To Whom Shall I Leave My Kingdom?

Il re di un vasto regno iniziava ad invecchiare. Decise che era tempo di selezionare un erede fra i suoi quattro figli, cos li chiam uno alla volta per discutere leredit del suo regno. Il primo figlio entr nella stanza del re e si mise a sedere; il re disse: Figlio mio, sono molto vecchio e non vivr ancora per molto. Desidero affidare il mio regno al figlio che pi adatto al compito. Dimmi, se ti lascio il mio regno, cosa gli darai? Questo suo figlio era estremamente ricco, cos riflettendo sulla domanda rispose: Sono un uomo molto benestante. Se mi lasci il tuo regno, io gli dar tutte le mie ricchezze cos che diventer il regno pi ricco del mondo! Grazie, figlio mio, disse il re, congedandolo. The king of a large kingdom was growing old. He decided that it was time to select an heir from among his four sons, so he called them in one at a time to discuss the inheritance of his kingdom. The first son entered the chamber of the king and sat down, and the king said, My son, I am very old and will not live much longer. I wish to entrust my kingdom to the son best suited to receive it. Tell me, if I leave my kingdom to you, what will you give to the kingdom? Now this son was very rich, so when asked the question, he replied: I am a man of vast wealth. If you leave me your kingdom I will give it all of my wealth and it will be the richest kingdom in all the world. Thank you, son, the king said as he dismissed the son.

Entr il secondo figlio, ed il re disse: Figlio mio, sono molto vecchio e non vivr ancora per molto. Desidero affidare il mio regno al figlio che pi adatto al compito. Dimmi, se ti lascio il mio regno, cosa gli darai? Ora questo suo figlio era molto intelligente, cos dopo aver pensato alla risposta disse: Sono un uomo di grande intelligenza. Se mi affidi il regno metter a sua disposizione tutta la mia intelligenza e diventer il regno pi intelligente di tutto il mondo! Grazie, figlio mio, disse il re e conged il secondo figlio.

Se mi lascerai il regno, io gli regaler tutta la mia forza, rendendolo il regno pi forte di tutto il mondo. Grazie, figlio mio, disse il re e conged il terzo figlio.

Il quarto figlio entr e venne ricevuto dal re nella stessa maniera dei suoi fratelli. Questo suo figlio non era particolarmente ricco, intelligente o forte, cos rispose: Padre mio, tu sai che i miei fratelli sono pi ricchi, pi intelligenti, pi forti di me. Negli anni che hanno passato a guadagnarsi questi attributi, io ho trascorso il mio tempo fra il popolo del nostro regno. Ho condiviso le loro malattie e le loro sofferenze ed ho imparato ad amarli. Lunica cosa che ho da offrire al popolo del tuo regno il mio amore. Quando il re mor, il popolo aspett con ansia di sapere chi sarebbe stato il nuovo sovrano. Mai si vide tanta gioia e tanta allegria come quando vennero a sapere che il loro re sarebbe stato il quarto figlio.

The fourth son entered and was greeted by the king in the same fashion as the other three. Now this son wasnt especially rich, or smart, or strong, so he replied, My father, you know that my brothers are much richer, smarter, and stronger than I. While they have spent years gaining these attributes, I have spent my time among the people in your kingdom. I have shared with them in their sickness and sorrow, and I have learned to love them. The only thing I have to give to the people of your kingdom is my love. When the king died, the people anxiously awaited the news as to their new ruler. And the greatest rejoicing the kingdom ever knew took place when they heard that their new king was the fourth son.
