mekaar, hoe beter.Wanneer hulle as Prins speel sal hulle 'n soort manier moet vind om dit te wys dalk 'n masker.

Kgosana die koning se boodskapper loop stilletjies op die verhoog. Hy kyk rond om te sien of iemand hom dophou. Die koning sit op die verhoog sodat hy al die aksie kan sien tot nou toe. Kgosana haal 'n vuvuzela onder sy jas uit en blaas dit baie hard. Dit lyk of die karakters in alle rigtings rondhardloop. Elke een probeer desperaat om die ander te wen. Daar is skelmstreke hier en daar. Hulle raak uitgeput. Aan die einde is Mangi voor in die ry. Prins Jong Leeu, koop en kroek sy weg na die tweede posisie en die res volg. Daardie aand trek Prins sy hardloopskoene aan en hardloop na aap se huis toe. Hy het gewag tot al die ander apies huis toe is en Mangi vas aan die slaap was. Hy kruip toe in en steel die geskenk. Dit was nou syne.

Prins verskyn op die verhoog. Hy hardloop 'n paar keer verby terwyl die ander karakters gevries op die verhoog staan en hulle advies herhaal. Prins hou aan om hulle te ignoreer maar die woorde stop hom in sy spore. Varkie Mangi Jackie Ek hou nie daarvan as iemand van my steel nie. Dis nie bilik nie. Ek wil ook nie van ander steel nie. Dis altyd die moeite werd om vir goeie dinge te wag. Dis die moeite werd om vir jou kans in die lewe te wag. Gee vir Mangi 'n kans. Ons kan nie almal sing nie. Prins loop stadig na die een kant van die verhoog. Hy neem die geskenk terug.
