Browning ready to lead Bulldog offense

fter a record-breaking first season as quarterback of Folsom High, Jake Browning is ready for his junior season. Browning threw for a state record 5,248 yards last year, along with 63 touchdowns and all signs are pointing to another big season this year. For his part, with a years experience under his belt, Browning believes he is a better quarterback this season than he was last year. I wanted to get bigger, stronger and faster and I did that, Browning said. I also worked on my double moves and I

ger, Taylor said. I think hes up to 187 pounds from 165 last year. Just being bigger and stronger means that hes got more velocity on his passes and he can throw it farther. Hes also faster on his feet. Theres more to Brownings improvement than his physical ability. Hes got more data in his brain with his first year behind him and that experience really is the most important thing, Taylor said. He knows what hes seeing. Also, the guys around him have improved as well. We spent a lot of time on strength and conditioning and as a team are bigger, stronger, faster and quicker and those guys will make Jake look better too. The teams commitment in the offseason to getting stronger and working on improving their overall athletic ability has Browning excited
about this years offense. We really put a bigger emphasis on getting bigger and stronger and improving our speed and agility with Coach Val (Laolagi), Browning said. Were bigger across the board because of that strength training. Weve got a good line with people stepping up and weve got a great group of receivers with Will McClure, Josiah Deguara, Rodney Ellison, Troy Knox, Parker Boone and Bailey Laolagi at running back. While Browning put up impressive numbers a season ago, none of that is important to him. He just wants to win football games. When asked about his goals for the season, he didnt mention anything about passing yards or touchdowns. I want to complete every pass and I want our team to win every game we play, Browning said. We dont go into any
game thinking were going to lose. Im confident, but not over-confident. We think we can win every game, but we still have to go out and do it. We havent won a game yet. Taylor doesnt put any expectations on his quarterback either, other than simply getting the job done. I expect Jake to be the same guy as he was last year, Taylor said. I expect him to be very consistent and patient and take the game as it comes. We never talk about stats; just about winning the game. Sure, we throw the ball more than most teams, but Jake doesnt like talking about his numbers to the point where hes uncomfortable about it and wants to change the subject. In the end, he just wants to win. When asked about his sophomore year, a year which saw Folsom reach the Nor-Cal Open playoff game, Browning said it was a fun year. I enjoyed playing with my teammates and fortunately I get to play with many of the same guys this year, Browning said. Of course, its more fun when you win and we were able to do that a lot. Unfortunately, the season ended with the loss to De La Salle, but that drives you to get better. Browning has already received scholarship offers from Washington, Washington State, Utah and Boise State. If hes a better quarterback this year than last, expect this list of schools to at least double over the next year.

olsom Highs football players have T-shirts which read fear the blue, referring to the color of their uniforms and the strength of their team. This year that blue will extend to their home field, as Prairie City Stadium on Folsom Highs campus has been outfitted with royal blue turf with red end zones, sprucing up a green field that badly needed to be replaced. The life expectancy for those fields is seven to 10 years and we got 10 years out of ours, Folsom High coach Kris Richardson said. The seams were coming up and it was becoming hard and really was becoming a safety issue. The old turf was put down in 2003 and after a decade of use, it

was time for it to be replaced. We got the use we expected out of it, said Matt Washburn, the Folsom Cordova Unified School Districts director of facilities development. Those fields typically last that long and we got a lot of use out of ours with football, soccer, marching band, section championship soccer games and more. The new turf, which alone costs $400,000, is scheduled to be completed this week. Its a field that Richardson is excited about. Coach (Troy) Taylor and I saw Boise States blue turf firsthand and we talked with the district about having something unique and different, Richardson said. We talked to the players and they were excited about it. Folsom senior receiver Troy Knox is excited to play on the new turf. The old turf was like sandpaper and youd get turf burns all the time, Knox said. The new turf has a different feel to it, but well get used to it. I think the blue and red color is awesome. I
love. Washburn said the turf and installation costs, totaling $700,000, was funded by cellular tower revenue. While the field boasts Folsom Highs blue team color, some aspects of the project were not completed. The field could be personalized further with Folsom and Bulldogs in each end zone, as well as a bulldog centered at midfield, since the stadium is shared with Vista del Lagos football team. Those improvements will have to wait until the Eagles get bleachers and a press box so they can have their own stadium. Hopefully, well have a bond measure in the future to finish Vistas stadium, Washburn said. Were working on and planning for a bond measure hopefully in the next couple of years.

his wouldnt be an ideal situation for many coaches to be in, replacing the only head coach a high school has known since it opened in the 1990s, a man who led the football program to five Sac-Joaquin Section championships and stepped down all of two months ago after winning a Northern California Division I title in its inaugural year and the schools first CIF state crown.
But the Granite Bay community has opened its arms to James Skip Albano, who takes over as head coach for Ernie Cooper. Im just amazed at the amount of support from the parents, the players, the community, the school, he said. Of course, Albano didnt exactly have to ask how to get to the stadium when he returned to the campus. His 33-year coaching career includes six years with the Grizzlies, most recently as an offensive assistant / receivers / fly
backs coach in 2011, when Granite Bay won its first of back-to-back section banners. He also was the receivers/fly backs coach in 2000 and 2001, offensive coordinator in 2002, linebackers coach in 2008, and he served as co-head coach/offensive coordinator for the JV team in 2003. Granite Bay won the Division II section title in 2000. The night before his first practice as head coach, Albano said he couldnt sleep. He had a plan in place, coaches in place. But still I havent felt like this in

Practice on opening day, for everyone in the section, was held as dusk turned to dark. The weather was as calm as Albanos demeanor. Thats one noticeable difference in Albano, who quietly hums along, and Cooper, whose motor ran on highoctane fuel. The Grizzlies conditioned in groups with assistants barking instructions and Albano quietly involved, leading. Im a delegator, he said. Albanos early message: The Grizzlies wont think about repeating (state) or three-peating (section).

After a month-long hiatus, it should come as no surprise that the Placer Hillmen had a little rust to shake off when they returned to the practice field on Aug. 12 to prepare for their Aug. 30 home opener. You could tell that we havent done football for four weeks but luckily for us it was a lot of little mistakes that are fixable, said coach Joey Montoya, whose Hillmen went 11-1 in 2012 and won their first Pioneer Valley League title after a 10-0 start. A few days under our belts and well be able to fix that up. Added senior running back Todd Valliere: Its always good to get out here. We did work on our own, like lifting and stuff, but its good to be back out here with the team. Placer, which kicks its season

off against Central Catholic in Auburn, has a roster of 40 players for the upcoming year. Junior Clark Pietromonaco and senior Logan Strange are still battling for the signal-calling position. Montoya once again said that he likely wont know who his starting quarterback is until the week of the first game. In the meantime, with
Pietromonaco and Strange sharing snaps under center, the Placer offense is working on execution, hitting opening receivers and blocking assignments. Defensively, the youthful Hillmen are taking reps with the
hopes that practice makes perfect. The biggest hurdle for this group is youth, Montoya said. Were going to have a lot of new faces out there this year. They are plenty capable but they dont have a lot of varsity experience. With our schedule being what it is, theyre going to have to grow up fast. The big push for this team is just to get better every week and regardless of what we do during the preseason, to be playing our best football during league. Placer has just two returning starters on defense Valliere at defensive back and senior linebacker Robbie Lopez. For defense, we need to pull our inner animals out and make other people fear us, said senior Cameron Scott, a bruising 6foot-1, 225-pound fullbackdefensive end.

In a year of transition in the Sierra Foothill League, one constant in this years football chase is to expect the Del Oro Golden Eagles to be right in the thick of things. With three SFL schools Granite Bay, Woodcreek and Nevada Union having new head coaches on the sideline, Casey Taylor is beginning his 12th season at the helm of the Golden Eagles. And despite playing one of

this season, said Taylor, who last year saw his Golden Eagles win six of their last seven games to finish 7-6 and advance to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals. You could see it in the kids preparation this summer. Theres a lot of anticipation. Del Oro, two seasons removed from reaching a CIF State Bowl Game, may have the experience this season to be ready to make another deep run into the postseason. Several key seniors on offense return in the form of senior quarterback Michael Moore, who also played safety last season while starting three games
at signal-caller, running back Dylan Kainrath, tight end Tyler Meteer and linemen Emileo and Elias Campos. TeVon Rhyne, a junior, and Greg Eason, a Highlands transfer, look to be threats on offense while Tanner Woods, Therin Heryford and Kyle Wells all have games under their belts on the defensive side of the ball. While the SFL race looks to be wide open, Del Oro figures to be nose to nose with Granite Bay and Rocklin in the favorites department. Our league is a league where you cant take a week off, said Taylor. It should be a battle from start to finish.

Rocklin eyes the Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs

Thunder returns top quarterback

Logan Webb, one of the best quarterbacks in the league, will be returning for the Thunder this year.
The Rocklin High School football program is one of the top three in arguably the SacJoaquin Sections best conference, the Sierra Foothill League. And they do it by winning the games they have to. Under the direction of head coach Greg Benzel, the Thunder has missed the playoffs only once since winning the section championship in 2009. Last year, Rocklin made the playoffs winning just five games, three in the SFL. In 2012, the boys in blue handily defeated Nevada Union, Woodcreek and Roseville, losing only to league powerhouses Del Oro and Granite Bay by a total of 10 points. The Grizzlies went on to win the state Division I championship last year. Although the Thunder was hit hard by graduation, they return one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Logan Webb. As a junior, Webb took over the position when senior quarterback Daniel Kniffin suffered a shoulder injury in the second game of the season. Webb went on to throw for more than 2,000 yards last year to rank No. 2 in the SFL. The

only other SFL team that didnt graduate its starting signalcaller was Roseville. However, Rocklin did graduate its top three receivers and is in need of a stronger running attack. Running back Ryan Patrick, 5-10, 190 pounds, returns. Although Patrick only had 44 carries in 2012, he averaged more than 4 yards per carry. The Thunder lost a dozen players from their offensive and defensive lines, but should more than fill those losses with players moving up from last seasons 9-0-1 junior varsity club. That JV squad should also provide some rushing and receiving power as well. All-SFL lineman Sam Woods is gone, but building a strong front wall is a Benzel specialty. Dont be surprised if Rocklins final regular season game against Del Oro Nov. 11 decides the league championship.

he sidelines are wider at Hanson Field on the Roseville High School campus this year. The tiger paw at midfield is new, too, part of the freshened turf surface, and the Tigers were breaking it in during conditioning drills on the first day of practice. They were a loud, energetic bunch, running hard to catch passes, kicking knees and feet high and working up a quick, constant sweat on a bearable afternoon with the sun beating down and rubber chips radiating heat from under the artificial surface. Its been just a good working mentality from June through the summer, Tigers head coach Larry Cunha said as he watched the drills. Roseville was 2-8 last season, but the atmosphere among 55 bodies at Hanson Field was more 8-2. That was the Tigers JV record last sea-
son, and theyre juniors now pushing the seniors (who were 9-1 at the JV level two years ago) for starting spots and playing time. Depth is good. Competition is good, Cunha said. We have a lot back from last year. The talent isnt bad either. Kolton Miller will stand out every time he steps on the field. The senior lineman grew another inch and gained a few more pounds in the offseason. Hes now 6 foot 8, 290 pounds, and has 12 (Division I) offers in his pocket, according to Cunha. Beyond being 6-8, 290, the scholarship offers have flowed in because of the fact he plays with good bend and flex in his knees, Cunha said. He has long reach. Hes quick and agile. But he has to go out and play now. Miller, Kyle Powers, who started all 10 games
last season as a sophomore, and Andrew ORoak return to the offensive line to help protect senior quarterback Kyle Downie and what Cunha described as an excellent backfield. Senior Matt Razzano rushed for 712 yards last season. Junior Bryce Crouch totaled 751 yards rushing and receiving and scored seven touchdowns, and Cunha said carries should increase for junior Jake Vaughn as the season progresses. Downie and senior Jonathan Lopez entered the 2012 season opener at Cosumnes Oaks still auditioning to be the starting quarterback. Downie earned the gig and passed for 269 yards and five touchdowns in Rosevilles 49-42 victory over Woodcreek in a wild season finale. Hell be behind center when Cosumnes Oaks comes to Roseville on Aug. 30. Hes earned it, Cunha said, noting Downie has a grasp of Rosevilles multiple spread offense that features four and sometimes five receivers. Its quite a bit to learn. He
knows it, and hes comfortable. The ending didnt turn out all bad for Lopez either. He moved out to receiver and had an eight-catch, 165-yard, two-touchdown comingout party in Rosevilles victory over Woodcreek. He had a little mini career that game, Cunha said. What might be Whitney High School football head coach Michael Gimenezs biggest problem this season is choosing a starting lineup from a stable overflowing with potential starters. Its the Wildcats final season in the Capital Athletic League and they will likely closeout their tenure with a league title and a strong run in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Playoffs. Eighteen players carried the ball last season, including returning running back Kwane Wilkinson, who has great speed. Romo also passed to 15 different receivers, who hauled in a total of 85 aerials. Look for Whitney to score prolifically and give up yardage grudgingly. Two big games to watch for the Quarry Bowl Sept. 13 against crosstown rival Rocklin and Antelope Nov. 8.

New coaches toughen T-wolves

Under new co-head coaches Jason and Kyle Stowers, Woodcreek High School football has one word on its mind: Toughness. The word is thrown around in every drill. Coaches preach it and bark it. Players talk about it. After more than a decade without a winning record, the program is ready to take on the new mantra. For us, it is summed up in one word. We want to develop a sense of toughness where our players become physical and are able to compete in the SFL, which is like the SEC week in and week out, Jason Stowers said. The brothers come from
winning traditions. Jason Stowers spent 11 seasons at Colfax as an assistant coach and, along with Kyle Stowers, the Falcons won three Sac-Joaquin Section championships. Jason Stowers spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Del Oro, which won two section titles. The two are intense and organized, which comes from years of tutelage under Casey Taylor at Del Oro and Tony Martello at Colfax. The players at Woodcreek have taken notice. I am super excited about our two new head coaches, senior running back Mitchell Layton said. They bring a lot more intensity and fire to this team, and it has really helped us become
tougher. Thats the key word, toughness, because we need to really become tough in this league. Its not just the league schedule Woodcreek needs to worry about. The Timberwolves open the season Aug. 30 at Folsom, generally regarded as one of the top programs in the state. Woodcreek also travels to Capital Athletic League champ Antelope on Sept. 20 and to Pioneer Valley League champ Placer on Oct. 4. After practice, Jason Stowers stood over his players and reminded them that some pundits have the Timberwolves slated to go 1-9. Then he asked, Do you feel like a 1-9 player? The response was a resounding, No.

Jimison ready to lead Vista del Lago offense

The Eagles scored 563 points in 14 games, an average of 46.9 points per game, and reached the Division IV section championship game before losing to Oakdale, 22-9. The team won 12 games, losing only to Oakdale and Oak Ridge, in their final and first game of the season, respectively. A big reason for the success of the offense came from the play of quarterback Matt Jimison, who earned the starting job early in the season and posted spectacular numbers for a sophomore,
throwing for 2,592 yards and 37 touchdowns, while completing 60 percent of his passes. I came in ready to compete and I knew my chance would come, Jimison said of last season. Once I got my opportunity, I ran with it. I was confident in my ability and just waited for my shot and never looked back. With his sophomore year behind him, Jimison is now ready for his junior year. Expectations are high, as the Eagles would like nothing more than to reach the Division IV title game again this year, except this year they want to win it. With a years experience under his belt, Jimison is
confident as ever, but hes also excited because he knows hes a better quarterback this year. The 62 junior added nearly 20 pounds to his frame and starts the season bigger and stronger at 200 pounds. I wanted to improve my footwork and my pocket moves, Jimison said. I worked with my quarterback coach, Will Hewlett, in the Bay Area every weekend. At times last year I was slow on picking up coverages and getting the ball out and I definitely think Ive improved in those areas. agrees with Jimison. Matt did a very good job managing our offense last year, said Struebing. We asked him to do a ton of things and he did a great job. Last year he tended to stare down some things and sometimes didnt know what to do with the ball, so in the offseason we really worked on him being clear with his keys and where to go with the ball. We want him to get rid of the ball quicker. Struebing said one of Jimisons strengths is in his preparation. Hes put a lot of time in watching film and with chalk talk, Struebing said. Hes done a good job over the summer identifying his keys, reading it and going through his progressions. I think hell be tremendously better this year. Jimison is not only excited for the season, but also excited with the talent surrounding him on offense. Ive got a great group to work with that make my job so much easier, Jimison said. Ive got a great line with some big guys up front like tackles Pat Roche and Cooper Valencia. Weve got good returning receivers in Brad Rittenhouse, Tyler Kaim and Jacob Jones and running back Josh Pfeffer is a great teammate who works hard. Jimison said he has no personal goals hes aiming for this season. His only goal is to lead his team to a state championship. We know we have to work twice as hard to get back to where we were

last year, Jimison said. Were a self-motivated group. I think execution will be the key. We have the talent and we have guys who want to work. We just have to get better every week. Struebing added, The only statistic that matters is wins and losses. I have big expectations for our offense. Weve got some returning players who are fluid with what were doing. I look for our offense to produce and move the football.
