GENERAL Scope This guideline defines the contents of each column in a piping linelist for NOVA Chemicals Corporation (hereinafter referred to as 'NOVA'). This guideline also assists the user and the compiler to understand the different entries and to use the correct values for process design and detail engineering purposes. This will minimize the misunderstanding of terms between the compiler and the users. No variation shall be made from this guideline without prior completion and approval of a NOVA Engineering Standards Variance Form (No. SPF-012). Units of Measurement All units of measurement are expressed in English Units (U.S. Conventional System of Measurement) followed by the International System of Metric Units (SI) in parentheses. See NOVA Engineering Guideline EG-PPG-0101 Piping, Units Conversion Guideline. Refer to NOVA Engineering Guideline EG-PPG-0101 Piping, Units Conversion Guideline for pressure rating designations, nominal size designations and unit conversions applicable to Piping (PPG) and Valves (VLV) standards. Definition of Terms The definitions of standard engineering and discipline terms used throughout this Standard are listed in Appendix A. STANDARDS, CODES AND REGULATIONS General NOVA representatives and its suppliers are responsible for identifying, issuing and using copies of the applicable editions / addenda of NOVA Engineering Standards cited in Section 2.2 below.

QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA) AND QUALITY CONTROL (QC) Various responsibilities exist to ensure that QA and QC in NOVA Engineering Standards for products and services will be met. Refer to NOVA Engineering Standard ES-PPG-1001 Piping, Fabrication and Installation, Section 4, Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) for explanation of responsibilities. LINELIST HEADING DESCRIPTION General For a complete sample of a line see Appendix B. In the following sections, 5.2, etc., the use of this guideline is taken through a step-by-step explanation of each part of the Linelist Header. Revision Number

5.3.3

Running Number This is a sequential number, which in combination with the Size, Service Code and Pipe Class, uniquely identifies a pipe or section of a pipe. Pipe Class This defines the piping class designation for the line. Each piping class designation has a corresponding Piping Class datasheet found in ES-PPG-9001 Piping Class Datasheets that fully describes the details of the piping components for use. Phase The state of the process stream condition. Routing
ROUTING From To

5.4.1

From The From point indicates the beginning (or head) of a pipe or section of a pipe. Examples of From points are: Equipment Nozzle Pipe Pipe Tail(s) Discharge of Safety Relief Valve Outlet of In-Line Equipment or Instrument Tie-Point To The To point indicates the end (or tail) of a pipe or section of a pipe. Examples of To points are: Equipment Nozzle Pipe Pipe Head(s) Inlet of Safety Relief Valve Inlet of In-Line Equipment or Instrument Tie-Point The To and From points should reflect the flow direction of the fluid insofar as possible except with bi-directional lines.

P&ID Number

P&ID No.

5.5.1 5.6

This indicates the P&ID drawing number on which the From point of the pipe is located. Operating Condition
OPERATING CONDITION Fluid Density, 3 3 lb/ft (kg/m ) Pressure, psig (Kpag) Temp F (C)

5.6.1

Fluid Density Fluid density can be expressed as pounds/foot3 (kilograms/meters3) or as specific gravity. The unit must be consistent throughout the document. This value is used for pipe support design. Operating Pressure This is the normal operating pressure of the fluid in the pipe expressed in psig (kPag). Operating Temperature This is the normal operating temperature of the fluid in the pipe expressed in F (C). It is used for calculating equipment nozzle movements in flexibility calculations. Upset Condition
UPSET CONDITION Upset Time Pressure, psig (Kpag) Temp F (C) Frequency #/s Duration s or min or hr

5.6.2

5.6.3

5.7

5.7.1

Upset Pressure This is the pressure when there is variant in the process that will raise the pressure above normal. This is set by process conditions. This may not be limited by safety valve setting since a failed safety valve will allow pressure to go to a higher value. When there is a backup safety valve the upset pressure can be at the setting of the higher setting of the two (2). Upset Temperature This is the highest (lowest in cryogenic lines) temperature the pipe will reach if there is an upset in the process.

5.7.3

Upset Time This gives the frequency and duration of upsets. This is used in the requirements of Section 302 of B31.3. Steam Out Condition
STEAM OUT CONDITION Pressure, Temp F psig (Kpag) (C)

5.8

5.8.1

Steam Out Pressure This is the pressure of the steam used in steam out. Steam Out Temperature This is the temperature of the steam used in the steam out procedure. This should be used for stress range calculation if it is higher than the design temperature, unless the section of pipe is isolated during steam out that changes the pipe run and anchor arrangement of the line. If the dry out temperature is higher than the steam out temperature, use the dry out temperature for the stress range calculation. Design Condition
DESIGN CONDITION Pressure, Temp F MDMT psig (Kpag) (C)

5.8.2

5.9

5.9.1

Design Pressure This is the pressure together with the design temperature, used for selecting the pressure / temperature rating of the piping components. It is also used for stressing of the pipe. This should not be lower than the upset pressure. Design Temperature This is the design temperature. It should be used for stress range and nozzle loading calculation. NOTE: The stress range calculation should be the temperature range from -20F to design temperature or, in cryogenic lines the design temperature and the highest ambient temperature in the sunny location. The design temperature should not be lower than the upset temperature. Minimum Design Metal Temperature (MDMT) The lowest temperature that the metallic piping system will experience.
