Sericulture World Overview

Silk was extensively traded across the world from ancient times through trade routes known as silk routes.

Global production of silk is in excess of 100,000 tonnes being produced in more than 20 countries across the world

Silk is a high value - low volume product totaling 0.2% of worlds total textile production.

Largest producers and suppliers of raw silk and silk yarn are in Asia

China leads the global production, with India following at the 2nd position

The world raw silk production stood at 126,995 MT in 2009; Of this, production of Mulberry raw silk stood at 75%. World Raw silk production has experienced a decline of 21% from 153,942 MT in 2006 to 126,995 MT in 2009.

Ranked 2nd in the production of total silk produce accounting for 14.6% of the global share or 20,410 MTs (2010-11)

Production and Exports

Mulberry accounts for 80.16% (16,360 MT), Eri 13.52% (2,760 MT), Tasar 5.71% (1116 MT) and Muga 0.61% (124 MT) of the total raw silk production The value of exports of silk goods from India is Rs 2,892 crores or USD 642 Mn

Resources

India has favorable climatic and soil conditions for extensive Mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing India is the only country that produces all 4 types of silk Mulberry, Eri, Muga and Tassar. Global monopoly in the production of Muga, the golden yellow silk

Production of raw mulberry silk in India was 16,360 MTs while Vanya (non Mulberry) silk was 4,050 MT (2010 - 11) In the last decade mulberry silk production has increased by 11.6 % while production of Vanya silk has increased by 97.8% Mulberry Bivoltine silk (high quality gradable) production was 1,400 MTs in 2010 - 11

Domestic production is at 20,410 MTs as against demand of 28,000 MTs the gap is due to shortage of gradable high quality silk used in power looms and export oriented units Anti Dumping duty has been levied by the Government defining reference price of raw silk at US$ 37.32/Kg for 2A grade and lower grades and silk fabric at US$ 1.66 4.55/meter (20 100 gm/meter grade)
