ABOUT THIS REPORT

Scope & Method

This report forecasts US medical services demand in US dollars to 2017. Also provided
are forecasts for patient activity by volume to 2017. Total medical services demand in
dollars is segmented by type of provider in terms of:

hospital
physician and clinical
dental
other professional
nursing home
home healthcare
other medical service providers such as industries and schools.

Patient activity volume is segmented by type as follows:

diagnostic tests
physician visits
hospital outpatient visits
other outpatient visits
dental visits
home healthcare visits
surgical procedures
hospital admissions.

Excluded from the scope of this report is demand for medical products, which
encompass prescription drugs, durable medical equipment, and other nondurables.
Nonpersonal health expenditures, such as administration expenses, are also excluded.
To illustrate historical trends, total demand in dollars is provided in an annual series
from 2002 to 2012; the various demand segments, in dollars, are reported at five-year
intervals for 2007 and 2012. Patient activity segments, in volume terms, are also
provided at five-year intervals for 2007 and 2012. Forecasts emanate from the
identification and analysis of pertinent statistical relationships and other historical
trends/events as well as their expected progression/impact over the forecast period.
Changes in quantities between reported years of a given total or segment are typically
provided in terms of five-year compound annual growth rates (CAGRs). For the sake of
brevity, forecasts are generally stated in smoothed CAGR-based descriptions to the
forecast year, such as demand is projected to rise 3.2% annually through 2017. The
result of any particular year over that period, however, may exhibit volatility and depart
from a smoothed, long-term trend, as historical data typically illustrate.
