1.0 INTRODUCTION Statistics is the science of data collection, organization, and interpretation. The data is often numerical but may take other forms including relationships between entities. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. The purpose is to obtain some overall understanding of group characteristics.

Statistics is considered by some to be a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data, while others consider it a branch of mathematics concerned with collecting and interpreting data. Because of its empirical roots and its focus on applications, statistics is usually considered to be a distinct mathematical science rather than a branch of mathematics.

Statisticians improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Statistics also provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business.

People in varied occupations use statistics. Health professionals use statistical methods to determine whether a specific drug or procedure is useful in the treatment of medical problems. Weather forecasters use statistics to more accurately predict the weather. Engineers use statistics to benchmark standards for product safety and quality. Scientists employ statistical methods to design effective experiments. Economists apply statistical techniques in predicting future economic trends.

Sports recruiters use statistics to check out potential athletes. Sports teams also use statistics to prepare for upcoming opponents. They look to see which players on the opposing teams are doing well at that time. They also use statistics to decide which players are doing well and they try to predict which players will bring the best results for the game.

The people who pick out merchandise for retail stores also use statistics. They look to find out what styles and colours sold the best in previous seasons and then they decide what to buy. Police officers also use statistics in several ways. The first way is to find out what intersections have the highest accident rate and then they are able to watch those intersections and reduce the number of accidents. They also study the crime rates in different neighbourhoods to show the need for additional police force.

In this survey, we had survey about the sudden change in the PPSMI policy. PPSMI is the outcome of a policy decision made by the Government of Malaysia as the result from the Ministers Council Meeting held on 19 July 2002.The implementation of PPSMI was carried out in stages beginning with the 2003 schooling session. The pioneers were all Year 1 students for Primary Schools, Form 1 and Lower 6 students for Secondary Schools. The full implementation of PPSMI was in 2007 for Secondary Schools and 2008 for Primary Schools.

CONDUCTING A SURVEY Surveys are used in many fields to gather data on the knowledge, attitude and

behaviour of the general public or specific populations. This information is used to design political campaigns, create marketing strategies, plan for public services and many other purposes. Planning offices may use surveys to determine public attitudes and preferences about growth options, or to assess the use of different public services, such as roads or playgrounds. Through this lesson, students will gain experience in gathering data used for decision-making, as well as the ability to more critically assess conclusions based on survey data. It is a type of gathering information that is such an important way to help people make decisions about topics of interest. Surveys can help people to decide what needs changing, where money should be spent, what products to purchase, what problems there might be, or lots of other questions you may have at any time. The best part about surveys is that they can be used to answer any question about any topic. Here are four steps to a successful survey and it includes create the questions, ask the questions, tally the results and present the results. In this coursework, we have to conduct a survey on several issues that have been given to us. The issues are abolishing standard examinations such as UPSR and PMR in schools, The price hike in essential items such as sugar, petrol and LPG, Night lectures in IPG Kampus Ipoh, The facilities available in IPG Kampus Ipoh, The facilities available outside IPG Kampus Ipoh and The sudden change in the PPSMI policy.

Once the issue has been selected, then our group discuss about the questionnaire. Then we show the draft about the questions to our lecturer so that she can make some corrections and give some comments and hence, guide us to do the correct way of constructing the right and suitable questions. After that, we distribute the questionnaire to our respondents. After they have answered the questionnaire, we collect back all the questionnaire to gather the information from our respondents. We use tally method to make it easier when analysis the questions and last but not least, all the data and the information are presented in the various non-linear form and we write a report based on the survey for the selected topic.

2.1 CHOOSING AN ISSUE For this task, we are provided six different titles. Each group should carry out a survey on a given topic. A representative from our group has done a draw lock together representatives of other groups. Extracts from it, we got the title of the sudden change of PPSMI policy. Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik Dalam Bahasa

Inggeris (PPSMI) is a government policy aimed to improve the command of the English language among pupils at primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. In accordance to this policy, the Science and Mathematics subjects are taught in the English medium as opposed to the Malay medium used before. This policy was introduced by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir bin Mohamad in 2003. PPSMI has been the subject of debate among academics, politicians and the public alike, which culminated to the announcement of the policy's reversal in 2012 by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The rational of the change of the medium of instruction from Malay language to English for the teaching and learning in Science and Mathematics as the government is concern on the nations human capital development towards achieving the standard of developed country. Besides that, English language is the language spoken internationally and mastery in this language would allow easy access to information in these fields. In addition, the implementation of PPSMI was made to ensure students mastery in Science and Mathematics of the view that most of the sources are available in English. Indirectly, enhancing the student to communicate in English, thus, improve their language.

CONSTRUCTING A QUESTIONNAIRE We have discussed and construct 10 questions in the questionnaire part. It

also includes two questions about the background of the respondents such as their gender and occupations. We also provide open ended questions to get their opinion regarding the topic chosen and they can also give their suggestion that they think is suitable. The sample of our groups questionnaire is as below:

Based on the question 1, respondents had gave their answer which is 31 respondents were agree in the sudden change in the PPSMI policy, 3 respondents were not sure and 6 respondents were disagree on that question. There were many opinions from the respondents that we had got. Students had stated that teaching

Science and Math in Malay Language is better for the students and changes will give negative effect to the students. They also said that study Science and Math in English had burdened them. While lecturer had state that sudden change in PPSMI policy will made the students were very shocked and waste a lot of money. They also said that PPSMI does not work in improving students achievement in Math and Science . Parents also gave their opinion that sudden change in PPSMI policy will help the students from the rural area. They also said that their children were not good in English so studied Math and Science in English will burden their children. Figure 5: Shows the number of respondents who think that the terms in both subjects (Science and Mathematics) should be changed to Malay language. From the bar chart above, 19 respondents say yes about to change the terms in both subjects (Science and Mathematics) to Malay Language. Most of them agree as it is easy to understand. Besides that, it is easy to understand and better to learn

in own language. On top of that, the knowledge is easy to deliver and understand by the students. In fact, this can also improvise Malay language among the students. Basically, students know more terms in Malay language. There is some students who cannot understand the English subject itself, thus when learning Science and Mathematics in English, they find it very difficult. Science and Mathematics are technical and practical subjects and not language subjects, thus it should be learned in Malay language instead of English. Whereas, 13 respondents say no to change the terms of both subjects in Malay. This is because, the terms are sound funny and quite more difficult when they are changed into Malay language. A part from that, English is not really difficult since we learnt the subject from primary school. The terms used are internationally agreed and used all over the world in their educational system. If the words are changed to Malay, it is hard to find the keywords in the internet for further explanation and better understanding. Most of the references books are in English, so we have to be familiar with the terms used. On top of that, some of the terms are not suitable to change in Malay. They also think that it is very hard to remember if the terms are changed into Malay. In the other hand, 7 respondents are not sure whether to change the terms we used in English nowadays to Malay. They think that, it is easy to learn in bilingual but it may take a long time during the class period to teach for that particular subject if the teacher has to teach in bilingual to make the students understand. Besides that, mixing language when learning can create confusedness among the students.

Figure 6: The policy of PPSMI will cause Science and Mathematics subjects become tougher. From the pie chart above, we can see that 20 respondents or 50% of them agree that the policy of PPSMI will cause Science and Mathematics subjects become tougher. This is because, since these subjects are teaching in English, the

students especially from the rural area having difficulty in understanding what they learn. As a result, their results from the test or examination drop and this can make them fail. 3 respondents or 7% are not sure about this matter and 17 respondents or 43% think that this policy are not causing the subjects become tougher to be learnt. They feel that actually this policy is not burdened at all and instead of that, the number of excellent students increase from year to year. Figure 7: Number of respondents that agree PPSMI policy may improve the students English language

Based on the survey, 18 respondents confident that PPSMI may helps improve students English. This is because more subjects are teaching in English than before. So, student will speak more in English in school. Besides that, the students need to participate more in Science subject during teaching and learning session. Thus, the student can build their language and be more confident to speak. In addition, there are 13 respondents who said that PPSMI may not help to improve the students language. This kind of respondent think that, the interaction between the students and teacher will be less as the student are ashamed to speak in English. As a result, the student unable to improve their language and will miss the lesson. QUESTION 6: If we learn Science and Mathematics in English, do you think the patriotism among students will decreased? Why?

PPSMI policy may decreased the patriotism among the students.

Answer

Figure 8: the number of respondents that agree PPSMI policy may decrease the patriotism among the students.

About 16 respondents agreed that learn Science and Mathematics in English can decreased the patriotism among the students. This is because the students will have less exposure to the national language, which is a Bahasa Melayu especially non Malay student. So they will less speak in Bahasa Melayu. Moreover, the patriotism can decrease because the students learn the colonist language. This may cause the student to love more the colonist country. A part from that, 19 respondents did not agree that learn Science and Mathematics in English can decreased the patriotism among the students. For them, language is not very associated with spirit of patriotism. Besides that, the students only communicate in English during the learning process in the school but at home they will speak their mother tongue. Another five respondents are not sure that learn Science and Mathematics in English can decrease the patriotism among the students. According to them, learn history give more moral value on patriotism to students than learn Science and Mathematics in English.

QUESTION 7: Do you think the PPSMI policy burdens the teachers? From the survey carried, based on the seventh question, we found that for the question 7, 22 respondents or 55% agreed that the PPISMP policy burdens the teachers, followed with 8 respondents disagree or 20% and 10 respondents or 20% not sure . This can be seen in the pie chart below:

YES

NO

NOT SURE

25%

55% 20%

Figure 9: The PPSMI policy burdens the teachers Through this survey, most of them agree or ticked yes based on the few of reasons, like teachers who have taught in BM for years, especially older teachers, they will have to take course for respective language and the subjects already taught in Bahasa before. There also the reason stated that teachers are not prepared to teach in English and they have to prepare themselves for the policy. While the reasons given by the respondents that disagree or ticked no are the teachers know their responsibilities and all teachers should learn English. The other reason is the teachers should prepare themselves with any possibilities.

QUESTION 8: Do you think the sudden change in the policy will burden the government financially? Besides that, there are 31 respondents or 77% said yes for the eighth question that sound Do you think the sudden change in the policy will burden the government financially?, while 6 respondents or 15% said no and 3 respondents or 8% are not sure. Based on this data, the pie graph is constructed for the easy understanding.

Sudden change in the policy will burden the government financially

8% 15% YES NO 77% NOT SURE

Figure 10: The sudden change in the policy burden the government financially From this survey, the respondents that ticked yes are strictly stand on their opinions based on the reasons like the government need to renew the textbook or syllabus and the policy is wasting the money, as lot of change will include a massive budget. The other reasonable opinions are the policy was ringing no effect and there will be a lot of programs will be handled. While the respondents that ticked no are

leaving the space provided without any reason, except for just a reason, which is stated that the government is doing the best for the learning system in Malaysia.

QUESTION 9: Do you think the PPSMI is a success or failure? Give your opinion.

The success or the failure of the PPSMI

Success Failure

48% 52%

Figure 11: The success or the failure of the PPSMI. From the pie chart above, we can conclude that 48% of the respondents said that the PPSMI was failed, while the other 52% said that the PPSMI was success. Some on them that said the PPSMI was failed thought that because students do not understand about the lesson they had learned. Furthermore, the student also cannot improve their English when learned Science and Mathematics in English. For student in rural schools, they thought that learned Science and Mathematics in English was hard because some of them cannot master the English subject very

well. So, they might be a big different result between the rural students and the student in city.

QUESTION 10: Give your own suggestion to improve the learning of Science and Mathematics in the future educational system. So, to improve the learning of Science and Mathematics in English, the respondents suggested that these two subjects should be learns theoretically and practically. Then, more experiment should be conduct for Science subject. In addition, they wanted these subjects to be learns in bilingual languages. Furthermore, they suggested these languages to be teach in creative ways of teaching with the technological devices.

CONCLUSION Based on the survey, there are kinds of responses given by the respondents. These varying patterns made our data more interesting to be interpret and thus attract the people to see the data shown. Overall, based on the survey, we stand on our foot that the PPSMI policy should not be defended and this upside down situation should be fixed to the original, which is the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science should be converted into the Bahasa Malaysia. The PPSMI is not be seen as failure or success, but more as the conflicts in the learning system in Malaysia, which is to drive the students for a better standard and achievement in order to produce the qualified and educated community of Malaysia.

REFLECTION Name: Mohd Hanafi Bin Sulaiman

Alhamdulillah, thanks to ALLAH S.W.T as I can finish up this assignment. During the progress to finish up this assignment, the first thing that I do is trying to understand about the survey. Then, I make a research about the survey report. The survey report is an official report prepared on a standardized form, which records the circumstance concerning the data. For the first step, before writing the report, I need to make the questionnaire based on the task that had given to us. The task was to carry out the survey to find out about people view on the sudden change in the PPSMI policy. So, in making the questionnaire, we had made the sample questionnaire first to know the understandings of the respondents on it. After the respondents understand the questionnaire, we had distributed the questionnaire to the respondent randomly. The respondents that involves in this survey were parents, lecturers and students.

In the questionnaire, we had put the background profile that can help us in the report. Not only that, we had listed the suitable answer for them to tick. This makes them easier to take and answer the questionnaires. To make us easier to analyse the data, we had made the master tally sheet. Although we had make some mistakes in the questionnaire, after we met our lecturer, Miss Lena, we had get a better understanding and we had made the correction on it.

In conducting the survey, we had presenting the data through visual illustrations like pie chart and histogram. From it, we can analyse the data easily.

Furthermore, we also had interpret and making the inference about the data. We also knew how to present the data using the visual illustration from computer. This survey had increased our understanding and skills about the survey.

From this survey, we also got the people view on the sudden change in the PPSMI policy. Most of them not agree with the sudden change in this policy. They had given many reason and suggestion about this problem. Some of them agree, some of them not agree and also there are people that are not sure about the sudden change in the PPSMI policy.

We use statistics in representing the data in this survey. From the research on the internet, I knew that statistics is the science of data collection, organization, and interpretation. The data is often numerical but may take other forms including relationships between entities. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. The purpose is to obtain some overall understanding of group characteristics.

Besides, during do this assignment, I and my group members discussed and shared the opinion to make this assignment to be better. When we had done this assignment, we realised that this assignment is not so hard that we thought.

In conclusion, we hope that by doing this assignment, our understanding in conducting the survey increases. Perhaps, we hope that we will have no problem to write the report next time. Thank you.

REFLECTION NAME: NURANNISA BINTI SUYATIM In this semester, I was getting course work for Basic Mathemathics related to writing survey report. This assignment began on 3rd September 2010 and ended on 1 October 2010. For this course I need to complete the course work as a team. After a several discussions among the group members and with the lecturer, my group and I have done a questionnaire and distributed it to our respondent which including lecturers, parents and school students. During this period, many of the problems I have encountered. I had to sleep late to complete this task. I have faced other problem because of the lack of reference materials to complete this assignment. Besides that, my group has limit time to have discussion. This is because the course work needs to be completed during the midterm. So, we have to contact each other via telephone an email during that time. However, with the permission of Allah, we can also complete this task successfully. In addition, I have a lot of course work from other lecturers. All course work must be submitted in a timely manner. But, Alhamdulillah I managed to complete all course work. Group members helped me in completing this course work. We frequently hold discussions among us so to better understand how to complete the course work. I learned a lot from this subject. Now, I am improve the skill of collecting, managing and representing data using suitable visual representation and documenting the finding of a survey report. I know the how to write survey report.

Besides that, this course work foster cooperation between the group members. Moreover, I learn how to use computer generic program and to analysis the questionnaire. In addition, I hope it meets criteria tasks set by lecturers. I also hope that this course work will be reading and reference materials to students who will come and get blessings from him.

REFLECTION NAME: NURUL AINAAMIRA BINTI MOHD NOR RASHIDI First and foremost, praise to The Almighty God for giving me good health and safety while finishing this Basic Mathematics (MT3311D1) assignment for this semester. I have faced many problems when do this assignment. First, I do not know better what to include as content in this folio. Thus, to solve this problem, I always collaborate with my groups members, Nurannisa, Nurfatin, Haslam and Hanafi and make group discussions in order to complete our task. Besides that, we also get guidances from our lecturer, Miss Lena Vimalanandan to accomplish this task, thanks a lot to her for her guidance and advices. But, all of that not break up our spirit to finish the assignment. To make our work become easier, after we have gathered all the data and discussed how to write the report and consist of various non-linear forms such as the bar chart, pie chart and others, we have divided the job to be done by each of the member. The sources are from the internet, references books and also from the lecturers notes about statistics, graph, steps when conducting survey and all that. I have gained more knowledge about this topic in detail. For example, I am more practical about how to collect the data and classify the questions constructed based on their types of data. Not only that, this assignment gives me a lot of valuable experienced such as we walked together to the residential area nearby to see the respondents and we saw a lot of people with different behaviour. It also and grows the positive attitude in my behaviour such as working as a group and cooperation. I am very thankful to work in the group because all of them give full commitment and willing to sacrifice their leisure time to discuss about the data collected.

Fortunately, we can finish this task in a given time and Im feel relief. I felt very satisfied with this coursework and I hope that this report can give benefits to others. Thats all, thank you.
