Music in the Barns wraps powerful season with innovative concert of rarely-heard repertoire
August 1 performance brings special not-to-be-missed musical guests to Toronto
TORONTO Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble wraps its second season of boundary-pushing performances on Aug. 1, 2013 with a return to its home venue, the mainspace of Artscape Wychwood Barns. Putting an innovative spin on the traditional chamber concert by channeling the improvisatory art happenings of the 1970s, the performance offers a fresh and intimate experience as the players interact with audience members in various configurations. Special guests include The Spectrolite Ensemble with clarinetist Sean Rice (of the National Arts Centre Orchestra) and cellist Vernon Regehr. Offering a sophisticated combination of repertoire that journeys from jazz to classical and minimalism to modernism, the program features several rarely-performed powerhouse pieces including Philip Glass String Quartet No. 5, Alan Shulmans belle-poque inspired Rendezvous for clarinet and string quartet (premiered by Benny Goodman in 1946), Gra for solo clarinet by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Elliott Carter and Paul Hindemiths marvelous Clarinet Quintet, Op. 30. Fresh from a four-performance run of Figaros Wedding with Against the Grain Theatrehailed by the Toronto Star as a treat from beginning to end,Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble is gearing up for this next, up-close and action packed event. Known for bringing concert experiences into social and experiential spheres, Music in the Barns will once again take the 7,500 sq. ft. warehouse space to new artistic and imaginative heights. The Ensembles world-class performances feature multi-level staging and in-the-round seating, while guests are also encouraged to enjoy a glass of wine as they take in the spectacular sounds and surroundings.
