Killer meat

Before you dig into another hamburger, consider this: Americans who ate the most red meat
boosted their overall risk of death by 30% during a 10-year period compared to those who ate
Chairman the least, according to a new study. And before you switch to cold cuts instead, keep in mind
that people who consumed the most processed meat raised their overall risk of death by at
Mr. Manharlal L. Mehta least 16%.
37 Howberry Road

Men who were big meat eaters had a 22% increased risk of death from cancer and a 27%

Processed meats weren’t much better. The median intake among the top quintile was 22.6

Treasurer You’d also be doing the environment a favor, wrote Barry M. Popkin, a global nutrition and
economics expert at the University of North Carolina, in an editorial that accompanies the
Avanti Jasani study. Meat production takes up far more resources than growing fruits, vegetables, grains and
treasurer@ncva.co.uk legumes, including two to five times as much water, he wrote. He also cited a recent United
Nations report that blamed livestock for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions –- making them
bigger polluters than all the cars and trucks on the planet.

Factory farms, by their very nature, are inhumane. The human has decided to create a business out of

Mevada Association UK Humans are supposed to be a superior species. We have the ability to think, rationalize, and

human has proven over and over that we can subsist on a plant based diet. Why then do we continue

Do you steer or accept whatever comes your way?

Have you noticed how "Green" is everywhere? Enter a grocery store, and there are "green" products next to traditional ones.
Billboards on the highways promoting “green" homes. How do you know which products truly embrace sustainability concepts
versus traditional products with a marketing makeover?

For those on the path of living a sustainable lifestyle, there’s power in leveraging purchases to support credible and sustainable
businesses. As a personal consultant, I offer a few suggestions to make the distinction.

⇒ Research before you buy. For larger more infrequent items, set aside time to research your options. Evaluate products
on the full lifecycle. How much energy was used in producing the product? What is the energy consumption of your
intended use? How it will be discarded later? Compare products with eco awareness in mind.

⇒ Look for eco-labels. An eco-label is a logo indicating a product or company that has met an environmentally preferable
standard.

⇒ Buy local and buy in bulk. Supporting local businesses eliminates the need for products to be transported far distances.

⇒ Buy organic. Purchasing merchandise certified with organic labeling is another way to bring eco awareness to your
lifestyle. Buying organic means less pesticides in our ground water and better health for your family.

⇒ Buy Fair Trade. Buying Fair Trade helps to end abuses such as child and slave labor.

⇒ Buy products from sustainable sources like bamboo. Purchase products not tested on animals, made from renewable
sources and packaged with recyclable and minimal packaging.

⇒ Electronic purchases: Consider buying "Pre-Owned" goods. Purchasing previously owned products is a great way to
implement the sustainability concept of recycling. Ebay and Craig’s list are two good sources. Also ask your electronics
store about recycling options for older models.

⇒ Get product information and updates via email and the internet instead of paper and direct mail.

⇒ Speak up! Manufacturers are listening! Use social media to connect with business to communicate your preferences and
experiences. Consumers are the biggest drivers of sustainability changes.

Access to information has put the consumer in the driver’s seat. Use that information to identify credible sustainable businesses
and support sustainable products through your purchasing power.

Set Yourself Free

Letting Go of Perfection
It is good to remember that one of our goals in life is to not be perfect. We often lose track of this aspiration. When we make
mistakes, we think that we are failing or not measuring up. But if life is about experimenting, experiencing, and learning, then to
be imperfect is a prerequisite. Life becomes much more interesting once we let go of our quest for perfection and aspire for
imperfection instead.
This doesn’t mean that we don’t strive to be our best. We simply accept that there is no such thing as perfection—especially in life.
All living things are in a ceaseless state of movement. Even as you read this, your hair is growing, your cells are dying and being
reborn, and your blood is moving through your veins. Your life changes more than it stays the same. Perfection may happen in a
moment, but it will not last because it is an impermanent state. Trying to hold on to perfection or forcing it to happen causes
frustration and unhappiness.
In spite of this, many of us are in the habit of trying to be perfect. One way to nudge ourselves out of this tendency is to look at our
lives and notice that no one is judging us to see whether or not we are perfect. Sometimes, perfectionism is a holdover from our
childhood—an ideal we inherited from a demanding parent. We are adults now, and we can choose to let go of the need to
perform for someone else’s approval. Similarly, we can choose to experience the universe as a loving place where we are free to
be imperfect. Once we realize this, we can begin to take ourselves less seriously and have more fun. Imperfection is inherent to
being human. By embracing your imperfections, you embrace yourself.

Etiquette in death

Frequency and visiting times to deceased's house/s for condolences should be to the minimum and by the family only.
"Prathna Sabha" should be open to all those who want to attend.
It can be officially announced at this meeting that the invites have been sent out to those requested to participate in the final
cremation ceremony.
Privacy will be appreciated.
AT THIS EVENT and IN THIS CASE, DO NOT ANNOUNCE ANYTHING LIKE VENUE, TIME, DAY ETC ABOUT THE FUNERAL.
Even announce that the absence of women will be appreciated.
Should the family decide not to send out invites, they may announce, taking into consideration the size of crematorium.
Attendance at home, on the day, should be only for the family. Meaning those related by blood so that the family members can
openly shed tears without fear or shame of the onlookers
Attendance at the crematorium should be by invitation only.
Very much in line with wedding invites, these invites should be sent out to identified/selected relatives, friends and family. These
invites should also include invite for CHAS ROTLA at the family home after the ceremony. NO RSVP- and those who cannot, may
acknowledge anyway and those who want to come, will turn up.
No ladies should be invited at the crematorium. They never attended crematorium in India and Africa. Why has this system
cropped up and flourished over years. I know the background, but do not wish to enlighten now. Not them to be solely blamed,
but that number of attendee reduces accommodation in the chapel.
Have you ever seen women standing outside the chapel of worship? Where as the late comers, be it senior citizens or anybody
has to fare the weather outside the chapel.
I classify family as the one related by blood and a relative or a friend is one by social tie.
It is for the deceased's family to identify these invitees.
Neither the host nor guests should condemn and/or criticise the attendance or absence of anybody at this sad event.
These are my observations at over almost thirty-six years of attending funerals.
Your participation will open up debate for those who have influence in enforcing some changes.

Lets us start now and let the time prove its value in years to come

Baburai T Shah
Puja – what’s it all about?
Have you ever asked someone why we are asked/told to perform the ritual of puja in this way? Could they explain it? If so, did
you understand it? Have a look at this and let me know if it helps.

Your editor – Heena Modi

You should do the following things to prepare for any type of Puja ceremony:
II. Bathe or shower prior to performing Puja
III. Wear clean (recently washed) clothing and do not eat anything or go to the bathroom after putting
on those clothes
IV. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief

The purpose of performing Snatra Puja is to perceive and praise the virtues and attributes of the supreme beings Jineshwar (24
Tirthankars), and thereby remembering to always conduct ones own daily life with the same supreme virtues and attributes.

Stages in Snatra Puja:

V. Remembering and respectfully worshipping the virtues, attributes and characteristics that allowed the
24 Tirthankars to attain salvation.
VI. Celebration of the birth and re-enactment of the Tirthankar’s first bathing ceremony.
VII. Astha Prakari Puja: Worship with eight symbolic entities.
VIII. Aarti and Mangal Divo.
IX. Shanti-Kalash Ceremonial Process.
X. Bhav Puja: Chaityavandan.

Nine Points of Chandan Puja on idol of Tirthankar (Nav Ang Puja):

1. Right toe, then left toe
2. Right knee, then left knee
3. Right center of forearm, then left center of forearm
4. Right shoulder, then left shoulder
5. Top of head (at center)
6. Center of forehead
7. Center of throat
8. Center of chest

Meaning of Ashta Prakari Puja:

Generally Jains use the following eight items to perform Astha Prakari Puja of a Tirthankar. Each item represents a specific
religious virtue. While conducting the puja, one is reminded of the importance of conducting his/her own daily life with the same
supreme virtues.

1. Jala Puja: (Water)

Water symbolizes the ocean. Every living being continuously travels through life’s ocean birth, death, and misery. This puja
reminds that one should live their life with honesty, truthfulness, love and compassion towards all living beings. This way one will
be able to cross life’s ocean and attain Moksha or liberation.

2. Chandan Puja: (Sandal wood)

Chandan symbolizes knowledge (Jnan). By performing this puja, one should strive for Right Knowledge. Jainism preaches that the
Path of Knowledge is the main path to attain liberation. Bhakti or Devotion helps in the early stages of one's effort for liberation.

3. Pushpa Puja: (Flower)

A flower symbolizes conduct. Our conduct should be like a flower, which provides fragrance and beauty to all living beings
without discrimination. We should live our life like a flower, with love and compassion towards all living beings.

4. Dhoop Puja: (Incense)

Dhoop symbolizes the ascetic life. While burning itself, incense provides fragrance to others. Similarly, true monks and nuns
spend their entire life selflessly for the benefit of all living beings. This puja reminds that one should strive for an ascetic lifestyle
that ultimately leads to liberation.

5. Deepak Puja: (Candle)

The flame of deepak represents Pure Consciousness or a soul without any bondage (liberated soul). In Jainism, such a soul is
called a Siddha or God. The ultimate goal of every living being is to become liberated from karma. By doing this puja one should
strive to follow the Five Great Vows: Non violence, Truthfulness, Non stealing, Chastity and Non possession. Ultimately, these
vows coupled with Right Faith and Knowledge will lead to liberation.

The Jain Community of Manchester Celebrate Mahaveer Jayanti with a Vegetarian and Animal Compassion Theme
The Jain community of Manchester organised a two day event on 18th and 19th April at their splendid community centre. Nitin
Mehta of the Indian Vegetarian Society was a keynote speaker on the 18th. Amongst the other speakers were Gaurakrishnadas
of Manchester Hare Krishna society, Mukesh Pancoli of the Brahma Kumari organisation and Marion Hussenbux of the Quaker
Concern for Animals.

Nitin spelled out the ecological and the health cost of a meat diet. Each one of us he said should practise Ahimsa in our lives and
encourage people to give up meat eating. Leather goods such as leather shoes, leather sofas or cars with leather seats should
also avoided he said. Honey should not be consumed by vegetarians as there is violence in its production and it is effectively
bee vomit!

Nitin also urged vegetarians to consider giving up dairy products due to the cruelty perpetrated on dairy cows. A Mahaveer
award was presented Leslie Tarleton who for the last 30 years has dedicate her life to animals kept at the two sanctuaries she
runs in Liverpool and Wales. The award was given away by Jayendrabhai Patel who is an active member of the Jain Samaj. On
the 19th around 300 people attended the celebrations of the birth of Lord Mahaveer.

In his talk Nitin urged Jains to revive the message of Ahimsa as preached by Lord Mahaveer. We have inherited a priceless
culture, we must protect it and nurture it well. Ahimsa and Vegetarianism are the keys to the spiritual revival of our heritage.
Children must be brought up in a way that they acquire a taste for traditional Indian vegetarian food. Nitin thanked the
organisers specially Sarojben Patel, Bela Mehta and Dipti Mehta for making the whole event possible.
The President of Manchester Jain Samaj, Piyush Mehta, presented Nitin with a memento for his tireless efforts in promoting
vegetarianism. Manchester Jain community is a very good example of how unity can bring success. The Vegetarian Society of UK
has it headquarters in Manchester and there were thousands of vegetarians in Manchester area as far back as the 1870's. The
Jain community of Manchester is keen to build new links with the Vegetarian Society of UK to promote Ahimsa.

Singer Morrissey wants nothing to do with meat!

Morrissey banned any food that "used to have a face" from his concert in New York this week.

The ardent vegetarian - whose second album with his former group The Smiths was titled 'Meat Is Murder' - demanded the
Webster Hall venue be a meat-free zone before, during and immediately after his performance on Wednesday night (25.03.09).

A source said: "There were no deli sandwiches, sushi, pepperoni pizza or anything else that used to have a face. Even the
cleaning staff were happy to do their part by bringing in veggie sandwiches for lunch."

This is not the first time Morrissey has forced his staunch vegetarian views on other people.

Morrissey's former employee recently revealed the 49-year-old singer bans his staff from eating meat.

Andrew Winters - who applied to be Morrissey's valet for a two-week tour of America - claimed the singer pre-orders
vegetarian meals for all his roadies and will fire crew members on the spot if they are caught eating meat.

Winter said: "The one overriding rule is the vegetarian one. No burgers from room service, no ham salads. I got the sense even
visibly acknowledging the existence of McDonald's would mean instant sacking.

"I asked what the view is on fish. Seafood is sea life, I was informed, so the same rule applies."

Sugar and preaching…..

During 1930’s, a young boy had become obsessed with eating sugar. His mother was very upset with this. But no matter how
much she scolded him and tried to break his habit, he continued to satisfy his sweet tooth. Totally frustrated, she decided to take
her son to see his idol - Mahatma Gandhi; perhaps her son would listen to him.

She walked miles, for hours under scorching sun to finally reach Gandhi’s ashram. There, she shared with Gandhi her
predicament. -

“Bapu, my son eats too much sugar. It is not good for his health. Would you please advise him to stop eating it?”

Gandhi listened to the woman carefully, thought for a while and replied,
“Please come back after two weeks. I will talk to your son.”

The woman looked perplexed and wondered why had he not asked the boy to stop eating sugar right away. She took the boy by
the hand and went home.

Two weeks later they revisited Gandhi. Gandhi looked directly at the boy and said,
“Boy, you should stop eating sugar. It is not good for your health.”

The boy nodded and promised he would not continue this habit any longer. The boy’s mother was puzzled. She turned to Gandhi
and asked,
“Bapu, Why didn’t you tell him that two weeks ago when I brought him here to see you?”

Gandhi smiled,
“Mother, two weeks ago I was eating too much sugar myself.”

Dear All,

In the last two days I have received information that there has been at least two telephone calls to residents in Harrow from a
male, claiming to be checking security. He claims that the resident 'has been selected for a security check' and could they come
round and look at the property. The caller in both cases knew where the resident lives.

The telephone number was withheld. On both occasions the individual recipients of the call did not believe the caller to be
genuine and declined the offer. One resident lives in Harrow on the Hill and the other in Headstone South.
Please be mindful of individual's calling yourselves in regards to the above, if you have any other questions or queries please

Air Fresheners: Good for Smells, Bad for Health
When a horrible odor starts to permeate throughout your home, the first thing that you want to do is to make it go away.
That’s when air fresheners come in handy. They battle unwanted smells in a single spray, but even though they can make your home
smell like a meadow of flowers or fresh vanilla, what you may not know is that they can be damaging to your health.

How Can Air Fresheners Damage Your Health?

According to Science Daily, The Daily Collegian and Time, air fresheners may not be the saviors of smell that we think they are.
A study conducted last year by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) tested 14 air freshener brands that were found on a
shelf in Walgreens.

Out of these, 12 of the fresheners contained substantial amounts of the chemical phthalates, which if taken in large amounts can
cause liver and testes damage, as well as birth defects.
And guess whose air freshener had the highest amount of phthalates? The Walgreens brand! This of course prompted them to
remove the products from their shelves immediately.
Another study conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) found that air fresheners contain a
volatile organic compound (VOC) called 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB).
Volatile organic compounds cause soil, groundwater and air pollution, and 1,4 dichlorobenzene was determined to be a carcinogen.
And carcinogens cause cancer.
Also, extended periods of exposure to this compound can damage your lungs, and can be especially dangerous for people who have
asthma.

What Are the Alternatives?

Well, you can always open a window. Letting air circulate throughout the room will always make an unpleasant smell go away.

Other things you can do:

Burn an organic candle
Use an organic air freshener in-a-can from a company like Sunshine Scents
Burn organic incense or oils from The Amma Shop or Gaia-Tree
It may be more convenient to grab a can of air freshener when something smells funny, but you should always keep in mind just how
much more harmful the fumes from the spray are than what is making your house stink.
It only takes a minute to light a candle or to burn oil, so go for organic and take care of your body.

Community spirit
Namaskar Mitra,
In 2000 -01 we decorated Navnat Bhavan in Harrow with the help of volunteers. The volunteers included EC members, trustees and
Vadils. But the highest numbers were from the Youth EC of the day.

This was a very fruitful exercise as we managed to decorate the Hall with very little outlay. Of course we looked after our volunteers
and fed them with Pizzas and chips or whatever they fancied. I have attached some pictures from that time. See below. Poor quality
as I did not have a high resolution camera in those days.

We now have a rather big property and it’s in need of regular maintenance. Our Main Hall and dining Hall are need of a fresh coat of
paint. We have two suitable platforms. Our field needs regular mowing. To this end we have now bought a ride on mower. We need
volunteers to mow the grass regularly. It took me 8 hours to mow the entire field. This can be broken up in several time slots so that
no one person has to do it for more than 2-3 hours every week and our fields will look in top shape. We can then mark out cricket
and football pitch. We also have tennis courts that could do with a through clean.

We also need to buy the petrol driven grass/brush streamer to take care of rather long grass growing along the fence. This looks
unsightly. Again we will need volunteers to do couple of hours a month.

I am convinced that we have experts within our community in construction engineering, electrical, dealing with local councils for
planning and building regulations net working and setting up Wi-Fi, Telecom and CCTV experts. We need to get them together and
plan the way forward for our huge property.

I would appreciate if you would let me know your willingness to contribute few hours a month.

We can resurrect the same community spirit again.

Regards and God Bless

Instructions re how to avoid getting bitten the natural way

Citronella
The most common way to avoid mosquito bites when outdoors is to use a citronella candle. Planting marigolds
in your garden near your patio can also discourage them from hanging around. You can likewise use citronella
oil on your skin as a repellent.

For children you can use Yarrow tea. You can mist this on them to repel mosquito bites. This is a safe and affective way to
protect children. Lemon Balm is an alternative to prevent bites for children as well.

Pure vanilla
Pure vanilla, believe it or not, actually repels mosquitoes. If you use imitation vanilla it won't work though.
Mosquitoes are not the only bugs that don't like vanilla, so it's good to keep around. You can put vanilla on your
pulse points to keep away the bugs.
Lavender Who would think that lavender, as wonderful as it smells, would be a natural insect repellent. You can use
the flower to rub on your skin or use the oil on your pulse points just as you would for perfume. This is proof that you
don't have to smell like a chemical to keep away the bugs.

Garlic This last suggestion might sound funny but by eating garlic, you will repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes will not go
near a field of garlic.
