What is the right supply chain for your product? Many years ago the principal worry of a company was the operative efficiency and inventory returns, even when the market demands for availability of product sothis situations produced a dissatisfaction of the consumer and later it would represent monetary losses and excess of inventory of products that were not of the interest of the market. Due to these inefficiencies in the service and development of the company, the author of this article, Marshall Fisher, made a research in which he classified on two groups the products that, in general, the companies produce. As well as the best type of supply chain to apply for each one. There exist two big groups of products: functional and innovative. Nevertheless, to understand this difference is necessary to distinguish the principal functions of the development of supply chain. The physical function is summarized in the process since the raw material exists up to the transportation of the final product of a point of the supply chain to other one. On the other hand, the intention of market deviation is to guarantee the variety of products according to the needs and expectations of the consumer. Thanks to the classification of the products in: functional and innovative according to the demand can be predictable on the first one and not predictable on the second one. It helps the process of production and distribution of the final product to Now the last step should be to recognize the best type of chain of supply for the product. In case of the functional products there is more compatibility with the efficient process and the innovative products with the market-responsive process. I related this article with two topics learnt in class. The first one is the definition of supply chain and the second one is the objective of supply chain which is divided into three parts: one internal objective and two external objectives. Firstly, the definition says that supply chain is the coordination among all the areas of the company. We can say this concept was applied on the Campbell Soup

example where the flow of information is vital to know the inventories of all the retailers and then distribute each product where they are needed the most. Additionally, it also mentions that companies should get a considerable margin of profits and competitive advantage. For example, National Bicycle, where a responsive supply chain was a success, even though, the customer had to sacrifice the immediate availability and delivery for a customized bicycle. Secondly, the objective of supply chain and its classification. For instance, the internal objective of Campbell Soup where it was necessary to forecast future demands thanks to the shared information between the company and retailers. It also helps to determine which products require replenishment. On the other hand, the other external objectives focuses on demand and clients satisfaction, again, like the case of National Bicycle. Despite the fact that mass customization is not cheap. The added value of having a customized bicycle induces people to buy and get a new bicycle after two weeks. Finally, I would like to share an example that focuses on functional products and the application of efficient supply chain. Eastern Seaboard Standard Oil or Esson Standard Oil is a group of companies that is an international trade name for ExxonMobil and its related companies. Esson has a complex supply chain similar to Campbell Soup. First, they receive the order at 10h00 am. Then, they program the route of the trucks. Next, they give the cargo tickets to the shippers until 2h00 pm. The next day, they load the product at 6h00 am and the product is delivered to the customer two hours later. Meanwhile, at the company the inventory planner checks the monthly consumption of diesel, gasoline (premium and regular), kerosene, Jet-A1 and Av-gas. Esson project a three-month order. There is also two distribution centers (Puerto Corts and Petrosur) which every month control the physical inventory.
