Global scenario
Sericulture
Silk was extensively traded across the world from ancient times through trade routes known as silk routes.
Global production of silk is in excess of 100,000 tonnes being produced in more than 20 countries across the world
Silk is a high value - low volume product totaling 0.2% of worlds total textile production.
Largest producers and suppliers of raw silk and silk yarn are in Asia
China leads the global production, with India following at the 2nd position

Mulberry accounts for 80.16% (16,360 MT), Eri 13.52% (2,760 MT), Tasar 5.71% (1116 MT) and Muga 0.61% (124 MT) of the total raw silk production The value of exports of silk goods from India is Rs 2,892 crores or USD 642 Mn
Resources
India has favorable climatic and soil conditions for extensive Mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing India is the only country that produces all 4 types of silk Mulberry, Eri, Muga and Tassar. Global monopoly in the production of Muga, the golden yellow silk
Key Drivers
Sector Profile Sericulture
Improved silkworm race and hybrids, better rearing and reeling technologies , evolution of high leaf yielding mulberry varieties
