Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature and Studies This chapter places the current study into the context

of previous, related research. It consist of the conceptual framework of the present study, the critique of both related studies and literature that are related to the present study, as well as the operational definition of terms that are based on observable characteristics and how it is used in the study. Conceptual Framework Academic performances of BS Accountancy students are affected by many factors. One of these factors is discussed in this research, which is sleep deprivation. The concept of the researcher is in a graph as follows:

Academic Performance Of BSA Students

Negative Effects Of Sleep Deprivation Positive Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

Sleep Deprivation

Based on the graph, the researchers concept is that sleep deprivation is one of the factors that affect that affect the academic performance of some BS Accountancy students. These effects are theoretically classified in which they can be positive or helpful, or negative or unaccommodating. The researcher also

believes that there are more negative effects out of sleep deprivation than its positive effects. Related Literature There are literatures that testify that sleeping is needed by the body as it works mentally and physically through everyday life. It has been proven that it revives the bodys metabolism and consciousness as it undergoes its cycles. But not every individual share the proper amount of sleep. According to McCullen, the amount of sleep between individuals varies accordingly to their kind of lifestyle. Working people generally have the least amount of sleep as extra salaries and wages from over-time work and graveyard shifts becomes necessary. Followed by college students, who usually finish their assignments and homeworks in an inappropriate time. This proves that not all people achieve the right amount of sleep, in accordance to the kind of lifestyle theyre living in. These lifestyles usually lead to sleep deprivation and lack of sleep that brings different disadvantages. According to Mercado, busy people often sleep very late, unaware that it results to certain disadvantages in their fields of work and living. Examples are sheer exhaustion, impaired coordination, blurred vision and more health problems. According to Crowley, when teenagers stay up late and sleep in over the weekend, this behavior resets their daily clock to a later time, This resetting can push back the brain's cue to be awake on Monday morning for school. As a result, teens may feel worse and have poor performance in school at the beginning of the week. Essentially, teenagers may be giving themselves jetlag over the weekend even without getting on a plane. This habit is way too inappropriate for the body that it brings too much inconvenience. Drastic effects to performance may be acquired when sleep is reduced from its natural level. Related Studies

Aside from literatures, there also studies that can relate and testify to this research. According to Dumas, there are 3 smart things about sleeping late; You may need more sleep than you think, research by Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders Center found that people who slept eight hours and then claimed they were "well rested" actually performed better and were more alert if they slept another two hours. That figures. Until the invention of the light bulb, the average person slumbered 10 hours a night; Night owls are more creative, artists, writers, and coders typically fire on all cylinders by crashing near dawn and awakening at the crack of noon. In one study, "evening people" almost universally slam-dunked a standardized creativity test. Their early-bird brethren struggled for passing scores, and; Rising early is stressful, the stress hormone Cortisol peaks in your blood around 7 am. So if you get up then, you may experience tension. So you better get more sleep than you think. Furthermore, it is attested that depriving the body from its rest isnt very helpful to our health. According to Baribal, humanity is a diurnal organism. By forcing it to go nocturnal, the body is going against its nature, and the body is placed in far more stress. Also, on the school topic, people who do not sleep at night, but do so during the day, tend to have more trouble focusing throughout the day. And much like with work. They will always be under performing in school during the day as well. Also, according to Chelle, sleep deprivation can have some of the same hazardous effects as being drunk. Getting less than 6 hours a night can affect coordination, reaction time and judgment, they said, posing "a very serious risk. Drivers are especially vulnerable, the researchers warned. They found that people who drive after being awake for 17 to 19 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level of .05 percent.

These studies vouch for the different effect of sleep deprivation to the body and performance of an individual. Significance These related literature and studies helped the researcher in this study as it sets as a back up for summary, conclusions and other statements that will be declared by the researcher. Texts, quotations and researches found in this chapter will be supporting the assertions that will be found in following chapters.
