Analysis Of A Ferry Motions

INTRODUCTION
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to how fast an object is moving. Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance. A fast moving object has a high speed an covers a relatively large distance in a short amount of time. Contrast this to a slow moving object that has a low speed. It covers a relatively small amount of distance in the same amount of time. An object with no movement at all has a zero speed.

Velocity represents the direction and speed of a moving object. Velocity is a vector quantity that refers to the rate at which an object change its position. As such, velocity is direction aware, when evaluating the objects velocity, one must keep track of direction.

Resultant velocity of the ferry is the actual direction and speed of the ferry. Addition of vectors can be used to determine the resultant velocity in a system of coplanar velocities. This is used the solve navigational problems where the resultant velocity of a ferry is the vector sum of the course velocity and the water. Velocity experienced by the ferry. Hence, for the ferry, its ground velocity ( resultant velocity) is the sum of addition of the course velocity and water current. North

The problem that we are faced in this assignment is to find course on which the ferry must steered to travel from jetty A to jetty B and jetty B to jetty A, with the different current flow and the time taken for the journey, t. We are ask to calculate and t by using the different formula that we got in question 1 and 2. Otherwise, we are also ask to construct schedule for the journey from jetty A to jetty B and jetty B to jetty A with different current flow.

Conclusion: we can conclude that the time taken for the journey for the current flows from west to east and east to west is similar. The current flows does not change the time taken for the journey. We also can conclude that the answer of the course on which the ferry must steered to travel from jetty A to jetty B is (+) and (-) sign is only the difference. Otherwise, in vector when a vector have opposite direction the value is negative.

2(a). The objective of the question is to write down the course on which the ferry must be steered to return from jetty B to jetty A and the time taken for the return journey in case where the current flows from west to east and the case where the current flows from east to west.

3. To calculate the time taken for any ferry for current flow from west to east from jetty A to jetty B, we are using the result that we obtain in question 1 which is: ( ).............................. ......................................... Where = the course that ferry must steered to travel from A to jetty B t = time taken, in minutes for the journey from the graph given we take any value of V and substitute it into , then after we get the , we substitute it into t to find the time taken for the journey. The t that we go we must state in correct to 2 significant figures. V value for current flow east to west is negative and current flow from west to east is positive. a) if V = 2, substitute V into : ( ) = 54.26 Substitute = 54.26 into:

= 55 minutes From the calculation that I shown , we need to construct a table of schedule for current flow from west to east from jetty A to jetty B that contain the V, t, , embarkation, departure, arrival and disembarkation. Note that the duration of embarkation and disembarkation at each jetty is 20 minutes.

We must use the following formula that we got in question 1: ( )

The way to calculate the time taken for any ferry from jetty A to jetty B is by using substitution that I shown just now , but the only different is the V value which is for current flow from east to west the V value is negative.

We must use the following formula that we got in question 2: ( )

The way to calculate the time taken for any ferry from jetty B to jetty A is by using substitution that I shown just now. We just take the value of V because current flow is the same which is west to east. To find the time taken for current flow from east to west from jetty B to jetty A is by substitution that I shown just now. But the V value is the same as the current flow from east to west from jetty A to jetty B because the current flow

is the same which is east to west. The formula that we are using are: ( )
