UIIT : AN INTRODUCTION
UIIT Shimla is a premier institution of excellence in Science and Information Technology that develops professionals and leaders of high calibre imbued
with values of entrepreneurship, ethics, and social responsibility. It is functioning under "the Executive Council" of the Himachal Pradesh University since
year 2000. It admit students from all over the country to the Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology and imparts training to make them
competent, motivated Engineers, Leader, Thinker, and Scientists. The academic program of UIIT is also approved by the All India Council of Technical
education.
UIIT Shimla has established itself as a nodal centre for engineering and technical education being imparted through the different engineering institutions
affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University. It provides academic and curriculum input to the all engineering and technical institutions affiliated with the
University.
LOCATION
The University Institute of Information Technology functions in the University Campus, Summerhill, Shimla in the second basement floor of Netaji Subhash
Building, Summerhill, H.P. University. The Construction of the New and Independent Building has already started.

ACADEMIC FACILITIES
LIBRARY
Institute over the past 8 years has created a dedicated library exclusively for the usage of students and faculty of UIIT. It has acquired a good collection of
books related to Information Technology and allied areas. An amount of more than 12 lac Rs. has been spent to purchase latest editions of quality books
needed by the students. It has about two thousand books. A good reading space has also been provided for the students. Library also subscribes to about
20 computer magazines/Journals besides daily newspapers.
Institute Library has plans to create a special section of e-books, CD-ROMs and other resource material to provide a resource bank of share wares and
other learning material. Students also have an access to the main library of the University. Library is connected with networking facility through Wi-Fi and
CAT 6 cable.
COMPUTER LABORATORY
To provide a rich hands on experience to the students a state of the art computer laboratory worth more than 85 lac rupees has been Created. Computer
Laboratory is fully networked and the facility of networking is extended to classrooms and other labs as well.

Note : Students are encouraged to own and bring their own Laptops with WiFi connectivity, which is an essential tool for IT students to do
projects, Laboratory exercises, assignments and to access internet.
INTERNET CONNECTIVITY
University has been provided by University Grant Commission, a dedicated leased line of 2 Mbps (1:1) dedicated bandwidth as part of UGC Infonet for
higher education. University Institute of Information Technology is part of the Campus Wide Optical Fibre Network on which internet facility is available on
24 x 7 basis.

UIIT has a dedicated dynamic website www.hpuiitshimla.org which provides complete information about UIIT on which useful information for
students, parents and public is available including student records, schedule of curricular activities, time table etc. Parents and students are encouraged to
use this window of information about UIIT.

IT SOCIETY
To develop leadership qualities among students, an IT Society run and managed by students has been setup under the banner of Information
Technology Student Association (ITSA). It is also responsible for holding technology events, seminars and other extra curricular activities of
interests to students. It also provides a platform to students for interaction with IT Professionals.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance in theory classes and practicals is compulsory. The rules of the University as quoted below are strictly adhered to. Any student who fails the
attendance condition, will not be allowed to sit in the examination. Condonation in attendance will be as per University rules.
As per Ordinance No. 13.3 (a, b, c)
a) For every hour per week of subject shown in the schedule of teaching, there shall be atleast ten (lectures+ tutorials)/ practicals/ drawing classes
during the semester. A student shall be eligible to appear in the examination only if he has attended atleast 7.5 (Lectures+Tutorials)/ practice drawing
classes during the semester of the classes held as mentioned above. The attendance shall be certified by the Director, University Institute of
Information Technology/ Principal of the Engineering College concerned.

b) Director of Institute of Information Technology/ Principal of the Engineering College as the case may be, will have the power to condone the shortage
of attendance upto 10 per cent only per subject on the merit of the case.
c) A candidate who does not fulfill the attendance requirements in any subject will have to repeat the course of instruction in that subject.
Attendance record of the students is updated at the end of each month on the UIIT website (www.hpuiitshimla.org).
Absentee fine: A Student will be charged Rs. 5 per class/lecture for absenting from a theory or laboratory class.

PRIZES AND SCHOLARSHIPS


A) Scholarships : Student will be granted four merit scholarships one for each year of B.Tech course in UIIT. The amount of the scholarship will be Rs.
500.00 per month. The basis on which merit scholarship is to awarded are given below :
1. For Ist year : on the basis of result of +2 examination passed by the candidate admitted in the first year. The duration of the scholarship will be one
full academic session i.e 1st July to 30th June.
2. For IInd year : B.Tech part I result (semester I and II taken together). It will be for the duration of one full academic session i.e 1st July to 30th
June.
3. For IIIrd year : B.Tech part I & II result (semester I, II, III and IV taken together). It will be for the duration of one full academic session i.e 1st
July to 30th June.
4. For IVth year : B.Tech part I, II & III (semester I, II, III, IV, V & VI taken together). It will be for the duration of one full academic session i.e 1st
July to 30th June.
B) Prizes : Students will be given prizes in each year for standing First, Second and Third in the Semester examinations on the basis aggregate marks scored
in the semester examination. The prizes will be as given below:
1. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester I.
2. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester II
3. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester III
4. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester IV
5. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester V
6. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester VI
7. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester VII
8. Three prizes (I, II & IIIrd prize) on the basis of B.Tech semester VIII
First prize will be given in the form of books costing Rs. 1000.00. Second prize in the form of
books costing Rs. 750.00. Third prize in the form of books costing Rs. 500.00. Students will be
given coupons of the respective amounts for choosing books of their choice in the market.
C) General rules for the award of Scholarships/Prizes:
i) All awards shall be made on the basis of Board/ University normal annual/semester examinations only. No award shall be made on the basis of result
of the supplementary examination or on the basis of the result of a reappear case. Further, provided that there should be no gap in the academic
career between qualifying examination and the year in which the admission is sought for.
ii) The award shall be made to the candidate or candidates who passes or pass every part of the qualifying examination in the first attempt at which he
or they were due to appear, i.e. the candidate (s) getting a reappear in any of the semester (they are due to appear) of the qualifying examination,
will not be considered at all for the award of the Scholarships/ Prizes.

iii) Scholarships/ Prizes, shall be awarded for the period the students are required to pay tuition fee and shall be discontinued if the candidate does not
show satisfactory attendance or fails to appear in the examination in which he was due to appear or gets a reappear in any paper or on unsatisfactory
conduct. The Scholarships/ Prizes so vacated shall be awarded to the next eligible candidate of the same academic session.
iv) If a Scholarship/ Prize falls vacant, the same may be awarded for the remainder of the term to the next student available in order of merit in the
respective session of the class concerned.
A Scholarship/ Prize awarded by the Institute shall be awarded only to candidate studying in University Institute of Information Technology.

The Institute has a very effective placement cell. The institute has been able to place a good number of students of the First batch & Second batch

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
Courses Offered
The UIIT imparts instructions for Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology (B.Tech.(IT)).
Duration
The duration of Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology shall be of 4 years spread over 8 Semesters on full time basis for fresh entry candidates and
6 Semesters for Lateral Entry candidates with admission directly in 2nd year.
ADMISSION CRITERION (FRESH ENTRY)
ELIGIBILITY
a) The eligibility is 10+2 examination passed or equivalent, with Physics, Mathematics and any one of the other elective subjects of a Board/ University
established by law in India with 50% marks or equivalent grade. For SC/ST candidate's marks for eligibility will be 45% marks or equivalent grades.
b) In case of candidates studying in University/Board/College or School in a foreign country, the eligibility/qualifying examination will be the same as
recognized equivalent to 10+2 by the University or the Association of Indian Universities with 50% marks in three subjects as detailed above in (a). For
SC/ST candidates eligibility will be 45% marks or equivalent grades.
c) The candidate should not be, more than twenty-two years in age as on 1st July of the year of admission.

ADMISSION CRITERION (LATERAL ENTRY)
For being eligible to seek admission through lateral entry scheme, to an Engineering Degree programme at the second year/third semester level, a
candidate should fulfill any one of the following conditions:
a) A student should have acquired a diploma of 3 years (after 10+2 or matric) from Himachal Pradesh State Board of Technical Education or equivalent
with minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Information Technology or Computer Science Engineering.
b) A Candidate must have passed the Degree in Science (B.Sc.), with Mathematics and Physics as subjects and with minimum of 60% marks in
aggregate from Himachal Pradesh University or any other University/Institutions located in Himachal Pradesh.
c) A candidate seeking admission under sponsored category under the lateral entry scheme should have same eligibility as given above in (a) or (b).
The candidate should have minimum of 3 years experience in Government sector /Public Sector Units /Industry related to Information Technology/
Computer Science Engineering. The candidates are required to produce the experience certificate from the employer along with (i) requisite leave of 3
years, (ii) salary statement/ form 16-A of salary for the last three years from the employer, at the time counseling.
Provided further that the seat(s) remain vacant under lateral entry scheme from the bonafide Himachali candidates, then vacant seat(s) will be filled up
from the candidates, who have passed the prescribed diploma or B.Sc. from other University/ Board with conditions of (a) or (b) mentioned above, after
exhausting all possibilities of filling these seats from bonafide Himachali cabdidates.

NUMBER OF SEATS
FRESH ENTRY (Ist SEMESTER): 60 +6* Seats
BASIS OF ADMISSION
For admission to all seats, an entrance examination will be conducted by the University. Separate merit lists for candidates passing 10+2 from
Himachal Pradesh and Open to all Candidates will be prepared.
*Note : 6 Seats are 10% of the sanctioned intake approved by the AICTE for first year in B.Tech(IT) over and above, to provide
concession/ programme fee waiver for women economically backward, physically challenged meritorious students in the
ratio of 2: 3: 1 as per AICTE norms.
LATERAL ENTRY (IIIrd SEMESTER): 06** Seats + Any seats remaining vacant at IInd year level
BASIS OF ADMISSION
For admission in Lateral Entry Scheme, a joint merit list will be drawn from the eligible candidates as mentioned in eligibility for Lateral entry.
**Note : 6 Seats are 10% of the sanctioned intake of the first year in B.Tech(IT) over and above. Out of the allowed intake of 10% of
the sanctioned seat under the lateral entry scheme, 1 seat i.e. 20% of this intake be admitted under the category of
sponsored candidate.
RESERVATION OF SEATS
A) The reservation of seats will be 15% and 7.5% of the seats shall be reserved for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes candidates, respectively. Further
3% of total seats are reserved fro Physically Challenged (PC). Physically Challenged candidates will have to produce a certificate from competent health
authority of minimum disability of 40% at the time of counseling, to avail the reservation in PC category. Roaster applicable for this will be followed for
deciding seats for SC, ST and PC category separately. Reserved seats in all the categories shall be filled as under:
i) 40% of the seats for admission shall be open for all the candidates irrespective of the institution from where they have passed their qualifying
examination.
ii) 60% of the seats shall be filled out of the candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from H.P.S.E.B. or schools located in Himachal
Pradesh.

B) The remaining 74.5% seats shall be filled as under:
i) 40% of the seats for admission shall be open for all the candidates irrespective of the institution from where they have passed their qualifying
examination.
ii) 60% of the seats shall be filled out of the candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from H.P.S.E.B. or schools located in Himachal
Pradesh.

WITHDRAWAL OF ADMISSION BY THE CANDIDATE AND REFUND OF FEE
As per the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission a student admitted to the course can withdraw
subject to following conditions:
(i) In the event of a student/ candidate withdrawing before the starting of the course, the wait listed candidate shall be given admission against the
vacant seat. The entire fee collected from the student after a deduction of the processing fee of not more than 1000/- (One thousand only) shall be
refunded and returned by the institution/ University to the student/ candidate withdrawing from the programme.
(ii) Should a student leave after joining the course and if the seat consequently falling vacant has been filled by another candidate by the last of date of
admission, the institution will return the fee collected with proportionate deductions of monthly fee and proportionate hostel rent, where applicable.
FEE PAYMENT SCHEDULE
For all categories of students :
7th of July to 21st of July of the academic year for odd semesters (i.e. I, III, V, VII)
7th of December to 21st of December of the academic year for even semesters (i.e. II, IV, VI, VIII)
Important Notes:
v In case the fee is not deposited till the due date, late fee of Rs. 5000/- will be charged for the next fifteen days, failing to meet this dead line will
automatically cause the name of the student struck off from the rolls.
v Fee once deposited shall not be refunded.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION (FRESH ENTRY)


Those candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria will be called for Entrance Examination. The Entrance Examination will consist of two papers, each of two
hours duration. In each paper, candidate will be required to answer 100 questions of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) types detailed below.

There will be four examination centers for the Entrance Test, two in Himachal Pradesh and two outside H.P.

ADMIT CARD
Admit
v card for sitting in the entrance examination will be issued only to those eligible candidates who have submitted their application forms complete
in all respect before or on the last date of submission notified by the University.
Normally, admit card should reach the candidate well in time. However, if it is not received one week before the entrance examination, it will be the

responsibility of the candidates to contact the office of University Institute of Information Technology (UIIT) and get a duplicate admit card issued.
Without the valid admit card, candidate will not be allowed to enter the examination hall.

The admit
v card is to be retained by the candidates as he/she may have to produce the card at the time of counseling and admission or at any time
during the admission process, when asked for.
DECIDING MERIT
The Merit shall be determined on the basis of aggregate number of marks obtained in the entrance test by the candidates and a merit list shall be
prepared for B.Tech(IT). Candidates, in B.Tech(IT), obtaining equal aggregate marks in the competitive examination shall be according to marks obtained
by the candidates in Paper-1 of entrance test and Paper-II in that order in the Entrance Test. Even if there is tie in inter-se ranking after exhausting the
above procedure then the candidate(s) older in age will be given preference.
COUNSELLING
There will be a counseling system to allot the available seats in order of merit drawn category wise by the University. The eligibility of the candidates will
be determined by the counseling committee to recommend the admission to UIIT. The first counseling will be held for those candidates who are called by
the University through registered letters at UIIT as per the schedule. In case of unavoidable circumstances, the candidates who are not able to appear in
person, may depute an authorized person to convey his/her consent of course, i.e. B.Tech(IT), with a letter of authority or intimate in writing his/her
refusal for joining the said course, failing which the merit of the candidate will be cancelled. The committee will also prepare a waiting list and as soon as
vacancy arises next candidate(s) from the waiting list will be allotted seat(s) in the UIIT.
If the candidates fails to receive letter for counseling due to postal delay or some other reason he/she should personally contact the office of the
University Institute of Information Technology before the date of counseling notified in the schedule.
Important Notes
If the
v candidate who is unable to produce/bring original certificates at the time of counseling his/her candidature will be rejected
without any notice there and then by the committee constituted for counseling for B.Tech.(IT) course.

MECHANICS
Unit and dimensions, displacement, velocity, acceleration, kinematics in one and two dimensions, projectiles, circular motion, concept of relative motion.
Newton's laws of motion, concepts of inertial and uniformly accelerated frames. Force, spring force, frictional force, and gravitational force. Work, energy
and power, momentum, conservation of momentum and energy. Linear and angular momentum, simple harmonic motion.
Universal law of gravitation, gravitational potential and field, acceleration due to gravity, motion of planets and satellites in circular orbits, Kepler's laws.
System of particles, Center of mass and its motion, elastic and inelastic collisions. Rigid bodies, moment of inertia, parallel and perpendicular axes
theorems, moment of inertia of simple geometrical shapes, i.e. uniform ring, disc, thin rod, cylinder. Angular momentum, its conservation, torque,
equilibrium of rigid bodies.
Hook's law; Young's shear and bulk modulus. Principle of buoyancy, pressure in fluid, streamlined flow, Bernoulli's theorem.
Wave motion, concepts of amplitude, frequency and phase. Longitudinal and transverse waves, superposition of waves, progressive and stationary waves.
Vibration of strings and air columns, resonance, beats, velocity of sound echo, Doppler effect.

HEAT AND THERMODYNAMICS
Thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases, ideal gas laws, absolute temperature, specific heats and their ratio, Isothermal and adiabatic processes.
First law of thermodynamics. Calorimetry, latent heat, equivalence of heat and work, Heat conduction in one dimension, convection and elementary
concepts of radiation. Stefan's law of radiation. Wien's displacement law, Newton's law of cooling.
Elements of the kinetic theory of gases. Pressure and temperature of an ideal gas.
ELECTROSTATICS
Coulomb's Law, electric field and electric potential, lines of force, capacitance, dielectric constant, parallel plate capacitor, capacitors in series and parallel.
Energy stored in capacitor, charging and discharging of capacitor.
CURRENT ELECTRICITY
Electric current, Ohm's law, series and parallel arrangements of resistance's and cells. Kirchoff's laws and applications to networks. Heating effect of
current. Biot-Savart's law, force on a moving charge and on a current carrying wire in a magnetic field, magnetic moment of a current loop, effect of a
uniform magnetic field on a current loop, moving coil galvanometer, voltmeter, ammeter. Growth and decay of current in L-R and C-R circuits.
Electromagnetic induction, Faraday's law, Lenz's law, definitions of self and mutual inductance. A. C Generator, LCR circuit with A.C. Phasor diagrams and
L-C oscillations.
OPTICS
Rectilinear propagation of light, light reflection and refraction at plane and curved surfaces. Total internal reflection and critical angle. Deviation and
dispersion of light by a prism. Thin lenses, Spherical aberration, microscope, telescope.
Wave nature of light, interference. Young's double slit experiment, fringe width, elementary concepts of diffraction by a single slit.
ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Radioactivity: alpha, beta and gamma radiations, law of radioactive decay, decay constant, half- life and mean life Photoelectric effect. de-Broglie
wavelength, Bohr's theory of hydrogen- like atoms. Production of characteristic and continuous X-ray. Atomic nucleus, binding energy and its calculation.
Fission and fusion processes, energy calculation in these processes.
SEMICONDUCTOR PHYSICS AND ELECTRONICS
Elementary concepts of metals. Insulators and semiconductors, Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, p-n junction as an amplifier (in common emitter
mode) and an oscillator with quantitative applications.

ALGEBRA
Algebra of complex numbers, modulus and argument, triangle inequality, nth roots of unity. Theory of quadratic equations and quadratic expressions,
relationship between the roots and coefficients, sign of a quadratic expression, greatest and least values of quadratic expression. Arithmetic geometric and
harmonic progressions, sums of arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions, infinite geometric series, sums of the squares and cubes of the first n
natural numbers. Mathematical induction, permutations and combinations, Binomial theorem for a positive integral index. Determinants of order two and

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
(i) Please note down the application number in your personal records and save it for future reference.
(ii) This form is to be processed by an optical mark reader (OMR) machine. The machine picks up only blue/black ball pen marks. Therefore, fill up the
forms using dark blue/black ball pen only. Further, your photograph, signature and address are going to be scanned by a machine which reads
only dark black images, and only from the specified areas of the form. Therefore, please ensure that you write your address only inside the boxes.
At the specified place paste only a good colour photograph.
(iii) First write out in block capital letters the required information in the boxes (o ) wherever provided, and then blacken out the appropriate bubble
underneath each letter. Please refer to the filled up sample form in the prospectus.
(iv) Option filled by you this form cannot be changed at a later stage.
(v) Please note that your parent/guardian's name, and your date of birth should be exactly the same as in your High School or your first

Select two convenient centers out of the four given in the form, as per the order of your preference first be entered under I and the second under II.
