Minor Performance Task: Economics and the Scientific Method Social Studies IV Economics Minor Performance Task in Analyzing Social/Economic Problems in the Philippines Using the Scientific Method Rationale and Objectives As a citizen of the society with a social contract to the government in helping the country towards progress and development, it is important to be aware of the problems besetting the nation. More than being aware, one must also come up with a solution to these problems in the country, and be a part of that particular process towards nation-building. Steps 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. A student may work individually or with a partner in class in identifying and solving a socio-economic problem. Each is a socio-economic analyst that must present a report to the problem that they consider the President must prioritize. The student/pair will state their problem and come up with at least two hypotheses that they may solve/answer the problem. All students are given a week to gather data from the internet, news reports, books, interviews, statistical data, or from any other medium. These data are to be printed on a short bond paper and compiled in a slide folder. The data gathered are to be brought to class, where steps 4 (data analysis) and 5 (conclusion/recommendation) of the scientific method are to be done during 1 Social Studies period, to be announced by their respective teacher. In the same folder, students must bring at least 5 sheets of intermediate pad, where they will write and construct steps 4 and 5. The final paper is to be handed at the end of the day of the Performance Task-making, with the following format:

Which of your hypotheses/ assumptions are correct? 2. What is your conclusion about the problem? 3. What will you recommend to the President as a possible solution to the problem? 4. What can you do as a student to become part of the solution to the problem?

RUBRICS FOR GRADING

Parts of the Paper/Criteria Statement of the Problem Excellent (10-9) The problem is well defined, without ambiguity, and stated in a concise manner. The hypotheses given are highly logical and feasible. The analysis of data shows the researchers higher order thinking and the ability to see patterns and trends from data gathered. The researchers arrived at a conclusion that accurately and correctly responds to the problem and gave logical and clear recommendations. Excellent (5) The researchers provided comprehensive background about the problems and conditions they researched. The researchers gathered a wide array of credible and valid data for their research. Very Good (8-7) The problem is clearly defined and stated. The hypotheses are logical and feasible. The analysis of data shows the researchers ability to see patterns and trends from data gathered. There are very little inconsistencies in the conclusions the researchers arrived at and they provided clear recommendations. Very Good (4) The researchers provided a clear background about the problems and conditions they researched. The researchers gathered plenty of data with very little question in credibility and validity. Good (6-5) The problem is defined but some parts need to be clarified. The hypotheses are logical but may not be feasible. Most of the data gathered were analyzed but the analysis is not as comprehensive as expected. There are some inconsistencies in the conclusions and recommendations the researchers arrived at. Good (3) The researchers provided enough background about the problems and conditions they researched. The researchers gathered sufficient data, some of which have questionable credibility and validity. Adequate (4-3) The problem needs further explanation to be defined. The hypotheses need some refinement in order to be logical and feasible. Only some portions of the data were analyzed, with the analysis in need of more depth. Needs Improvement (2-1) It is not immediately clear what problem is being discussed in the paper. The hypotheses need major refinement in order to be logical and feasible. Poor (0) There is no statement of the problem. There are no hypotheses given.
