The most famous of these were vulcanized rubber, gun cotton, and celluloid. The first semi-synthetic polymer produced was Bakelite in 1909 and was soon followed by the first synthetic fiber, rayon, which was developed in 1911. Even with these developments, it was not until World War II that significant changes took place in the polymer industry. Prior to world war II, natural substances were generally available; therefore, synthetics that were being developed were not a necessity. Once the world went to war, our natural sources of latex, wool, silk, and other materials were cut off, making the use of synthetics critical. During this time period, we saw the use of nylon, acrylic, neoprene, SBR, polyethylene, and many more polymers take the place of natural materials that were no longer available. Since then, the polymer industry has continued to grow and has evolved into one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. and in the world.
STRUCTURE OF POLYMERS:
Many common classes of polymers arecomposed of hydrocarbons. These polymers are specifically made of small units bonded into long chains. Carbone makes up the backbone of the molecule atomsare bonded along the backbone. Below is a diagram of polythelene, the simplest polymer structure.

There are polymers that contain only carbon and hydrogen. Polypropylene, polybutylene, polystyrene, and polymethylpentene are examples of these. Even though the basic makeup of many polymers polyvinyl chloride(PVC) contains chlorine.Nylon contains nitrogen and oxygen. Teflon contains fluorine. Polyester and polycarbonates contain oxygen. Vulcanized rubber and Thiokol sulphus contain.there are also some polymers that, instead of having a carbon backbone, have a silicon-oxygen backbone. These are considered inorganic polymers. One of the most famous silicon-based polymers is Silly Putty.

17 many applications such as food wrap, plexiglas, headlights and contact lenses. Controlling and quenching the polymerization process can result in amorphous organization. Obviously, now all polymers are transparent. The polymer chains in object that are translucent and opaque are in more crystalline arrangement. By definition a crystalline arrangement has atoms, ions, or in this case, molecules in a distinct pattern. You generally think of crystalline structures in salt and gemstones, but not in plastics. Just as quenching can produce amorphous arrangements, processing can control the degree of crystallinity. The higher the degree of crystallinity, the less light can pass through the polymer. Therefore, the degree of translucence of opaqueness of the polymer is directly affected by its crystallinity. Engineers arealways producing better materials by manipulating the molecular structure that affects the final polymer produced. Manufacturers and processors introduce various fillers, reinforcements, and additives into the base polymers to expand product possibilities.
CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMERS
Polymers are divided into two distinct groups:

18 Thermoplastics and thermosets. The majority of polymers are thermoplastic,meaning that once the polymer is formed it can be heated and reformed over and over again. This property allows for easy processing and recycling. The other group, the thermosets, can not be remelted. Once these polymers are formed, reheating will cause the material to scorch. Every polymer has very distinct characterisitics, but most polymers have the following general attributes. 1. Polymers can be very resistant to chemicals. Consider all the cleaning fluids in your home that are packaged in plastic. Reading the warning labels that describe what happens when the chemical comes in contact with skin or eyes or is ingested will emphasize the chemical resistance of these materials. 2. Polymers can be both thermal and electrical insulators. A walk through your house will reinforce this concept, as you consider all the appliances,cords,electrical outlets, and wiring, that are made or covered with polymeric materials. Thermal resistance is evident in the kithen with pot and pan handles made of polymers, the coffee pot handle , the foam core of refrigerators and freezers, insulated cups, coolers , and microwave cookware. The thermal underwear that many skiers wear is made of polypropylene and the fiberfill in winter jackets is acrylic. 3. Generally, polymers are very light in mass with varying degrees of strength. Consider the range of applications, form dime store toys to the frame structure of space stations, or form delicate nylon fiber in pantyhose to Kevlar, which used in bulletproof vests. 4. Polymers can be processed in various ways to produce thin fibers of very parts. Plastics can be molded into bottles ot the body of a car or be mixed with solvents to become an adhesive or a paint. Elastomers and some plastics stretch and are very flexible. Other polymers can be foamed like polystyrene and urethane, to name just two examples. Polymers are materials with a properties that can be further enhanced by a wide range of additives to broaden their uses and applications. In addressing all the superior attributes of polymers, it is equally important to discuss some of the difficulties associated with the material. Plastics deteriorate but never decompose completely, but neither does galss,paper,or aluminium. Plastics make up 9.9 percent of our trash by weight compared to paper, which constitutes 39 percent. Glass and metals make up 13 percent by weight. In 1997 , Americans produced 217million tons of trash. Applications for recycled plastics are growing every day. Plastics can be blended with virgin plastic to reduce cost without sacrificing properties. Recycled plastics are used to make polymeric timbers for use in picnic tables, fences, and outdoor toys , thus saving natural lumber. Plastic from 2-liter bottles is even being spun into fiber for the production of carpet. A solution for plastics that are not recycled, especially those that are soiled, such as used microwave food wrap or diapers, can be a waste-to-energy system.

19 Incineration of polymers produces heat energy. The heat energy produced by the burning plastics not only can be converted to electrical energy but helps burn the wet trash that is present. Paper also produced heat when burned, but not as much as plastics. On the other hand, glass, aluminium a other metals do not release any energy hen burned. Polymers affect every day of our life. These materials have so many varied characteristics and applications that their usefulness can only be measured by our imagination. Polymers are the materials of past, present , and future generations.

JOHANNESBURG, August , 12/ PRNewswire-First Call/--As previously disclosed by Sosal Limited(NYSE:SSL:JSE:SOL) as part of its ongoing disclosures, the south African Competition commission has been investigating the South African Polymers Industry. The competition Commission announced today that its has referred its findings to the competition Tribunal for adjunction. In its announcement the competition commission stated that it has referred complaints of collusion and excessive pricing in the polymers market against Sasol chemical Industries Limited and Safripol Limited to the competition Tribunal for adjunction. It also announced that it has simultaneously reached a settlement with Safripol in which Safripol admits that the supply agreement between SCI and satipol and its implementation amounted to price fixing in contravention of the competition Act. The competition commission has indicated that its seeking an administrative penalty of 10% of SCIs annual turnover of these alleged contraventions. The competitions commissions allegation of collusion relates to an agreement of the Sasol Polymers division of SCI with safripol,which was structured at the behest of the former competition board following the formation of Polifin in 1994. The agreement was structured to ensure safripolss ongoing access to propylene supply at a market-related price. South African propylene and polypropylene prices are comparable to international prices and hence sasol believes that there is no legitimate basis for the competition commissions announcement. Given SCIs interactions with the competition commission and knowledge of this matter, SCI does not believe that its breached any competition laws, Accordingly at this time, there is no reasonable certainity as to whether or not SCI will be found to have contravened competition laws as alleged, whether a penalty will be imposed and the quantum there of.SCI intends defending the matter before the competition Tribunal should be amicable resolution of the matter not be acheived.

High performance polymers: market report: in a newly published study on high-performance polymers, analyst firm Frost & Sullivan makes an upbeat assessment of the market , forecasting high growth rates in the medium to long term. High performance polymers occupy the top position in the performance pyramid; they are characterized by their superlative mechanical, chemical , and thermal properties. These also have been among the fastest- growing product groups for many years, giving way to new applications driven by innovation and product development. Market interest is particularly high in these materials because they suppliers high margins at a tie when the rest of the industry is facing rising raw-material costs and dwindling profits.

MARKET DESCRIPTION:
Many niche polymers constitute the high performance market. Some of them are well known, having been use for decades. These includes product groups such as fluro polymers and high performance polyamides. There also are many emerging materials that have grown in importance over the past decades:example include polyphenylene sulphide and polyketones. The list of high performance polymers analysed in the Frost & Sullivan study includes fluro polymers , high- performance polyamides,liquid crystal polystes, polyphenylene sulphides, polyketones, and polysulphones. The high performance market is characterized by material volumes considerably lower than commodity and even many engineering polmers. However, higher pricing means that the market is still substantial in terms of revenue. In Europe the high performance- polymers market was worth 1.6 million in 2007 and will grow at a rate of 7.0% through 2014. Polymers at the top end of the performance scale, such as PEEK will show growth rates that are much higher than this average, while the comparatively higher- volume fluoropolymers will grow at a lower annual rate. Important factors driving demand for high performance polymers include product development and innovation, increasing performance requirements, new applications and the effect of regulatory controls. Product development- we are seeing new grades and even new chemistry being introduced. This will help expand the presence of high-performance materials across various end users markets; a recent example is DSMs introduction of PA4T, which will add to the companys PA4T high-performance polyamide product line. Increasing performance requirements placed on materials in key applications, such as automotive and electronics, demand the use of high-performance plastics, while expansion into new application will create incrementally growing demand for these materials. A good example of this is PEEK, which is now being offered for varied applications, including coating for cookware and medical products. Regulations such as RoHS, WEEE, and the impetus is areas such as emission control act in favour of high-performance plastics, as they can provide fire resistance without the addition of harmful chemicals such as halogenated flame retardants.

The department functions in collaboration with the rubber research institute if India, Kottayam. It offers M.Tech in polymer technology. Entry qualification for this programme is a B.E/B.Tech degree in polymer science and rubber technology , chemical engineering technology , M.Sc. polymer chemeistry , M.Sc chemistry with polymer chemistry as a specialization with at least 60 percent and a valid GATE score. Those who do not possess a valid GATE score can also apply. But their applications will be considered only if applications with the GATE score are not available. In such cases, admission will be based on the departmental admission test.
