Scanner Bolt Holt Testing

Bolt hole inspection has been one of the earliest eddy current inspection since the advent of eddy current as a testing method.

Bolt Hole Probes: Used for detecting
flaws inside fastener holes, which are commonly found in aircraft Fuselage and pylons

Rotary Hole Probes: Used with rotating scanner guns and turned at high speeds.

Reflection-Differential

Three coils are making contact with the surface, one driver and two pick-ups. More sensitive to small surface cracks and less sensitive to lift-off. Most of the rotating scanner bolt hole probes uses this type of coil arrangement.

Fischer 4pin (Universal) or Lemo 4pin versions available. 600 3000 RPM Compatible with NDT-19eII and NDT-24 but at fixed 1200 RPM. Alarm LED

Lemo Stepped 4pin connector. 600 2400 RPM Compatible with NDT-19eII and NDT-24 but at fixed 1200 RPM. Alarm LED

Instrument Set-up; Step-1 Note All Nortec Scanner guns are PowerLinked.

Plug scanner cable 16-pin to 16-pin scanner cable into the instrument. Instrument will default to PowerLink mode. Press LOG/ENTER soft key.

Instrument Set-up; Step-2: Install scanner probe into scanner gun and locate bolt Hole standard.

Press MAN function key, then press SCAN function key to adjust scanner screen to.

Instrument Set-up; Set-3 Split Screen Display Note this follows general practices for Airbus, Boeing & USAF for bolt hole inspection.

Press SWP MODE soft key.

Rotate Smart knob or press soft key until sweep mode is set for SWP MODE EXT/IMP. This will give you spit screen display for both Sweep and Impedance display for instrument step for scanner hole inspection.

Instrument Set-up; Set-4, Screen Errors

Now press DISP function key, then press PERSIST soft key and adjust persist to read 0.4-0.6s seconds.

Instrument Set-up; Set-5 Angle/Phase Adjustment. Note Angle/Phase will change from probe to probe. So if you exchange probe repeat this process

Press Angle soft key. Turn on scanner gun and put the hole probe on the surface of the standard. Adjust angle until you get a horizon display.

Instrument Set-up; Set-6 Filter Adjustment for Scanner Inspection. It will be necessary to have scanner hole probe in the hole standard to complete this process.

Press MAIN function key then FILTER SETUP soft key, this will take you to filter set-up for Hi & Low pass filter.

Instrument Set-up; Set-6a Adjustment for HI & LOW PASS FILTER.

To adjust HIPASS & LOWPASS soft key and rotate Smart knob as required per procedure requirements.
