Dubai Municipality completes key wastewater projects

Talib Julfar"] Drainage and Irrigation Department of Dubai Municipality recently announced the completion of five strategic projects for wastewater treatment and irrigation in the emirate. In a press release, Eng. Talib Julfar, Director of Drainage and Irrigation Department said the most important of the five is the 300,000 m3/day Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), the second phase of which was completed in October 2010. The odour treatment plant was also completed to prevent the emission of unpleasant odours in the surrounding areas, he added. The Dh1.55 billion project, which has helped ease the pressure on the Al Aweer STP, is linked to other key projects including major pumping stations and pipelines to transfer sewage from different parts of the city to the plant as well as the transfer of treated irrigation water to different areas. The Jebel Ali STP also includes a plant to produce fertiliser from sludge. Other important projects that were completed are as follows: Sewage pumping station and pumping lines rising to the X1 Plant at a cost Dh580 million, completed within the stipulated period of three years Sewage pumping station H and pumping lines rising to the Jebel Ali STP completed at a cost Dh191 million. Pumping station H is located near the 4.5 intersection on Sheikh Zayed Road and has a capacity of 2,000 l/sec. Sewage pumping station X1 and pumping lines rising to the main Jebel Ali plant at a cost of Dh586 million. X1 is located near Arabian Ranches Roundabout and has a capacity of 9,600l/sec. one of the five strategic projects constructed at a cost of Dh258 million, said Julfar. Other important irrigation projects completed so far include: Extending the main irrigation lines in different areas in Dubai at a cost Dh310 million. The project also included a pumping station on the Dubai - Al Ain road for the delivery of irrigation water up to the Jebel Ali - Al Hebab intersection. Main irrigation lines for Aweer Farms at a cost of Dh103 million. The project, which covers an area of 1,346 hectares, involved the construction of a pumping station with a capacity of 500 l/sec. Main irrigation lines on Dubai Bypass Road at a cost of Dh60 million. It includes the construction of 12.1- kilometre long irrigation pipeline network of 1,400mm diameter. The 135,000m/day capacity project aims to deliver treated water for irrigation purposes in projects developed along the line and also improve the pressure in the old network.
