Ms. Leela Bordia

Proprietor, M/s Neerja International Inc. M/s Neerja International Inc., founded in 1980 by Ms. Leela Bordia, was the first company to successfully make beads, door knobs, necklaces, pendants and small items of Blue Pottery. Ms Leela Bordia is a woman with a passion for Blue Pottery and is forever looking for avenues that will benefit not only the crafts industry but also artisans involved in the manufacture of pottery items. Born and brought up in Rajasthan in a Jain family from Kolkata, Ms. Bordia saw her mother involved with the activities of Mother Teresa during the Bengal famine that sowed in her the seeds of social welfare which germinated in the years to come in the form of Neerja International Inc. Ms. Bordia started Neerja International Inc. with four craftspeople, two men and two women. Earlier during her visits to the villages around Jaipur, she saw that the problems of the poor were enormous. Having noticed the traditional Blue Pottery work in the villages, Ms. Bordia wondered if this art could be marketed as a way of improving the living standards of the villagers. Today, Neerja International Inc. is the largest manufacturer and exporter of Blue Pottery in India. Realizing that Blue Pottery was almost synonyms with the culture and tradition of Rajasthan, Neerja International Inc. set up its own warehouse and showroom in Jaipur. Innovation is an integral part of Neerja International. The company produces over 300 Blue Pottery products and 1000 designs. In the process, the company provides employment to thousands of craftsmen and their families, and this makes Jaipur the centre of the blueware art industry. Ms. Bordia is a pioneer in her chosen field taking the 200 year-old traditional craftsmanship to the countries of France, UK, US and Japan. She serves as a role model to countless young craftsmen who wish to enter this field.
