Pioneers
Retiring

for

Christ

Edited by Ed & Jean Kelsey, Missionaries Vol. IV, No. 1 Honolulu, Hawaii January, 1969

Missionaries

Honored

Pictured above are Owen & Shirley Still (left) and Colonel & Lila Nicholas, retiring missionaries who were honored at a dinner meeting, cecently, of the Christian ministers
and their wives on Oahu.

PIONEER MISSIONARIES RETIRE

Owen & Shirley Still are pioneer miss onaties here in the Islands and ara respon!?ible for gt^rt nj,; aeven of thten existing congregations on Oahu.

During his 57 years in the ministry, Brother Still has

started churches in Georgia, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii,

and Japan. In all, mote than forty churches have been started, plus an undetermined number that resulted from
evangelistic work in Korea while 'hey were serving as missionaries in Japan. Most of these congregations ate still in existence today. Unfortunately communications with the Korean congregations was lost years ago due to

the political unrest there and it is not known what, if anything, is left of that work. It is certainly safe to say
that the lives and the eternal destinies of many, i^any

thousands of people have been affected either directly ot

inditectly by the influence of Brother St ill and his wife.

One of theit finest accomplishments and the one about

which they ate most happy is the fact that they reared
four children who ate now all in "full-time" Christian
service

In addition to all these accomplishments and a full life of Christian service, and in spite of strokes, heart attacks, and ill health which has plagued them both for years,

Brother Still, at age 76, and his wife, though tetited.

have not quit working for Christ. They are now living
in Sunset Beach. Hawaii neat two of theit daughters and, as membet'Christians of the church there, occupy them*

selves in canvassing, petsonal wodc, and other activities in the name of Christ. Praise God fot people like this 111

A SOLDIER'S PROMISE IS FULFILLED

)uUe a few years ago, while serving in Japan, Major Jebse

Nicholas, thei\ a member of {''e Disciples uf Cht::'.ti hao
Wt for some time that there was a 'je'tcr way for Chi. itans to serve Christ than undiJt the bondage of donom-

Inntion^ism.

Then he was introduced to Owen Still,

a missionary to Japan from some of the non-denominational

.-.-ongregations of the Christian churches/churches o Christ.

Brother Nicholas found in Brother Still's work what he

had always felt to be the Bible way and Brother Still

found in this slodier a willing and able servant for the Lord whom he immediately put to work.

It was during this time that Brother Nicholas promised

God that if he could stay in the Army long enoqgh to retire

that he would go to Wahiawa in Hawaii and start a church. Sure enough when he retired, he wrote to Brother StiU, by this time a missionary in Hawaii, that he was preparing
to come out and would Owen get the ball rolling toward

starting that new congregation? Brother Still, along with

some others, started the congregation, so that when Colonel
Nicholas arrived a few months later, he found a congrega

tion ready to minister with !

He and his wife have since stuck with it and built it up

through the years until his health forced him to retire in 1968. Like any good soldier, though, he would not

quit his post until he had a replacement. God answered

Their prayers through ihe Marshall family.

Like the Stills, the Nicholases have not quit but merely
redirected their efforts into other channels of service

for Christ. They still live in Wahiawa and serve in what ever capacity they are needed.

DANIEL KELSEY ACCEPTS CHRIST

Daniel had wanted to do this for some time but we felt

his understanding to be lacking. We taught him and then left it up to him. For some time after we indicated our

approval, he would look at me during the invitation as if

to ask, "Now?" Much as I wanted to answer, I would

look away It had to be HIS decision! Then one Sunday morning, he finally took the big step and brought a great deal of joy to us all. It was indeed a thrill to immerse my own son iii obedience to the commandment of out Lotd!

ANOTHER BAPTISM

Mitchell Matsunaga, was also immersed for the remission of his sins recently. This is a teenage boy who attended
church and Bible school for some time now.

He had heard series of sermons that Charles and I had done on the

plan of salvation. The week following Charles* sermon on Baptism, Mitchell's patents called saying he wanted to be baptized. He has since been very faithful in his attendance. Please piay that both of these young people
will be useful servants for Christ.

PICTURE REQUESTS

We have had a number of requests for family pictures so ate having another batch made. If you want one just let us know. They ate &ee.

PRAISE THE LORD !!!

After 15 years the Palolo Valley church of Christ finally made the last payment on their mortgage. This was made possible by God working through the Christians both here and on the Mainland. We certainly are thankful to all
concerned. There is still much ahead to be done. The

will be saying mote about this as plans develop.

Yes, "Revival Fires**, the television piogtam featuring

Evangelist, Cecil Todd along with a host of other talented Christian people, is being aiied over KHON-TV (Channel 2) here in HonoliJu as well as two repeater stations on Maui and Hawaii. Hopetully enough f'.nds can be sub scribed locally to pay the station foi the time ($90 per week Cecil furnishes the video tapes free). If ycu are interested in helping on with project, v/rile and we'll let

Responses to the program are naturally slow, at first, but it is hoped that new contacts will be made with people needing the Lord. By the program being broadcast to two of the outer islands as well, it is not impossible to reach someone there resulting in another church being planted. With this in mind, I am once again working toward obtaining my Private Pilot's License (this had been delayed because
funds were needed elsewhere).

This newsletter is going to be very brief because there just is not enough time to prepare articles with pictures etc. Our annual financial report is ready but has to be verified by our fowarding agent. Hopefully it will be printed next month. There are a zillion things that must be done about this time of the year, not the least of which

are four or five annual reports to be filed with as many government agencies. This is the price we pay for being incorporated as a non-profit organization. The advantages are worth it though. Add to this calling, counseling, HelpLine, Civil Air Patrol (acting chaplin) and other phases
of the ministry and we really get bogged down sometimes. We would't trade places with anybody in any other pro fession in the world though. There is no better master anywhere than the Lord Jesus. A complete report on out activities will be published with our annual eeport.

PRAYER REQUESTS

**Ms J. This lady was contacted, as a. result of my chaplin

activities in the Civil Air Patrol, She and hex daughters are catholic but realize there is a better way. Piay for

them and for us as we try to unfold God*s Word unto them.

**C.A.P. After several months of working with a squadron of Civil Air Patrol cadets, I am beginning to get close

to these young people. Interviews with them has revealed a great spiritual need. Some ate receptive, others aren t.
Please pray that I will always do my best in presenting
God to these eager cadets.

**HELP LINE. Several people are contacted each month in the course of my counseling activities on Help Line. Most of these contacts are only by telephone and I don't even know theit names. Occasionally we have the oppor-: tunity of counseling in person. Of course, we always

try to present Jesus as part of the solution to their problems.

Please pray that God will guide us.

Pictured above is our forwarding agent, JoAnn Dedmon. She and hex husband have been extremely invaluable to

us. JoAnn keeps our books, makes out receipts and does an unbelievable amount of typing for us. She does this

all without charge because she loves the Lord. Please pray that she will not become discoutaged when we get

"too busy" to communicate legulaily. Also ptay that

together, the Dedmons, the Taylors, the Kel^eys, and you,

will be an effective team for Christ in establishing many

churches after the New Testament pattern in the Pacific.

SPECIAL

ANNOUNCEMENT

We have an urgent matter to bring to your attention. As has already been mentioned, on June 15, we are hoping to have the first service of a new congregation on the
Windward side of Oahu. This will more than triple the

amou^it of money we s^nd each month (mostly due to

tent costs which are expected to tun OVER $300 per
month similar homes would tent for much less than

half this in your area and often well under that). Also I have been substitute teaching to supplement out personal income. This has already begun to decrease as the end of school draws neat and will cease completely in June

thereby increasing salary expense in the mission budget.

The mission MUST increase its support. Now several
non-Christian friends receive this report and we naturally

don't expect them to accept this responsibility. However for out Christian friends we have this message; PLEASE, if you are not already doing so, consider making a monthiv or even weekly, contribution to this cause. You wo^ld

be surprised how far even $1 per month would go if giveT> regularly. Just think how far five, ten, or twenty or more

dollars would go when given regularly. Please give this matter your prayerful consideration- and let us know your
decision. Remember when you step out in faitli, you have God on your side. ; Thank yoy.

P.S.

All gifts are appreciated, large ot small, and all

ate tax deductible if made payable to Pioneers for Christ.

KAILUA,
96734

HAWAII

That is the temporary address of the newest church in

the Islands.

Kailua is a rapidly growing community on

the windward side of Oahu. There are close to "^8,000 people in the Kailua area with over 12,000 in the immediate

area in which we will be working. Since making this decision, construction has begun on a development in the
same area which will result in several thousand new homes.

This should be a tremendous opportunity for a young con

gregation looking for people.

The house we've rented has a large 17M x 25^ family room in which to hold services, 3 large bedrooms and a
laige living and dining area plus two baths, with one off

the family room for church use. It is ^finitely not a fancy

house but is roomy and presentable and in a presentable neighborhood. Rent is only $250 p er month and utilities ate expected to tun about $50 Per month. I never though^*

I would see the day that I thought that was a batgin, but
it certainly seems to be the case here.

Last month we brought to your attention out bad financial

condition. Now that the house has been rented, there

is a DEFINITE need to increase out support IMMEDIATELY! Add to this the need to drawing a tegular salary to meet family needs and it becomes a very real problem. It is not out intention to use this paper to continually ask for support of this mission but we do feel that you want to be made aware of these needs. Please pray about the possibility of making a FAITH-PROMISE today. We have We have faith that God will provide our needs. Do you have faitli enough to be the instrument of His blessing?

CHRISTIAN VISITORS Recent Christian visitors to the Islands have included

^ose ficom Indiana, Illinois, Georgia, and Viet Nam. Some

were just able to visit with us on the phone as they passed through, while oth^cs were able to visit with us in person. If you are planning to visit Hawaii soon, why not plan some time in Christian fellowship with us. We do enjoy that very much.

PRAYERS AND LETTERS

You know, whenever someone mentions prayers and letters

a lot of people think you are asking for money. Money,

of course, is very important, but equally important is your prayers and your letters of encouragement. Every
once in awhi le we receive a letter from some Christian.

&iend telling us of his prayers and offering words of encouragement to us. These letters ate just as important to us as financial support. Please pray for us and let liis

know about your prayers.

AIPRECIATION FOR PRINTING HELP

THANK YOU LITTLETON, COLORADO

This month Pioneers foi Chiist was pdnted by tiie Littleton Christian Chutch in Littleton, Colorado. They plan to do this each month. We are very grateful for this and pray that they will be blessed fcom their concern about missions. It is certainly a blessing to us. THANKS AGAIN.

DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS IN HAWAII?

Already we have begun to receive names fiiom people who who have &iends or relatives in Kailua. If you know of people who are living in Kailua or anywhere else iii Hawaii, please let us know. We cannot guarntee they will turn to Chrisc, of course, but we will certainly call
on them if we can find them.

We dislike writing about financial matters but i^ must be done. Due to the extremely high cost of living in Hawaii, we need four or five hundred dollars per month to adequately provide for our family. Add to this mission needs in the amount of $400 per month and we have a total monthly need of $900. However the mission's total receipts have only averaged about $450 per month so far this year. Of course, mission expenses must be paid FIRST before we can draw any salary. Each month brings
more bills unpaid or else needed services or materials gone without because of insufficient income. This is especially reflected in out salary as follows: Jan-130,

Feb-75, Mar-100, Api-40, May-NONE, June-NONE, JulyNONE. I've been substitute teaching part time and taught
summer school for six weeks this summer. But this not

When we moved to Kailua, $1,000 had to be borrowed from a special fund to pay the rent and meet other es-

penses because of a lack of funds. This special fund was the aircraft fund and is now depleted. This money must be paid back so that we can meet out obligations in this regard ! In addition enough regular support must be secured to meet the higher costs here in Kailua (triple

P.S. Those who receive this paper and are not Christians

naturally have no obligations in this matter. But we do urge those who are Christian to pray about this and do whatever they feel God wants them to do. Mahalo.

LAST

MINUTE

NEWS

At a congregational meeting June 13, it was decided to have Wednesday evening Bible Study in the home of Ray & Helen Downing. Ed will begin witb a study of
the Book of James.

Our summer helpers decided not to remain with the work.

So the pictures and story previously announced will not appear Please pray that they will be directed as they
seek to serve Christ.

OUR

PRESENT

PROGRAM

Out ptesent ptogiam consists of two basic paxts: Long Range and Shoit Range. The Long Range part is simply
out preparations for our future work here in the islands. It consists of paying for an airplane to facilitate trans

portation between the islands, and obtaining my pilot's

license for the same purpose. In fact the purchase of

the plane ($1600) will make the license considerably cheaper compared to the cost of renting aircraft. A picture of the Mission plane will appear iti a later issue.

The other part of our Long Range program consists of trying to assemble a small but meaningful library to be used in connection with training Christians for more com* plete Christie service. (We have no Bible College iii the Islands and not much hopes of one being started iii
the neat future).

The Short Range part of our program consists, of course, of the work that we are now doing here in Kailua. As
of this writing, we have four members in the new con

gregation. They are the father of a local family, Jean, myself, and our son, Daniel. We expect the test of the
local family, mentioned above, to make a definite commit
ment soon. In addition, there at e four other families from which someone has attended one ox more times. These

admittedly will requite a great deal of cultivation, but there is never-the-less a potential present. So far, we've met for four weeks with 20-20-23-23 as attendance figures. There has been someone present for the first time in each
service so fat.

PIONEERS FOR CHRIST IS NOW IN THE AIR AS WELL

Alieady we know of people on other islands who may be interested in weekly Bible studies. This could eventually provide the nucleus for another church. It is entirely possible that this is another open door. It certainly seems to coincide nicely with the recent acquiring of a plane

by the mission. The plane is an old one to be sure (a

1946 Taylorcraft), but recently rebuilt and in good condi
tion. If the Bible studies can be set up we will probably

fly over to hold a midweek study and return the same

evening. This would enable us to continue to build up the Kailua work. By the time the Kailua work develops

to the point that we can leave it, a strong nucleus should

formed at the other location. This method works well ill other fields and we believe that the plane will make

it possible to overcome the transportation problem (over

water) and make it work here as well. Please pray that

we don't spread ourselves too thin but at th6 same time can realize a continuing progress in our work for Christ
here in the Pacific.

NAME THAT PLANE

Sevecal suggestions have already been received.

What

is youis? As soon as a name is chosen, we will announce it in this paper. Incidentally, watch for a picture of the plane with more information about it next month!

TOOLS STOLEN

Two tool boxes containing nearly two hundred dollars

worth of hand tools, which are vital to us, were stolen
earlier this month. Because we must do our own mainte

nance on the car and bus as well as the church and house,

we must replace these tools. Donations of mechanic's tools, Carpentar's tools, or electrician's tools (or money donations to buy same) are badly need. Perhaps this would make a good project for your group.

CAMERA NEEDED

For two years people have been asking for slides and we couldn't send any because we had no camera. Recently a fellow missionary gave us one but we still could not take pictures inside. Now a Christian friend has let us have his camera for well under half price. He is also willing to wait for his money so $70 is needed for this purpose. It is a Kodak Retina Reflex and comes equipped with an f-2 regular lens, plus wide angle and 2X telephoto lenses. Already we have begun to take pictures fox distribution to Mainland churches. Does your group need a project? Helping us to pay for this camera would make a good one.

JULY RECEIPTS

July recsipts were $754. This is wonderful! For several

months now we have been getting further and further behind

as we keep pressing forward to carry out out planned program. While July didn't by any means solve all of
financial difficulties, it did help a great deal. Please notice the remarks below, concerning financial needs fot the mission. (P.S: In July we only drew $55 from the mission fot salary^ The test was used to meet opera

ting expenses and to help pay mission debts).

FINANCIAL NEEDS FOR MISSION

As we mentioned in out July newsletter, $1000 had to be

"borrowed** from the aircraft fund to meet the increased

expenses incurred by out move to Kailua, such as tent,

deposits, church furnishings, and operating expenses. It is imperative that we replace this money immediately!

Will you help? If you can, send an extra gift fot this putpose. Please let us heai from you right away. Mahalo.

ALSO

NEEDED:

REGULAR

MISSION

SUPPORT !!!

Recent re-evaluation of our program and its needs indicate that eleven to twelve hundred dollars per month would be needed to conduct the program properly. However if we could even receive $500 per month for Service Link and $500 pet month fot Living Link, we could double the amount of time spent on the Lord's work here. We cannot continue to spend most of our time at secular employment and hope to get the work done that must be done here for the Lord. Please help by giving REGULARLY to this worthwhile work. If you ate already doing this, please pray that others will also. Thank you.

CAMP IS PAU !!!

Tents ate down, cots and tables ate folded and another

camp season is pau (finished). Ed slept in a tent with

with the Jr. boys but had to teach summer school in the daytime. Jean worked with the Jr. gids again this year.
Ed was also camp manager for the year. It was not a

difficult job though because every person did their part very well. Four young people accepted Christ and were baptized in Intermediate week. The high school kids
said their week was the best ever; which says a lot for their dean, Paul Marshall, minister at the Central Oahu Christian church in Wahiawa. The Isuzu bus also played an important role in camp again this year.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS

Tools needed to replace those stolen
Camera ($70 needed)

Folding Chairs (AT LEAST 25 more needed)

SEND

YOUR

MINISTER

&

ELDERS

TO

HAWAII

You'll be glad that you did. We need more fihanci^ support badly but feel that it would be well worth fore going some of *:hat support if you could send your minister and elders to Hawaii for a visit. They could see what we are doing first hand and by their own experience could gain a better appreciation of the need for the work and what it's going to take to get the job done. Plan on having them s'-ay at least two weeks and if poss: sible a month or mote. We would provide free housing for them as well as opportunities for them to share in the work. Such a visit would keep your congregation
informed as to what the needs of the Hawaii^ work are

and is bound to reflect itself in your added

souls here in the Pacific.

concern for

This offer is open to you and your congregation whether or not you are presently supporting us or even plan to. We feel such visits can accomplish only good for the Lord's work and is certainly a worthy expenditure of your

congregation's mission funds. Write us about scheduling.

THE

SEEDS OF

RESTORATION ARE

SOWN AGAIN

Recently we were privileged to have as guests in our

home three students from a non-denomiiiational Bible

institute iii Canada. They were a part of a singing group which had toured the orient this summer singiiig for Christ and needed a place to stay on their way through Hawaii. These young men had vneer heard of the Restoration Movement but the opportunity to discuss restoration principles and the New Testament church was made. One of the young men was from Canada and knew of several congregations there desiring fellowship with other congregations but not wanting to become a part of a denomination to do so. This young man seemed favorably impressed with the principle of restoring the New Test ament church. It is hoped that he wiU continue to think and pray about these things and will be influential in

leading others to a New Testament position. We armed him with a list of congregations in his province which
are known to hold a New Testament position. Also dis

cussed at length were the plan of salvation and the Lord's supper. Please pray that these seeds wiU grow and that this young man's life can be used in a great way toward acheiviiig Christie unity by returning to the Scriptures.

SCHOOL HAS STARTED

Another sdiool year is upon us and three Kelsey children are in school. David is in 2nd grade this year, Tammy is in the 3rd and Daniel in the 5th.; They were all quite

anxious for school to start as they like school very much. Carl won't start kindergarten until next year as he won't be 5 until January. He already does simple adding and reads a few "sight words.';' He really likes to learn new things. Hope this desire remains constant throughout
his life.

SLIDES NOW AVAILABLE

We now have a set of slides showing something of our woik here in Hawaii. Pictures include, among other

things, aeri^ views of the area we serve, the home beiiig used for the church, the mission plane^ and the Kelsey family, as well as evidences of non-christi.^ religions
so prominent iii Hawaii.

If you would like to show this set of slides to your con gregation, write and let us know. Write as far ahead as possible giving the date (and alternate) desired so
that we can schedule them. For quicker service, contact

our Forwarding Agent, Mrs. Jo Ann Dedmon at 6402 N. Woodlynn, Tampa, Florida 33614. They're ftee, of course. If you have written i h the past, please write again. We had a list of fDlks wanting slides but now that we have
the slides, filially, we cannot locate the list.

DISPLAY AVAILABLE

We now have a display available if you ate planning a Faith-Promise rally, missions conference, or other event

where such a display would be desireable.

It is not all

that we would like it to be because we have not yet been

able to get all the materials. It does show something of our family, our work, and our plans however. If you wish to use it please write our Forwarding Agent, Mrs. Jo Ann
Dedmon, 6402 N. Woodlynn, Tampa, Florida 33614. It's ftee, of course. Write as far in advance as possible.

KELSEY FAMILY PICTURE

Some time ago, we announced family pictures as being available. Several requests were received and our supply was exhausted. If you want one please contact out for

warding agent, Mrs. Dedmon again. She now has a good supply. As soon as a more recent picture is available,
we will announce if in this paper^

Due to ciicumsteinces beyond ouc control the pictuie of the plane cannot be printed this month.; Heie is the story as it was written. We will try to print the picture next mo.

As we promised last month we ate including a picture

and story about the mission plane. It is a two place Taylotcraft (1946 vintage) costing only $1600 but will serve to iy Ed and one passenger between islands for
the purpose of conducting Bible studies etc. So far Ed has been able to fly it enough to meet the minimum time requirements for his Private Pilot's License. All he

needs to do now is develop his proficeincy to an ac ceptable level and take the flight test. Out biggest problem now is time. It is difficult to take an adequate amount of time off each week for just practicing. We
also 'should add that we have on hand some possible leads for Bible studies on the outer islands. Please pray that this will beat fruit. The following information may be of interest to you:
1600 Price of plane

**2000 Borrowed from bank (eirtra amount was intended

for additional equipment in plane) 10(K) (apptox) of above amount had to be used to secure
h o u s e in Kailua & meet other expenses 1000 Balance left iii Aircraft Fund after move to Kailua

** 600 Borrowed from individual (Bill Warren) to complete

purchase of plane. In exchange for this we extended to Mr. Wairen flyirig privileges. Mr. Warren also gave Ed some free unoffici^ flight instruction.
2600 Total Indebtedness (see note below)

**NOTE: This means that the mission now has a total

indebtedness of $2600. (1000 of which was necessary because of the move to Kailua). ; This will pose no problem if we can secure and maintain tegular support. If not,
then serious difficulties will occur. We want into this

venture on faitli. Won't you join us by making a financial committment to God on faifh that He will make it possibl^

AIRBORNE MERCY MISSION

Ed recently had opportunity to pilot the mission plane on a search mission for two island men missing on a
catamaran. Cost Guard, Civil Air Patrol, and individual

pilots participated in the search.

Unfortunately the men

The

weren't found (There's a lot of ocean out here).

fact that so many put forth so great an effort was a tre mendous comfort to the families of the missing men.

While this certainly is not the primary purpose of the mission plane, it was good that the church could serve community in a time of emergency such as this. Ed was also scheduled to participate in another search for two men who had to ditch a light plane at sea. He had to teach school that day, however, and the men were
found before he arrived at the airport.

BIBLE STUDY

Several attempts weie made to interest out people in studying the Bible together. Efforts were made to have
midweek meetings, cottage-type meetings in the home, and Sunday school classes at church. For one reason or another, either prior committments, lack of interest, poor attendance, or lack of teachers, seemed to prevent

getting any of these programs off the ground. Out latest

effort in this regard seems to be enjoying some measure of success. ; As of this writing we have met three times and had good response each time.

On Sunday morning at church we worship together in singing and the Lord's Supper and theninsteadof a sermon,
we have a Bible study. The study should last 6 to 12 weeks depending on how much discussion we have on
each lesson. After this we hope to resume the sermons

and continue, to study together as an adult Bible school

class after church. Also we hope to encourage the adults involved to invite their unchurched friends into their

homes and go through the lessons again. The lessons are designed to give one the "gist" of the Bible, showing
the scheme of redemption from Genesis to Revelation.

We expect to also take the time to answer questions

or problems of any nature from tiie Bible. Hopefully those

who coiTiplete the study will come to realize the purpose

of the Bible in showing the way of salvation as well as

its ability to provide answers foi their questions and

for life's problems. We can think of no better means

of evangelism than this tried and proven method if we

can get people to listen

TAMMY TUMBLES

The Kelsey Kid in the news this month is Turoblin' Tammy. She fell fcom the top bunk again. After the fall (around midnight) she vomited the rest of the night and really had us worried. Thought they would never get through talring x-rays (thank goodness. Vife had medical insurance). Nothing was broken - she only had a slight concussion
and a sore shoulder. A year and a half ago she fell out
of the same bunk and had several stitches in hei head. NOW she sleeps in the bottom bunk.

Tammy is doing very well in school, being a very avid

reader. She 5e<?ms to spend all her spate time readings The latest thrill in her life is being able to join the

Browhies. They teach hei many good things about how to be helpful which is right down her alley. Tammy also
wants to become a Christian. She is only eight. It is

very

difficult thing sometimes to detetm.ine if your

child understands such a decision. She must demonstrate

an understanding of submission and obedience as it relates to baptism before we Vv-ill give our ok for her to be baptized. It must be HER decision without our en
couragement but I imagine it will be soon now.
NEXT MONTH:
will be featured.

LOSSES AND GAINS

Piogress has been much slower than we would like but

we just have to keep going I guess. Sometimes it gets

discouraging but with God's help it is bound to succeed eventually. We lost our only two families. One moved

to Honolulu and the other has been lost (temporarily, at least) to discouragement. But there have been gains
too. Right now another family has begun attending regularly but will be moving before the end of the year. There is also a young man who attends regularly and
a lady and her teenage daughter who are occasional atten-

ders.

Sometimes we get so discouraged that we feel

like quitting but we are convinced that God_will triumph.

Please pray that we can be used by Him.

BOB AND NORMA SMALL VISIT HAWAII

Bob & Norma Small witli their daughter, Lora, from Checotah, Oklahoma, recently visited Hawaii and took movies and still pictures of all the mission works. They plan, among other things, to put together a movie about the
Lord's work here. It will be sometime before it is avail able but we will let you know when it is The Smalls are are also planning a mission work of their own in the field

of Audio Visuals.

Several very useful aids ate being

planned, with some already completed, which will be made

available to churches at cost. We pray that this family

will be successful in this work. Mrs. Small is the former Dr. Norma Sneed and Bob is a successful minister and

photographer.

THANKSGIVING IN HAWAII

Thanksgiving in Hawaii is prteey much the same as other parts of the USA. The Sunday afternoon before Thanks giving people from eleven Island churches got together for a sirigspiration at Palolo Valley. Then Thanksgiving day the Kelsey family foined several other families of Christian workers as guests of the Glen Powell family
at the Sunset Beach Christian school.

ANOTHER CONTACT FOR CHRIST !1

The most exciting bit of news is that another young family has been contacted for Christ. This family was reached through the Revival Fires TV program. They are not attending church yet but we are conducting a home Bible study with them. We have met with them three weeks in a row now. Please pray for them and us. Mahalo.

DANGEROUS DANNY

The Kelsey-kid-iii-the-news this month is Daniel. Fot a long time Danny seemed to be afcaid of just about every thing. He coundn't even climb a set of stairs without shaking all over and turning white as a sheet. Somehow he managed to overcome this problem and often gives us cause for concern. If a paper airplane, a ball, or other toy goes on top of the house, he is the first up after it. We live a couple of blocks &om a very steep hill. It is about 600 feet high and Danny and his fdends enjoy climbing it.

A short while back Daniel, some neighbor boys, and I tried to collect a bunch of bees and gather their honey
from an old abandoned shack. It was a first-time ex-

p erience for all of us but Danny stayed with us all tibe way. Daniel is not without problems though as he is having a bit of difficulty keeping up at school. His behaviour is good at home but naughty at school. This has caused us a great deal of concern because we simply do not permit disrespect at home. Howevee he has overcome other problems so with hard work and God's help he can
overcome this one too.

One of our greatest moments came when Danny accepted Christ as His Saviour and obeyed Him in baptism last year.
Danny and Tammy have both resumed their Piano lessons (Mommy too!) and seem to be doing well. It's expensive, of course, but should be a help to them as they grow up
in the Lord's service.

NEXT MONTH: Daring David.

MELF

KALIMAKA

&

HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU

(MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR) Although this is being prepared before Christmas, it is doubtful that you will receive it in the mails before Jan uary. Never-the-less we wish you the best of Holiday

cheer and pray that you draw closer to Christ as you

take special time out to remember Him.

We wish we could write each one of yo:^ personally (we had indeed planned to) but just cannot this year. If we could get some secretarial help we prehaps could get
more done in this regard. But funds ate not sufficient

to hite one and so far there is no one in the congregation

that can serve in this capacity. ; So in the meantime we do it ourselves tin sparodic spurts). In this connection
we want to make special mention of Jo Ann & La Verne

Dedmon (out forwarding agents); Fred & Betty Taylor (our mail agents); and Bill & Sally King and Ben Saathoff

(who print our newsletter). Without their kind kokua (help)

we could not possibly communicate even as well as we

do. We are very gteatful to them and each one of you who
make it possible for us to do our work here.

DARING

DAVID

This month's Kelsey-kid-in-the-news is David. David is out second gted^ He is slow in his school work but he tries hard. His teachers say he is well behaved and quiet and this pleases us. In play he seems afraid

of nothing and will try anything that is suggested to him.

Recently some neighbor boys blindfolded him and fed him a peeled gra je and a cooked noodle as initiation into their "club". When they told him it was a cat's
eye and a worm he believed them but that didn't slow

him down any

he ate them anyway/ I doubt he would

have slowed down even if it had been real.

Trees, ladders, and other obstacles present no barrier

to David and he takes to water like a fish. One of his

deepest regrets is that we get to the beach so seldom

(and it is so near).

It's even hard to get him out of the

a mile each to some but miles home. happy about.

bathtub he likes water so much.

David, along with Danny and Tammy, walk way to school every day. This seems far when he was in kindergarten he walked TWO He seems to have good teachers which we're

Although he seems rather clumsy, David seems to have good rythm. We haven't started him in Piano lessons yet because of the expense. We are already spending $3 per lesson for three people and that adds up fast. Jean, Danny, & Tammy are now taking lessons.

SECULAR WORK IS TIME CONSUMING

As you know I have been working as a substitute teacher

for some time now to provide the family with its basic needs. Now it has become necessary for Jean also to

go to work.

She drives a big transit type school bus

for a local company part time. She carries 80 to 100 kids

per load. Please pray that we won't have to continue

this kind of schedule much longer. Thank you.
