Is America Still The Land Of Opportunity?


Overview
As a post-reading assignment to The Great Gatsby, students will use social networking tools to collaborate with each other to answer the question "Is America still the land of opportunity"?

Objectives
Students will be able to * work in a group of four to create an audiovisual response to the prompt provided. * communicate effectively through social media tools. * take a stance on a debatable topic and provide evidence to support claims.

Online Tools
Flickr Group (www.ickr.com/groups/apbrowniepoints): Students post visual arguments that help answer the class prompt. MixedInk (www.mixedink.com): All students create a MixedInk account and collaborate on their group essay. VoiceThread (www.voicethread.com): Each group creates a VoiceThread account to record their presentation for sharing. Twitter - Class Account (www.twitter.com/AP_BrownSquad): Twitter account established for the class to post links, ask questions, and share photos.

Activity
1. Hold brief class discussion for how America was or was not the Land of Opportunity for the characters in The Great Gatsby. 2. Ask students to get into groups of four. 3. Students access the class Flickr account (www.ickr.com/groups/ apbrowniepoints). Each group must contribute 10 or more visual elements to the Flickr group that shows examples of how America is or is not the land

of opportunity. Students should upload photos they take. They may upload photos they take in their own community, photos of newspaper headlines, or images they found online that support or refute their claims. 4. Students create a MixedInk (www.mixedink.com) account. One member of the group serves as the administrator and to create a group page. All members of the group conduct research and team up to write one effective argumentative essay. 5. Students register for a VoiceThread account (www.voicethread.com). 6. Once the group has agreed on the nal essay, they are to go back into the Flickr account and nd images that will enhance their presentation. These images will be saved and uploaded to the VoiceThread presentation. 7. Students will record their argumentative essay over the images selected. Students are required to share this presentation. Make sure all settings allow for sharing. 8. When the audiovisual presentation is complete, each group must share the link to their VoiceThread on the class Twitter page (www.twitter.com/ AP_BrownSquad). 9. All students are required to visit the group projects posted and add comments to two or more of their peer's work.

Assessment
Create and provide a rubric that contains all elements of the lesson. Formal assessments used to evaluate the VoiceThread presentation. Create a checklist that ensures students have completed the Flickr, MixedInk, and Twitter requirements. Participation grade awarded for responding to peer VoiceThreads.
