In Remembrance:
FCWC holds vigil and counselling session after fatal crash on
Highway 6
Hundreds of people, consisting of friends,
family and community members attended a vigil at
the Manitoba Metis Federation Hall in Thompson,
in honour of the two youth who lost their lives on
Highway 6.
On July 6, a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old
boy were killed when the vehicle they were travelling
in rolled over on Highway 6. The car accident
happened just before 6:30 a.m. as the 2008
Chevrolet Impala was moving southbound. Four
other people were sent to hospital with serious
injuries following the accident.
According to RCMP speed and seat belt use are
considered factors in the crash.
On July 9, the NCN Family and Community
Wellness Centre offered its services to the friends of
the two teens, to help them deal with their grief. It
prepared by debrieng 30 staff members with CSIM
training. During the afternoon session, 27 youth
participated in the counselling and debreing service
offered by the centre.
Throughout the evening vigil, about 210 people
attended the MMF Hall.
The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Family and
Community Wellness Centre hosted the vigil in
collaboration with its Counselling Services
department.

working as the Coordination for the Zummer Adventure
Camp Program for children and youth this summer.
Its my second year studying at the University of
Saskatchewan, taking my bachelor of education degree, with
the Indian Teachers Education Program. Once I complete
my 4-year degree, I plan on getting my masters in special
education as well.
When I proudly accomplish my greatest desires, I plan
on coming back to my community and teaching here, for I
have promised the children and youth I would come back to
be their teacher. I also want to see where else life may take
me, somewhere new to explore around the world.
It has always been my passion to become a teacher and
to be a wonderful role model because, I will be the window
through which many children will see their future. The future
belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams, I
want to be the rst step that the children take when I teach
them, and I want them to know theres no limit to the
wonderful possibilities life has to offer. I know this because
Ive taken many steps in following my dreams and I will not
stop climbing until I reach the top.
I love working with children and youth, after I
graduated high-school I worked as an early childhood
educator at the Jean MacDonald Treasures of Hope Daycare
Centre. I also worked as a teachers assistant at O.K.
Elementary School working with the resource rooms, as a
substitute and a kindergarten assistant.
I have always been involved with youth councils,
committees and societies. I love being a leader and a strong
representative for youth to inspire and empower change,
passion and hope for the future.
Feel your dream in your heart, see your dream in your
mind, then live your dream, for everyday of your life.

SUMMER FESTIVAL
Meet and talk with a dietitian or nutritionist in your community for
information on nutrition and a balanced meal plan. A healthy balanced way of
eating leads to a healthy body. It is healthy for you, your family and relatives.
You can help your body use insulin easier if you:
Lose weight
Exercise
Stop eating foods that raise blood sugar, such as simple carbohydrates.
Simple carbohydrates break down quickly into sugar or glucose, but they
lack bulk and do not signal our brains when we have had enough. This leads to
over eating of these items and the production of too much sugar in our blood.
Some examples of simple carbohydrates are:
Jam
Raw Sugar
Jelly
Soda pop
Complex carbohydrates are more health promoting and satisfying. Because
they are bulky and brous, complex carbohydrates are lling without being
fattening and have proven to be important in the digestion of fats and proteins.
They are also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.
Some examples of complex carbohydrates are:
Vegetables
Fruits
Grains
Beans
What types of foods are best for me?
Vegetables Fresh, Frozen, Canned
Carrots
Turnips
Tomatoes
Broccoli
Spinach
Beans
Peas
Unsweetened vegetable juices

Zummer Adventure Camp 2013
A child and youth camp-
By Hope Linklater
The Zummer Adventure
Camp of 2013 is a child and
youth summer program with
weeks of fun, creativity,
adventures and shared memories.
Not only is it fun, it is also a
program where we teach the
children and youth, safety, how to
follow rules, and how to respect
one another.
Participants also learn how to
make creative arts and crafts as
well as go on outdoor adventures,
experience traditional teachings
and learn how to cook and about
kitchen safety. On our last week
with the kids we will be going on a
camping trip. Staff will create a
scrap book of our summer fun at
the Zummer Adventure Camp so
we can share the memories with
our family and friends. On the last
day of camp we will have one big
fun day for the kids, parents and
families.
The average daily attendance
is about 30-40 children. The ages
range from four to 16-years-old.
Our staff-- Bria Beardy, Serena
Linklater, Tammy Spence,
Richard Bunn, Ronald Lewis and
Johnathan Brightnose and myself,
Hope Linklater-- coordinate the
program as a team. We plan our
weeks and days together.
The program is a safe and fun
environment for all. It has been
such a great experience and we
are so grateful for this wonderful
opportunity to work and be
surrounded by so many amazing
children. Thanks to the parents,
family, friends and the community
who support us and make this
Zummer Adventure Camp
program a great success.
Quotes from the kids:
Im so happy youre back and with us
again Hopie.
This is so much fun, cant wait for
tomorrow, and the next day, and the next
day.
Are you gonna do this every summer?
I love it here Hopie and Im having so
much fun!!
The camp runs from July 15
to August 27. For more
