Subject Organisation
Session: Credit Points Contact hours per week: Lecture Times & Location: Tutorial Day, Time and Location can be found at: Spring Session, Wollongong Campus 6 credit points 1 hour lecture, 1 hour Computer lab, 1 hour Tut Mon 13:30 14:30 PM 19-G016 http://www.uow.edu.au/student/timetables/index.html
Students should check the subject's web site regularly as important information, including details of unavoidable changes in assessment requirements will be posted from time to time via e-Learning space http://www.uow.edu.au/student/. Any information posted to the web site is deemed to have been notified to all students.
Subject Description
The systematic design of networks includes requirements gathering, requirements analysis, the development of logical design and the conversion of the logical design to a physical design. The use of architectures will provide students with a high level framework that consists of addressing and routing, performance characteristics, security and network management. The subject will teach students to relate this framework to basic data communication techniques developed in previous subjects as well extend their knowledge of addressing and routing and performance characteristics.
Subject Objectives
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Explain the architectural approach to network design, including the relationships between each subarchitecture 2. Systematically produce a logical design for a complex computer network 3. Convert the logical design into a physical design specifying services, protocols and hardware.
Graduate Qualities
Graduate Qualities are the aspirational qualities that students will progressively develop through their learning experience at UOW. These Graduate Qualities are not achieved in a single subject their development is an ongoing process across an entire program of study. This subject will contribute to the following Graduate Qualities: - Informed - Independent Learners - Problem Solvers - Effective Communicators - Responsible - Team Work - Innovation & Design Further information can be found at: http://www.uow.edu.au/informatics/sisat/current/SubjectInformation/UOW051055.html
Attendance Requirements:
It is the responsibility of students to attend all lectures/tutorials/labs/seminars/ practical work for subjects for which you are enrolled. It should be noted that the amount of time spent on each 6 credit point subject should be at least 12 hours per week, which includes lectures/tutorials/labs etc. Satisfactory attendance is deemed by the University, to be attendance at approximately 80% of the allocated contact hours. Students MUST attend their allocated tutorial unless they have the written permission of the subject coordinator.
Method of Presentation:
In order to maximize learning outcomes, it is strongly recommended that students attend all lectures.

Notes on Assessment:
All assignments are expected to be completed independently. Plagiarism may result in a FAIL grade being recorded for that assignment. Individual contributions to group work will be assessed. This means that different team members may receive different marks according to their contribution to the group assessment task. Submission of Assessment Items Hardcopy of each asessment will be submitted to the tutor and returned during the tutorial. Assessments 4 & 5 will be available to collect from the Subject Coordinator's office. All late work to be submitted online via UOW e-Learning and personally to Subject Coordinator. Refer to the Assessment Guide and detailed instructions of assignments on e-Learning for further information and marking guides. All special consideration applications must be lodged through SOLS. All submissions must be accompanied by an Assignment Cover Sheet. This is available in hard copy from the student enquiry centre in building three or online at http://www.uow.edu.au/informatics/sisat/current/index.html To successfully complete the assignment, students are required to form groups of four from the same ISIT212 Subject Outline, Spring Session 2010 Page 3
tutorial group. Students who are unable to place themselves in a group should contact the lecturer before week 3 and they will be placed in a group. The specifications provided for the assignment contain not only the technical information but also detailed instructions for the manner in which the assignment is to be presented. These presentation details reflect current practice in industry and, as such, contribute to the final assignment mark. Students must conform exactly to the presentation instructions or they will be penalised. This is particularly true of the deadline for delivery. The purpose of the project diary is to assist the students in the evaluation of themselves and the other members of their group at the conclusion of the assignment to ensure that marks are allocated fairly. Students who by their own evaluation or by the evaluation of a majority of the other group members have not made a fair contribution will have their marks adjusted accordingly. Principle Assessment Criteria for all Written Work The principle assessment criteria for all written work are based on: 1. The extent to which the question has been correctly interpreted and answered; 2. Originality; 3. Demonstrated understanding of the main concepts of the course; 4. Awareness of the literature; 5. Clarity and structure of written work and oral presentations 6. The level of communications skills demonstrated. Final Examination Students will answer a range of questions to demonstrate comprehension, understanding, critical analysis and application of knowledge relevant to this subject.
Technical Fail
To be eligible for a Pass in this subject a student must achieve a mark of at least 40% in the Final Examination. Students who fail to achieve this minimum mark & would have otherwise passed will be given a TF (Technical Fail) for this subject.

Supplementary Exams
Supplementary Exams will be dealt with in accordance with student academic consideration policy (http://www.uow.edu.au/about/policy/UOW060110.html) 9.2 Timing of Supplementary Exams. While the School normally grants supplementary exams when the student does not sit the standard exam for an acceptable reason, each case will be assessed on its own merit and there is no guarantee a supplementary exam will be granted. If a supplementary exam is granted, you will normally be notified via SOLS Mail the time and date of this supplementary exam. You must follow the instructions given in the email message. Please note that if this is your last session and you are granted a supplementary exam, be aware that your results will not be processed in time to meet the graduation deadline.
Plagiarism
When you submit an assessment task, you are declaring the following 1. It is your own work and you did not collaborate with or copy from others. 2. You have read and understand your responsibilities under the University of Wollongong's policy on plagiarism. 3. You have not plagiarised from published work (including the internet). Where you have used the work from others, you have referenced it in the text and provided a reference list at the end ot the assignment. Students must remember that: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students are responsible for submitting original work for asssessment, without plagiarising or cheating, abiding by the Universitys policies on Plargiarism as set out in the University Handbook under University Policy Directory and in Faculty handbooks and subject guides. Plagiarism has led to the expulsion from the University.
