A Course Description ‘The Horizon seminar isa special series of topical seminars meant to explore subjects at the leading edge of contemporary psychology which are special interest to students and faculty. It may be repeated for credit. The subject ofthis horizon samara is Lacanian Psychoanalysis. B Goals of the course Under Understanding Self and Others: To see the link between Lacan's work and clinical practice To invert the relationship between selfand Other To understand the importance of language in the creation of the subject, To understand, at a very basic level, some key concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis, To appreciate reading without immediately tying it to the already known ‘The goal of Sef-Tranafomnation ‘The understand the lures of identification ‘© To experience the difference between the subject and the ego, kmowing that the experience is an aftereffect of the subject, even as experience-drawing on jouissance, is the ground of the subject ‘© To geta basic idea of Lacanian ethics of the subject. C. Evaluation & Expectations 1. Come to all of the classes. To accommodate two guest speakers, classes will be moved the week of September 28 and the week of November 30°. © On the week on September 28, we will meet on Saturday, October TBA. Yael Goldman will discuss clinical work using Lacan. All class ‘members should have at least three clinical questions based on their clinical work or emerging from the class. Yael isa clinical psychologist ‘who has trained with Bruce Fink and is active on the Lacanian scene in North America and in the UK. ‘+ Rather than November 30, we will meet Friday December Third is late ‘moming or early aftemoon, Patricia Gherovici will discuss case presentations by class members. Patricia has trained in Argentina and is an intemationally known Lacanian, known inside and outside of Lacanian circles for her clinical skills. She isa supervising analyst of Aprés Coup in New Yorke 2. A formal contribution to the class or ten paper to be arranged with instructor by the end of September 3. Doall readings 4. A short final exam (three pages of your writing at most) based on explication of quotations. Exam is open book ‘You will be graded on participation and on the final presentation and exam. You will be graded in terms of the goals of the course, see above D.
