a. Brief Course Description This course serves as an introduction to the principles and techniques used in the field of chemical engineering. Stoichiometry is the application of the chemical laws, the laws of definite proportions and the conservation of matter and energy to chemical reactions and processes. It is a quantitative relationship between two or more substances in a process involving chemical and physical changes. b. Course objectives This course is intended To develop a students skills in problem solving. To help a student apply material balance techniques. To help a student apply energy balance techniques. To give a student a solid back ground in chemical processing c. i) Detailed Course Outline Dimensions and Units (1week) Give definitions, differences between dimensions and units Give different forms of dimensions and the corresponding units Outline the common unit systems Expose the student to derived units Introduce the student to different applications of dimensional analysis

ii) Conversion of Units and conversion factors (1 week) Methods of converting from one set of units to the other using conversion factors Give common conversion factor tables. iii) Common measurements (2 weeks) Temperature and its measurement Give various scales and units of temperature measurement Differentiate between absolute and relative temperature scales Methods for temperature conversion from one scale to the other Pressure and its measurement Different units of pressure measurements and conversion from one set to the other Differentiate between absolute and relative pressure Outline various types of pressure- gauge pressure, atmospheric pressure, barometric pressure etc Define other measurements/quantities e.g. specific gravity, specific volume, concentration etc iv) The chemical equation and Stoichiometry (2 weeks)

Stoichiometrically balanced equation Relationship between combining weights Mole, mole fraction, mole percentage, mass fraction Terminologies used in chemical reactions- excess reactant, limiting reactant, conversion, selectivity, degree of completion etc
