Dental Treatments
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that will simulate a natural tooth in root function. The
implant is placed in the bone and then bonds with the bone to serve as an anchor for the replacement
tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth. Dental
implants help prevent further bone loss which will help maintain facial structure. Dental implants
look and feel like natural teeth. Implants are not for everyone. You must be in good general health,
have healthy gums and enough bone in your jaw to support the implant(s). You must be willing to
see your dentist or dental specialist several times until the treatment is complete, and take very good
care of your implant(s). In addition, implants can cost more than other kinds of replacement teeth.

It's normal for bone to shrink if it no longer has teeth to support. Because an implant bonds to bone,
the bone is less likely to shrink. But if you have been missing teeth for some time, you may have lost
bone. A bone graft can build up the bone so it can support an implant. When a bone graft is done,
bone is added to the area where your jawbone has shrunk.
Here's How An Implant Is Done:
Step 1 Your dentist (or oral surgeon) will put a small metal post into your jawbone.
Step 2 Over time, the post will bond with the bone around it.
Step 3 The post (or implant) will act like an anchor to hold one or more false teeth in place.

Because implants bond to the bone, false teeth attached to implants look and act much like natural
teeth. But implants are not as strong as natural teeth. You must brush and floss your implant(s) very
carefully. Be gentle, but make sure you brush all sides of your implant(s). A toothbrush that has
longer bristles at the tip may help clean behind your implant(s).Floss very carefully at least once a
day. You will need to be gentle with the floss where the implant meets the gum (called the gum line).
You may find a floss thread useful for cleaning this area. Also, take care as not to scratch the implant
with any metal.

Bridges
If a tooth is lost, it is important to replace it with a false (or artificial) tooth as soon as possible. This
procedure will prevent your remaining teeth from drifting out of line and causing other problems.
A bridge can replace one or more missing teeth and is held firmly in place by healthy teeth on each
side of the missing one(s). You cannot remove a bridge. It is permanent.A tooth on either side of the
space is needed to support the bridge. These teeth are referred to as the abutment teeth. The abutment
teeth are prepared by reducing the tooth structure around and on top of the tooth. This creates space
for the bridge to fit over the abutment teeth.

An impression is then taken of the teeth and sent to a lab. The lab then uses the impression to create
a bridge that is custom to your teeth. This process takes about one week. You will leave the office
with a temporary bridge made by the dentist at chair side. This temporary will protect the teeth from
sensitivity and shifting while your permanent bridge is being made.

Here's How A Bridge Is Made:

Step 1 The teeth on each side of the missing one(s) are prepared for crowns.
Step 2 The false tooth (or teeth) and two crowns are custom-made in a dental lab as one
piece.
Step 3 The unit is placed in your mouth. The crowns are cemented to your two healthy
teeth on each side of the missing one(s).

A bridge should last for about 10 years, if you take good care of it. Your dentist will show you how
to use a floss threader to floss under and around the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle of the bridge.

Crowns
If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown (also called a cap) can be used to cover the damaged
part of your tooth. A crown protects your tooth from further damage.
You may need a crown if:
You have a root canal;

You have a large filling in a tooth;

You have a broken tooth; or

Your tooth is badly stained, not the right shape or out of line.

Crowns can be made of different kinds of metals, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. They are
strong and last for about 10 years, if you take good care of them. Brush and floss your crown, just
like you clean your natural teeth
. But crowns and replacement teeth may not be as strong as your natural teeth, so:
Do not bite down on hard objects;

Do not use your teeth to open or cut things; and

Do not do these things with your natural teeth either.

Here's How A Crown Is Made:

Step 1 Your dentist may take a mold (or an impression) of your tooth to fit a temporary
crown. It protects your tooth until the final, permanent crown is ready. Temporary
crowns may not have the same shape and colour as permanent crown.
Step 2 The tooth and area is aneasthasized (frozen). He or she then reduces the tooth
surface to make room for the crown.
Step 3 Another mold (or impression) is taken of the filed-down tooth and nearby teeth.
Then the temporary crown is placed over your tooth and you are sent on your way.
Step 4 This mold is sent to a dental lab, where your permanent crown is custom-made. The
mold of your tooth is used to make a model. A filling (or restoration) that is the same
size and shape as your tooth is built based on the model.
Step 5 On your next visit, your dentist takes off the temporary crown and puts on the
permanent one. Then he or she checks to make sure the crown is the right fit, shape
and colour. If it is, your dentist then cements the crown into place. Your tooth will
look and work very much like a natural tooth.

Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin barrier placed in the pits and grooves of back teeth (premolars and molars).
This barrier is placed to prevent decay-causing bacteria to form on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Extractions

Care After Minor Oral Surgery

Sometimes, after minor oral surgery, you may have pain, bleeding and swelling. This section
offers some advice on dealing with these problems. Your dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon
will give you advice too.

POST OP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Bite on gauze for 30 minutes.
2. Keep fingers and tongue away from the operated area.
3. Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours, although it is permissible to drink cool or lukewarm
liquids. Smoking should be avoided for 12 hours.
4. Starting tomorrow, rinse your mouth frequently with a solution of ¨ö teaspoon of salt in a
glass of warm water. Continue the rinses for a few days.
5. If discomfort persists please contact our dental office.
6. Diet - Cold or lukewarm liquids may be taken for the first 4-6 hours. After this any soft food
is permissible.
7. Bleeding - It is normal for the saliva to be streaked with blood for a day. If frank bleeding is
present, fold sterile gauze into a firm wad and place it directly on the bleeding area.
Maintain firm pressure by biting for 20 minutes. The gauze may be substituted by a warm,
soaked tea bag. The tannic acid in the tea has a clotting effect.
8. Swelling and Discomfort - It is to be expected in certain areas, usually reaching its
maximum two days after surgery. It will disappear gradually and is no cause for concern. If
desired, ice pads may be applied for the first 4-6 hours only, alternating for 20 minutes on,
20 minutes off.
9. Sutures (stitches) - If required, are removed without discomfort in about 5 days. An
appointment will be made for you.
10. Do not hesitate to call the office if in doubt.
Bonding
Bonding is a quick and painless way to repair chips in your teeth. Bonding uses a white plastic
paste, called composite resin - a plastic that is semi-liquid at first, but that becomes hard and durable
when cured with light. This material can be tinted to match the colour of natural teeth and can also be
contoured and shaped to resemble the missing part of a chipped tooth. It can be painted over a
stained tooth, and it can make a fractured tooth look whole and perfect. Composite resin can even
build up the size of teeth so gaps between them are reduced or eliminated.

Here's How A Bonding Is Done:

Step 1 Your dentist paints a mild gel on your tooth to make it a little rough. This step helps
the composite resin stick better to the enamel of your tooth.
Step 2 The composite resin is mixed and tinted to match the colour of your natural teeth.
Step 3 Your dentist puts the composite resin on your tooth in layers.
Step 4 A very bright light is used to harden (or cure) each layer of resin as it is put on your
tooth.
Step 5 After the last layer of composite resin is hardened (or cured), your dentist shapes
and polishes the resin so the finished tooth looks natural and smooth.

Advantages:
It's painless. There's usually only minor drilling involved.

It doesn't take much time. Several teeth can usually be veneered in one visit.

It costs a lot less than crowns. Before direct veneering, crowns were the only way to improve
the look of chipped, widely-spaced or discoloured teeth.
It can be used on children, because bonded material can be removed and replaced as
children's teeth grow
