Club Quiz
On November 30th the club will be holding a Quiz Night as a fundraiser for the senior squad and also as a bit of a Christmas celebration before the clubrooms close for the building of the second story. It will be a fun entertaining evening marshalled by quiz master Mike Roke with plenty of raffles, spot prizes, auctions, and of course an open bar with food supplied. We have been well supported with prizes for the evening including things such as: Samsung S2 Smart Phone, PSP, 12month Norton Security Software Licences, Bluetooth Headsets, Jabra Sports Headphones, Vouchers from Hanger Bar, Vouchers from Luscious Food Store, and Vouches from Fuze Caf to name just a few of the prizes that will be on offer. We are selling tables of 7 but seating is limited and will based on a first paid first served basis. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from Chris Reid. The Baggy Blue

While the start of the season always brings eager players, the introduction of the Baggy Blue has brought extra excitement for the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. The Baggy Blue has been the regular talking point at trainings and games as people fight to become the very first player to don the Baggy Blue. What is the Baggy Blue? The Baggy Blue is a baggy WCC cricket cap, like the Australian baggy green. The baggy blue can only be earned through good performance by reaching predetermined targets. It was brought in as an incentive for players to consistently perform and contribute to their teams, but also to bring prestige to the club. Targets: Premiers

Bowlers: 30 Wickets Batsman: 500 runs All Rounders : 20 wickets / 300 runs Wicketkeepers: 30 dismissals / 250 runs Reserve, As, Bs and Cs Bowlers: 25 Wickets Batsman: 400 runs All Rounders : 15 wickets / 250 runs Wicketkeepers: 30 dismissals / 250 runs Those who have reached one of these targets will be presented with their Baggy Blue at the club rooms the following week from earning it. So far the race to be the first to the baggy is highly competitive with several players already a third of the way there to a baggy.

Prems Start Encouragingly
The season is well on its way. The Premiers are sitting just outside the top three with a two win - two loss record. The opening day saw defeat at Freyberg Park against East Coast Bays. Highlights of that game were Sheahan Huris impressive spell of 3-25 off 9 overs. Aaron Jeavons battled away to 72, but unfortunately nobody could stay with him and the boys fell short by 38 runs. After a rain enforced postponement against Takapuna , the boys went to Keith Hay to take on Eden Roskill. Eden Roskill won the toss and elected to bat. They started brightly, but through some tight bowling from Robert Evans-Moore (2-33) and Sheahan (1-26). The Batting Powerplay was to be the difference as we took three wickets and stifled Eden Roskills hopes of a competitive total. From 125 for four, Eden Roskill crumbled to be 160 all out with Praneel Hira picking up 5-20. After a run-out in the first over, Mukesh Patel (25) and ringin Chris Fenner went about there work finding the boundary regularly. When Mukesh was dismissed with the score at 65, Aaron (40*) joined Chris and they cruised to the target inside 26 overs. Chris ended on an aggressive 92 off 83 balls. The following week, the Prems had a double header at home North Shore (Saturday) and Takapuna (Sunday). We won the toss electing to bowl first. We picked up an early wicket through Aaron, but North Shore consolidated and we could not pick up another until the score reached 182. Despite some good bowling, the Shore pair had batted with great tempo. They found the boundary and ticked over singles when they needed to. We took some wickets towards the end, but North Shore had a total on the board. Chasing 239, we got off to a poor start. At 3 for 17, a partnership was needed. What followed was a couple of small ones, but nothing to get on top of the game. Although we remained up with the run-rate throughout the chase, we lost wickets regularly to fall short by 49 runs. This was another game we should have won. Blayne Fraser fought valiantly and was the last man out for 74. It was important that we left that result in the past and that is exactly what we did. Takapuna won the toss and elected to bat. The National Club Champions had every right to be confident. Robert (2-31) had other ideas. He bowled what one player described as the best loosener in world cricket to clean out Takapunas opening batsman. It set the tone for the day and Takapuna were quickly in trouble. Despite losing wickets courtesy of Sheahan (3-52) once again, Takapuna continued to play aggressively and were eventually bowled out for 128. Scott Curtis made quick work off the tail claiming 3-16. Opening the bowling, Aaron followed his 1 for 17 off ten overs again North Shore with 1 for 14 in another tight ten overs. The openers started positively putting on 79 for the first wicket. Vaidik Raj set up a comfortable chase with a positive 59 off 81 balls. The other batsmen ensured the job was finished as we reached 130/4 with 16 overs to spare. It is no doubt the upset of the season so far. It is a promising start, but the East Coast Bays and North Shore defeats may come back to hurt the Prems chances of progressing. With three games to play after Christmas, the boys will need to show a similar intensity to that shown in the Takapuna match. .

Reserves Have Tough Start

The Premier Reserves have had an unsettled start to the season. Unfortunately, the club has struggled for consistent numbers and this has meant a fair bit of player movement. It is what it is and on the whole those who have stepped in have performed admirably. The Reserves will resume the one-day competition after Christmas with a one win - two loss record. A new look side took on Kumeu Sri Lanka at home in their opening match. Kumeu won the toss and elected to bat eventually finishing on 268/9. It was always going to be a challenging total, but one that could be chased. Despite several starts, Waitakere lacked a match-defining partnership and fell short by 116 runs. A double-header was on the menu for the next weekend with games against Birkenhead and Ellerslie. On Saturday, the boys travelled out to Birkenhead War Memorial and started the weekend brightly putting on 286/7. Kevin Samson and Hayden Pye-Redfearn led the way with 89* and 58 respectively. When we returned to the field, early wickets were taken and the middle order seized upon. Angelo Carnie picked up a personal best 4-48, while Paul Whynn and James Baker grabbed two wickets each to ensure a 90 run win.

Reserves continued..
On Sunday, at Orakei Domain, we won the toss and thought best to go with the strategy that had won us the previous game. Batting first, Kevin (51*) once again led the way, but wickets fell regularly. Once again, it was a case of batsman getting starts. A tenth wicket partnership added valuable runs as Paul Whynn (40*) and Tes Taliauli (21*) batted out the remaining overs. Defending 237/9, we once again took wickets regularly reducing Ellerslie to 116/6 with Sean Ansell taking 5/45. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as Ellerslie won it at the death by three wickets. After the first three rounds of competition the WCC Senior A and B sides have made a strong start to the season, both with two wins and sitting 2nd respectively. Suburbs out for 155, Ben Carmody, with 3/17 from his nine overs, has been the in-form bowler for them so far this season. Waitakere started off in positive fashion with Josh Carmody hitting 32, but the rest collapsed to be 125 all out. The third game saw the Senior Bs taking on Birkenhead. Waitakere batted first and looked shaky the whole way through managing to scrap together 142 off their 40 overs with Scott Dixon coming in at 9 and making 29 not out. Waitakere then let rip and demolished the Birkenhead batting line up bowling them out for a pathetic 53 runs. Ben Carmody continued his good form with 5/10 off 6 overs, taking his wicket tally to 10 at this early stage in the season. Senior Cs have had a tough run of luck this year so far with three losses from their first three games. Their first game saw them take on rivals Eden Roskill. Roskill put on 286 off their 45overs with Carl Layton the pick of the bowlers taking 4/47. The Waitakere run chase never not going eventually being bowled out for 153. Phil Jones top scored with 36 not out. Waitakeres second game saw them take on Auckland University. Uni took to Waitakeres bowlers reaching 282 off their 45 overs. Waitakere put up a good run chase and were looking threatening but eventually ran out of overs finishing up on 247/5. Ross Watson 69 not out and Scott Morgan 66 not out putting on a 147-run partnership for the 6th wicket. Their latest game saw Waitakere travel up to Hibiscus Coast. Waitakere batted first and unfortunately couldnt continue from their batting display the game before, being rolled for 120. The Waitakere bowlers worked hard and were close to pulling off an upset with Mark Bhan taking 3/28 off his 9 overs. Hibiscus eventually stumbled through to win by 3 wickets.

Senior As Bs and Cs Wrap Up

The Senior As have a change of captain with Keryn Carberry taking over the reins for the 2012/2013 season. With a young side this year, the Senior As headed to Grafton and quickly showed their ambitions as title challengers by bowling Grafton out for 117. Angelo Carnie was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/29 and seeing himself promoted up for reserves the following week. WCC eased home to win by 7 wickets thanks largely to Aaron Denyer (56*) and a solid 26* from Stanton Govindasami. The second game against Ellerslie was one to remember when Waitakere batted first blasting 289/8 off their 45overs. Heath Moore chipped in with 41, but it was Corey Todd who lit up the fireworks blasting a 42 ball century and finishing on 121 off 53 balls. Ellerslie were on their way to the target until captain Keryn Carberry came into the attack and took 5/39, sealing a 36-run win. In their latest match Waitakere took on Auckland University and had them 6 for 25 until a 140-run partnership took the game away, with Uni reaching 172 off their 30 overs. We lost wickets regularly and eventually fell short. The Senior Bs also have a new captain this season with Dan Parsons taking over the job. Their season started against Cornwall and made a great start reaching 197 off their 45 overs. Josh Carmody anchored well making 44 and captain Dan Parsons bullied the bowling around scoring 63. Waitakere always had the game comfortably won with all bowlers chipping in. Chris Jeffries the pick of the bowlers with 3/17. Waitakere had a blip in their second game with a loss to Suburbs. Player Profile Sheahan Huri
Sheahan has made an impressive start to the season. Coming on at first change in the first four one-day games, he has taken crucial wickets with his leg spin. Sheahan is also a capable middle to lower order batsman. He is also never far away when it comes to sideline banter and storytelling. Age: 22 Nickname(s): Kanye. Proudest cricket moment: I have two. Winning the Marryatt Cup final with Kelston Boys High School in 2005. And the second, winning the National Under 17 title with Auckland. Best cricket advice: Patience is a virtue. Best life advice: Patience is a virtue. What do you do away from cricket? Graphic Design. Goals for the season: Hmm a tough one, Im not one to set statistical goals, because what statistics fail to explain is context. In saying that though, 30+ wickets would definitely go hard. Favourite Movie? Why? Very tough one, but whenever this question is asked, Guy Ritchies Snatch always comes to mind, so Ill roll with that. Entrance Song: Hmm, Kanye Wests Cant Tell Me Nothing or Jay-Zs Public Service Announcement, bangers. If you could be someone else, who would you be? Why? Drake, Heartbreak Drizzy, Shopping Bag Drizzy etc. Arrogance and vulnerability all under an umbrella of honesty is something that basically everyone should strive to be. Also, who wouldnt want to be a rap star? Special mention to Kanye though, very much the same reason. The Tom Hellaby Trophy has now started and Sheahan will no doubt be required to bowl some extended spells if the Premiers are to compete for two-day promotion. We will be hoping he can add some valuable runs also.
