Melocoton, CPA MMPA 2 MMPA 223 Ecology of Public Administration (Reaction Paper July 20, 2013) Another One Down Filipinos serving as drug mules in China China is known for administering the capital punishment on people caught illegally possessing 50 grams worth of drugs or more. Executions are now usually carried out via lethal injection. We understand life is precious, but what good is saving them if they unjustifiably and unhesitatingly dare to commit the crime of drug trafficking for one reason or another? Take for instance the recently executed Filipina drug mule. She was reported to have allegedly traveled 18 times to China carrying heroine. She may not have victimized Filipinos and made their lives miserable in exchange for a lucrative payoff, but just the same she was destroying other peoples lives all these times. Despite strong warnings and adequate counseling by government authorities of our overseas workers regarding carrying illegal drugs, still some would go for it and take the risk. And when they are caught, arrested, convicted and meted a death penalty, their personal problem becomes our governments problem, too. The questions that are entering my mind for such situation are as follows: Are these peoples lives worth saving? Is it right for our heads of government to be begging for reprieve or pardon or commutation to life imprisonment every time an execution is scheduled? Are drug traffickers the kind of people we should be asking God for intercession, when they are the same people that willfully commit the crime and knowingly admit the woe it causes the users and their families? Why would government interfere? Is government justifying that what our compatriots are doing is right and legal? This is sending wrong signals to our OFWs. Government should stand their teachings that giving warning and counseling over the dangers of illegally possessing drugs is trying to inculcate self-discipline or selfcontrol in the person. It is not because of poverty that people are driven to be couriers of illegal drug or drug mules. It is our lack of self-discipline and self-control that we become victims of our own foolishness. For the Philippines to be respected, as a country, we should learn to respect not only other countrys culture, but also their laws. In the same manner, it is necessary that if Chinese nationals or other nationalities commit a crime in our shore, that government should not hesitate to implement the full force of the law and make sure that our police authorities will not get corrupted in any way, shape and form.
